Saturday TV Ratings 2/5/22: Winter Olympics Rise from Thursday Coverage, NBA Modest, Great Chocolate Showdown Drops (UPDATED)
Screen-Shot-2022-02-06-at-12-00-21-AM

Ratings Analysis: On a Saturday night without 'SNL', the '2022 Winter Olympics' (1.79) led NBC to another effortless victory. This rating was about two-tenths lower than Friday's opening ceremony (1.97) but proved to be a significant improvement on Thursday's lackluster broadcast (1.24). ABC's 'Knicks v. Lakers' NBA game (0.67) came nowhere near the level of the 'Olympics' but was the only other telecast to go higher than a 0.24 in the Adults 18-49 demographic. 'NBA Countdown' (0.24) remained meager in the 8PM slot but still bested Fox's feeble 'PBC Boxing' (0.19). After 'Boxing', Fox aired a repeat of 'The Cleaning Lady' (0.10) that was 50% below the one from the previous Saturday (0.20). Whether as a result of stronger competition or terrible lead-in support from encores of 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.16) and 'SWAT' (0.18), CBS's '48 Hours' (0.24, -0.09) fell by nearly a full tenth from its last installment. On the CW, episode two of 'Great Chocolate Showdown' (0.05, -0.04) dropped by four-hundredths from its week-ago debut. Repeats of 'World's Funniest Animals' (0.04/0.04) inched down from there.

Finals Update: '2022 Winter Olympics' (+0.3), 'NBA: Knicks v. Lakers' (+0.4), 'PBC Boxing' (+0.1), and the repeat of 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (+0.1) adjusted up. 'NBA Countdown' (-0.1) adjusted down.

Sunday TV Ratings 9/5/21: College Football Leads, Big Brother Draws Lowest Rating of the Season, Legends of Tomorrow Stable for Finale (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: ABC's 'Notre Dame v. FL ST' college football broadcast (1.5) was five-tenths below Saturday's game but still well above anything else on Sunday night. Before the game, a repeat of 'The Conners' (0.5) topped the 7pm hour but may adjust down after finals. '60 Minutes' (0.4) and 'Big Brother' (0.7) were each down a whopping three-tenths on a week-to-week basis. 'Big Brother' posted a new season low and led into a presentation of the 2003 film 'School of Rock' (0.2) that few tuned in to. On NBC, the '2020 Tokyo Paralympics' (0.2) was a tenth higher than Saturday but continued to make very little noise. A rerun of 'America's Got Talent' (0.2) occupied the 9-11pm stretch. Fox's 'PBC Boxing' broadcast (0.1) went even lower than the 'Paralympics' and barely tied 7pm encores of 'The Great North' (0.1) and 'Bob's Burgers' (0.1). On the CW, 'Legends of Tomorrow' (0.1) posted the same rating for its finale that it has garnered all-season long. Over in the 9pm hour, 'Wellington Paranormal' (0.0) once more flew under the radar.

Finals Update: College Football: Notre Dame v. FL St. (+0.4) and Big Brother (+0.1) adjusted up. The repeat of The Conners (-0.1) adjusted down.

Saturday TV Ratings 8/7/21: Olympics Hit Another Low, ABC Reality and 48 Hours Repeats Take Distant Second (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: On the eve of the closing ceremony, the 'Tokyo Olympics' (1.4) crumbled some more. This broadcast lost five-tenths from Friday's and was easily a new low for the event. ABC had reruns of 'AFV' (0.2), 'Shark Tank' (0.2), and 'The Good Doctor' (0.1). CBS had a slightly lower average with encores of 'Magnum PI' (0.1) and '48 Hours' (0.1/0.2). Fox was dead less with another rotten showing of 'PBC Boxing' (0.1).

Finals Update: 2020 Tokyo Olympics (+0.1) and the repeat of The Good Doctor (+0.1) adjusted up.

