Fresh Off the Boat Season 3 Finale Review

The second part of the Fresh Off the Boat season finale sees the Huangs get adjusted to their new situation.

S3E23 "This Isn't Us"

The Huangs move into their new house, but Jessica insists that they limit their expenses in this house as much as possible, because they can barely afford it. For once, Jessica's way of doing things feels necessary. She's not saying that they do this to save money, she's saying that they need to do it. She's being the realistic one this week. However, it turns out I was wrong when Jessica reveals that they are not house poor, which doesn't seem realistic to me. Meanwhile, Emery is concerned that the blazers for Evan's school may have been made by child laborers.

Jessica explains that she isn't comfortable being comfortable, which is an interesting thing for her to share. It makes total sense with her character. Due to Emery and Evan confronting the school about the blazers, Evan's admission is revoked. They reveal this to Jessica, who then decides that they should move back into their old house. It is hilarious when Jessica is able to return the house. On the car ride back, Eddie is sad about how his friends aren't his friends anymore, and Grandma Huang has a hilarious response to this. When they get back, they discover another family has rented their house, and they are now homeless, Jessica's biggest fear.

Not every part of this episode was great, but the last few minutes certainly were. Also, it was all very true to character.

Score: 8.5/10

Fresh Off the Boat S3E22 Review

The first part of Fresh Off the Boat's season finale has Evan trying to get into a private school.

S3E22 "This Is Us"

Evan wants to go to private school, but Jessica doesn't want to spend that amount of money. Jessica shows Evan her plans for the kids' lives, which is a pretty funny thing for her to have done, and Evan makes her realize how he is ahead of schedule on his path to being doctor-president.

Jessica finally decides to hear out a person from the private school, and her reactions to what he says are great. It's very funny when Jessica tries to negotiate the price of the school. Evan doesn't actually end up getting in to the school, and it's hilarious when they were sent bumper stickers about almost getting into the school.

Jessica is convinced that someone got something wrong, and discovers Evan may have gotten rejected because the family rents. Things change, however, when Jessica and Louis decide to buy a nice house, which will get Evan into the private school.

Also this week, Eddie and his friends edit a video of their middle school graduation. They put funny comments on it, which entertains them. However, the video ends up out of their hands, which could potentially bring embarrassment, so they attempt to get it back. This is a moderately amusing story.

Jessica was hilarious this week, and Evan was great as well. The rest of the episode wasn't as strong, but luckily those two got the most screen time, and they made use of it.

Score: 8.5/10

Fresh Off the Boat S3E21 Review

This week, Evan and Jessica debate, while Emery and Eddie work on a comic book.

S3E21 "Pie vs. Cake"

The episode begins with a funny scene where Jessica has a victory, as she makes a return. Evan discovers debate club at his school, which Jessica supports. However, Evan ends up winning a debate against Jessica about which desert they should get. Later, Jessica tries to return something, and she is unable to, but Evan is able to get the person to make the return. Jessica is upset by this, believing that Evan doesn't need her anymore. However, when Evan isn't allowed onto the debate team, Jessica goes down to the school and gives a great argument as to why he should be allowed.

Emery is working on a comic book for a contest, and when Eddie finds out how much money can be made, he decides that he wants to work with Emery. They have completely different ideas for the comic book, but after Eddie discovers how hard it is to come up with something on his own, they work together again, and they discover that Jessica and Evan should be the subject of their comic book.

Evan and Jessica had a good amount of funny moments, and while Eddie and Emery weren't as funny, the scene where Eddie showed his character to Grandma Huang was a good one.

Score: 8/10

Fresh Off the Boat S3E20 Review

This episode has to do with Tiger Woods, and how one of his parents is Asian.

S3E20 "The Masters"

The Huang kids watch as Tiger Woods becomes the youngest person to win at the Masters, and their reasoning as to why they can't let Jessica know that Tiger Woods is half-Asian is great. Jessica discovers, and it leads to a discussion about parenting styles between her and Louis, as she compares them to Tiger Woods' parents. This set-up is great, and the scenes where Jessica tries to cover up for what she said are hilarious. Louis decides that he and Jessica can settle whose parenting styles are better by seeing who can get one of their kids to be a better golfer.

It's very funny when Jessica gets rid of a golf instructor after he shortens her name, and then returns to that instructor after the other one disagrees with her. Additionally, the scene where Jessica decides to swap kids with Louis is great, especially when Evan wishes plagues upon her. Jessica believes that her parenting style is worse than Louis's when whoever he is working with does better, but after a conversation with a woman who she believes is Tiger Woods's mother, she realizes the benefits of her style. Also, the reveal that this woman was not actually Tiger Woods's mother was very entertaining.

In the episode's B-story, Emery tries to let everyone know that Tiger Woods's mother is Asian, but no one believes him. There are some very entertaining moments here, and Emery's speech about how he wants Asian-Americans to be able to feel pride in Tiger Woods, but doesn't want to take away from his African-American side is touching. The girl who does the announcements is funny with her intensity, and it's pretty funny when at the end Emery makes the announcement, but no one is listening because of a fight over having the same backpack.

This was one of Fresh Off the Boat's strongest episodes this season, with two stories that were very funny but also had some sweet moments.

Score: 10/10

Fresh Off the Boat S3E19 Review

This week, with her new wheels Grandma Huang also has a new boyfriend.

S3E19 "Driving Miss Jenny"

Louis discovers that Grandma Huang is going out on her own in her new wheelchair. He doesn't like this, so he writes up a fake business letter saying that the insurance won't cover the new chair anymore. This leads to a good joke about Microsoft Word's Clippy. His letter doesn't work, and it's funny when Louis ends up acting like a dad to Grandma Huang.

Jessica has used the time that she has gained with Grandma Huang going out on her own by cleaning. Emery, however, is upset about many of the things that Jessica wants to get rid of. There is also a hilarious joke when Jessica critiques Emery's view of the future. Jessica helps Emery go through his things, and she comes up with the solution of taking pictures of all of the things.

Eddie discovers Evan's house-sitting business, and he says that he wants in. However, Eddie doesn't like how much time it takes doing everything Evan's way. Eddie gets Dave to do the work for him, so Evan confronts Eddie about this, who points out that it's good business, which leads to Evan firing Eddie and hiring Dave.

The main story with Louis and Grandma Huang was great, but the other stories weren't as strong. The Jessica and Emery one had some good jokes, but the Eddie and Evan one was weak.

Score: 7.5/10
