The 1% Club: The 1% Club was one of the biggest head-scratchers of last summer. An incredibly rare collaboration between a streaming service and a network that aren't owned by the same country, The 1% Club was first picked up as a Prime Video series, and Fox was later added as a broadcasting partner a few months later. Ratings were perfectly fine on Fox, matching several of their summer staples that were easily renewed, so it seemed like it would be a no-brainer that it would be back on Fox if Amazon were to continue it, and maybe even if they weren't. Well, Amazon decided against ordering another season earlier this year, and Fox stepped in to take over fully. They took over not only as the primary broadcaster of the series, but also as producer of it, and, to fully cement it as a Fox series, they hired Joel McHale as the new host. Clearly, Fox was pleased with how this show did last season if they went through to trouble of taking over production. In the one episode it's aired this season, it did show some promise. It was the highest-rated series on Fox last week, tying Bob's Burgers, and it returned up a bit from the last few episodes of season one. It is down from the premiere of season one, when it aired at 9 PM, but not a concerning amount - just a few hundredths. Its 0.21 premiere is a very renewable number for Fox, where even managing respectable ratings is a huge achievement. This debut rating alone beats out every rating from season three of McHale's Crime Scene Kitchen, which aired in the fall. Its performance on Hulu is also encouraging, reaching the top five on there and remaining on the chart since its debut. Things could change, but The 1% Club looks to be well-positioned for a third season. It's a LIKELY RENEWAL out of the starting gate.
The Snake: On the other end of the spectrum, we've got The Snake. We don't have enough data yet for me to make a confident cancellation prediction here, but from what we know, it's off to a rough start. The new reality series drew just a 0.14 for its series premiere, retaining only 67% of The 1% Club on premiere night - a worse 9 PM drop-off than any other series on Fox this summer, and by a wide margin While The 1% Club marked a noticeable improvement from what The Cleaning Lady had been doing in its time slot, The Snake was a downgrade from how The Cleaning Lady and Alert rated at 9 PM the last two weeks. That's not a terribly easy feat, as those were two of the lowest-rated shows on all of TV, but The Snake managed to pull it off. Now, it is important to note that 0.14 isn't meaningfully lower than, say, the 0.17 The Quiz with Balls got last week, but the Quiz had much stronger retention (94% in the demo, and 113% in viewers). The Snake could probably still survive on these numbers, hence my hesitancy with being too negative about it, even after outright bombing out of the starting gate. We've seen Fox shows with worse ratings get renewed despite presumably being more expensive than a summer game show, and we've seen these summer shows grow a bit as the season goes on, so this show could look renewable in due time. It has charted on Hulu nearly every day since its premiere, though it's never risen higher than #10 on the chart, so it's probably not adding that many new viewers on there. Regardless, it's too early to write this show off entirely, but it's off to a poor start, and Fox's summer lineup is easily the most crowded of all the networks, so it wouldn't be surprising at all to see it canceled and replaced with one of the singing competitions they benched this summer, or something else hosted by Joel McHale, or a new show entirely. It LEANS CANCELLATION to start.