Saturday TV Ratings 7/31/21: Tokyo Olympics Hit Another Low, ABC Reality and 48 Hours Repeats Take Very Distant Second (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: Falling below a 2.0 rating for the first time, the 'Tokyo Olympics' (1.9) lost four-tenths from Friday and had its weakest performance yet. An upward adjustment in finals will surely take this broadcast back into the 2s, but this remains a discouraging low-point for the sports event. Outside of the 'Olympics', nothing else on broadcast managed higher than a 0.2 rating. ABC had repeats of 'AFV' (0.2), Shark Tank' (0.2), and 'The Good Doctor' (0.1). CBS had a meager rerun of 'Magnum PI' (0.1) and a pair of '48 Hours' encores (0.1/0.2). Fox had nothing to write home about with its telecast of 'PBC Boxing' (0.1).

Finals Update: 2020 Tokyo Olympics (+0.4) and the repeat of America's Funniest Home Videos (+0.1) adjusted up.

Sunday TV Ratings 6/27/21: ABC Game Shows Slide, Gymnastic Trials Dominate, Batwoman Steady for Finale (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: Despite boasting Tik-Tok starpower, ABC's 'Celebrity Family Feud' (0.5) lost two-tenths from last week's preliminary rating. The ripple effect continued as the night went on as both 'The Chase' (0.4) and 'To Tell the Truth' (0.3) dropped to new season lows. A repeat of 'AFV' at 7 (0.5) was only a tenth below the previous Sunday encore. Much of the decline likely had to do with the increased competition, with NBC's broadcast of the 'Olympic Gymnastics Trials' (1.2) outpacing all other offerings. The 'Track and Field Trials' in the 7pm hour (0.4) performed significantly worse. CBS got a strong result out of the 'PGA Tournament' (0.6) but '60 Minutes' (0.4) fell from there. That was followed by anemic repeats of 'The Equalizer' (0.2) and 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.2). Fox got a truly dreadful rating from its two-hour broadcast of 'PBC Boxing' (0.1). Reruns of 'Duncanville' (0.2) and 'HouseBroken' (0.1) occupied the 7pm hour. The CW was predictably steady with 'Legends of Tomorrow' (0.1) and the 'Batwoman' finale (0.1).

Finals Update: Celebrity Family Feud (+0.1), PBC Boxing (+0.1) and To Tell The Truth (+0.1) adjusted up. 60 Minutes (-0.2) and repeats of Duncanville (-0.1) and The Equalizer (-0.2) adjusted down.

Saturday TV Ratings 5/1/21: Dateline NBC, Inspiring America & SNL Vintage Lead NBC to Victory, 48 Hours Ties for Second (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: NBC got a relatively decent, by depressed Saturday standards, rating out of an 'Inspiring America' special (0.3). A repeat of 'Dateline' (0.4) built from there and 'SNL Vintage' (0.3) held its own at 10, resulting in the peacock network taking the lead. CBS had low-rated encores of 'NCIS: New Orleans' (0.2/0.2) and a solid '48 Hours' (0.3). ABC had 0.2s across the board with reruns of 'Shark Tank' and 'American Idol'. Fox settled for 0.1s as 'PBC Boxing' and a 'Masked Singer' repeat failed to deliver.

Finals Update: Inspiring America (+0.1) and the repeat of Shark Tank (+0.1) adjusted up.

Saturday TV Ratings 4/17/21: NBA Leads, 48 Hours Slips (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: It may have only posted a 0.4 rating but the 'Warriors v. Celtics' NBA game was strong enough to beat out all other telecasts. An 'NBA Countdown' special (0.3) topped the 8pm hour as well. CBS had 0.2s across the board with repeats of 'NCIS: Los Angeles', 'NCIS: New Orleans', and a lower-end '48 Hours'. NBC had encores of 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.2) and 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' (0.2). 'SNL Vintage' (0.3) grew from the repeats at 10. Fox was a tier below the others with a meager broadcast of 'PBC Boxing' (0.1).

Finals Update: The 'Warriors v. Celtics' NBA game (0.6, +0.2), '48 Hours' (0.3, +0.1), and 'PBC Boxing' (0.2, +0.1) adjusted up. 'NBA Countdown' (0.2, -0.1) adjusted down.

Saturday TV Ratings 2/27/21: Saturday Night Live Slips, NBA Has Weak Showing (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: The Nick Jonas-hosted edition of 'SNL' slid down to a 1.1 A18-49 rating, a full tenth below the week-ago episode (1.20). Before 'Saturday Night', NBC had a rather lackluster night as repeats of 'Young Rock' (0.19), 'Kenan' (0.17), and 'Weakest Link' (0.13) were in abysmal territory. 'SNL Vintage' (0.31) improved a notch at 10. ABC's 'Mavericks v. Nets' NBA game (0.44) was roughly two-tenths behind last week's 'Heat v. Lakers' game (0.59) while 'NBA Countdown' (0.25) fell by three hundredths. CBS had encores of 'FBI' (0.27), 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.23), and a weaker outing of '48 Hours' (0.28). Fox's broadcast of 'PBC Boxing' (0.21) turned out to be marginally stronger than the usual '9-1-1'/'Name That Tune' repeat duo.

Finals Update: The repeat of FBI (+0.1) and NBA: Mavericks v. Nets (+0.1) adjusted up. The repeats of Kenan (-0.1) and Weakest Link (+0.2) adjusted down.

Saturday TV Ratings 1/30/21: Saturday Night Live Returns Steady, NBA Game Weaker but Still Leads Primetime (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: ABC beat all other 8-10 programs with its broadcast of the 'Lakers v. Celtics' NBA game (0.5). The latter led out of a lower-rated 'NBA Countdown' special (0.3). NBC wasn't far behind with repeats of 'Ellen's Game of Games' (0.3), 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.4), and 'SNL Vintage' (0.4). The original episode of 'SNL' at 11:30 posted a 1.44 A18-49 rating, on-par with its winter finale (1.4). CBS had a rerun of 'NCIS: New Orleans' (0.2) and a sturdy pair of '48 Hours' (0.3/0.4), one an encore and one original. Fox got a middling number out of 'Boxing' (0.3).

Finals Update: NBA: Lakers v. Celtics (+0.3) and PBC Boxing (+0.1) adjusted up. The repeats of Ellen's Game of Games (-0.1), Law & Order: SVU (-0.2) adjusted down.

Saturday TV Ratings 12/26/20: SNL Vintage Leads Abysmal Night, NCIS: New Orleans Repeat Wins in Total Viewers (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: NBC's 'SNL Vintage' (0.4) topped a silent evening, the 2018 episode that aired featured host Jason Momoa and musical guest Mumford & Sons. The peacock network began their night with repeats of 'Ellen's Game of Games' (0.3) and 'The Wall' (0.3). ABC had passable encores of 'To Tell the Truth' (0.3), 'Shark Tank' (0.3), and 'The Rookie' (0.2). CBS was close behind with repeats of 'NCIS: New Orleans' (0.3) and '48 Hours' (0.2/0.2). Fox had the only original broadcast of the night in the form of low-rated 'Boxing' (0.2).

Finals Update: All shows held their preliminary rating.

Saturday TV Ratings 11/7/20: Biden and Harris Victory Speeches Rate Solidly, Clemson/Notre Dame Game Huge, SNL Massive (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: NBC's 'Clemson v. Notre Dame' college football game (2.1) absolutely demolished ABC's game (0.4) head-on in the 8pm hour. Right in the middle was CBS's coverage of President-elect Joe Biden's victory speech (0.7). CBS closed things out with a much lower-rated '48 Hours' (0.3). Fox went with a weak 'PBC Boxing' (0.3). Finally, a Dave Chapelle-hosted 'Saturday Night Live' posted a colossal 2.6 A18-49 rating, double what the comedy series garnered last week (1.3).

Finals Update: NBC's football game (2.5, +0.4), CBS's Biden speech (1.0, +0.3), and '48 Hours' (0.4, +0.1) adjusted up.

Sunday TV Ratings 9/6/20: NBA Dominates with Lakers and Rockets Game, Big Brother Down, NHL Game Modest (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: After last week's monstrous 'Black Panther' showing, ABC continued its Sunday night dominance with a broadcast of the 'Lakers v. Rockets' NBA game (1.3). It was markedly above Tuesday's 'Jazz v. Nuggets' game (1.0) and pretty easily bested the competition. It led out of a surprisingly sturdy 'AFV' repeat (1.1) and an NBA countdown special (0.9). The 'AFV' repeat will likely adjust down after finals.

CBS came the closest to competing with the alphabet network but still couldn't hold a candle to their numbers. A fading 'Big Brother' (0.8) shed a tenth from its last episode but built a good bit from its '60 Minutes' repeat lead-in (0.4). After 'Brother', 'Love Island' (0.4) managed to gain a tenth from its Friday original. A poorly-rated 'NCIS: New Orleans' repeat (0.2) closed things out.

The 'NHL' game on NBC (0.4) found itself in very meager territory (though looked like a godsend when compared to Fox's numbers) and led out of a low-rated 'Cannonball' (0.3). Fox decided to swap out cartoon repeats for boxing and somehow managed to fall further than they already were. 'PBC Boxing' (0.1) completely bombed at 8pm, as did the 'NFL Sunday' preview (0.1) that came before it. The CW matched their efforts with a steady 'Fridge Wars' (0.1) and a 'Supernatural' repeat (0.1).

Finals Update: NBA: Rockets v. Lakers (+0.7), Fox NFL Sunday 2020 Preview (+0.1), PBC Boxing (+0.1) and NHL: Stars v. Golden Knights (+0.1) adjusted up.

America's Funniest Home Videos (-0.3) and NBA Countdown (-0.2) adjusted down.

Saturday TV Ratings 8/29/20: NASCAR Easily Leads, Love Island: More to Love Abysmal (UPDATED)

There was little competition on Saturday night as NASCAR's Coke Zero Sugar 400 easily won the night with a strong 0.6 for NBC, beating its closest competition by two tenths. This rating for a Saturday race isn't too far off what original episodes of America's Got Talent, NBC's top summer show, are doing, so this is a very impressive result to say the least.

In second, being the only other network to have any meaningful quantity of people tuning in, was ABC. A Funniest Home Videos repeat at 8 was at 0.4, taking second for the night in both the 18-49 demo and in viewers. Ratings dropped as the night went along, with a Shark Tank repeat ast 9 drawing a 0.3 and a Good Doctor encore at 10 at 0.2, continuing to be the clear weak spot in this lineup.

Fox had two hours of PBC Boxing with 0.1/0.2 halves and an abysmal viewership totals. On the plus side, it's not really much worse than how the network's been doing for some of its repeats lately (such as MasterChef and Prodigal Son).

CBS had quite a night. Love Island recap show More To Love got off to a horrifying start with a 0.1 and well under a million viewers, potentially being CBS's lowest-rated airing ever. Love Island itself is an awful performer, so it's puzzling that they'd even order a recap show, but they did and at least it delivered some interesting ratings. At 10, the 48 Hours repeat dropped thanks to that abysmal lead-in, drawing a 0.2 with a notable drop in viewers, as well.

Finals Update: The repeat of 48 Hours (+0.1) adjusted up.

Saturday TV Ratings 8/22/20: Lakers and Trail Blazers NBA Playoff Game Dominates, NHL Modest (UPDATED)

Despite Saturday ratings typically being lower, ABC managed to have one of the top programs of the week with last night's NBA Playoff game featuring the Lakers and Trail Blazers. Though the game was a notch below primetime games that aired on TNT and ESPN this week, it was easily last night's top show with a 0.9. A 0.5 in the first half-hour weighed it down, as it grew to a 1.1 by the end of the night.

The other networks were left completely in the dust.

NBC had an NHL game featuring the Stars and Avalanche, which drew little interest with a 0.3. This is steady with last week's result for a Golden Knights and Blackhawks game.

CBS had a repeat of Magnum PI at 0.2, with two 48 Hours encores at 0.3.

Fox took last place for the night with PBC Boxing, drawing weak 0.1/0.2 hourly averages.

Finals Update: NBA: Lakers v. Trail Blazers (+0.4) adjusted up. NBA Countdown (-0.4) adjusted down
