Put Me In Season 2 Episode 16: Division Championship

PREVIOUSLY ON PUT ME IN

CARTER
So you’re sure you want me to be ace?

LEWIS
I do, and so does Jamie.

CARTER
Really?!

LEWIS
That’s right. She sees you as the future of this team.

CARTER
I don’t know what to say!

LEWIS
Nothing. Just go back to the clubhouse and prepare yourself.

CARTER leaves the dugout, excited that he is officially the team’s ace pitcher again. He watches the Charleston Capitols win the series from the clubhouse.

It is the bottom of the ninth inning. CARTER has finished his outing, giving up two hits and zero runs. LEWIS approaches him in the dugout.

LEWIS
Don’t you think you should get moving?

CARTER
Eh, I figured I’d watch the game from here.

LEWIS
You have your interview though.

CARTER
What interview?

LEWIS
I must have forgotten to told you. Jamie wants to interview you.

CARTER
When?

LEWIS
Right after you finish pitching.

CARTER
That was over an hour ago.

LEWIS
Go there now then.

CARTER leaves the dugout and enters JAMIE’s office.

JAMIE
Welcome, Carter.

CARTER
Sorry I’m late, I wasn’t told I had an interview until now.

JAMIE
Somehow, I believe you.

CARTER
Now what’s this meeting about?

JAMIE
You being our ace.

CARTER
Yeah, thank you so much for seeing potential in me, this really means a lot, and—

JAMIE
We fired David.

CARTER
Huh?

JAMIE
We fired David. He was being a pain.

CARTER
How did he take that?

JAMIE
Not too well. But he’ll get over it.

CARTER
I hope so.

JAMIE
I thought you hated him?

CARTER
Envious is the right word.

JAMIE
One more thing.

CARTER
What is it?

JAMIE
You’re also fired.

CARTER
What?!!

JAMIE
Okay, now I know that if I ever fire you, that’ll be your reaction.

CARTER
Huh?

JAMIE
I was just testing out reactions on you.

CARTER
Oh. So I’m not fired?

JAMIE
Nope.

CARTER
And I guess David isn’t either, is he?

JAMIE
He’s fired.

CARTER
I can’t even tell if you’re serious.

JAMIE
I’m being very serious.

CARTER
Wow. Well, I wish him luck.

JAMIE
Don’t tell me that, tell him.

CARTER
Oh, I don’t even know how to get in contact with him.

JAMIE
He’s right outside my office.

CARTER
Oh.

CARTER walks out of the office and sees DAVID.

CARTER
I see they let you go.

DAVID
Let me go? We came to a mutual agreement about where my potential is best suited.

CARTER
I see. Hey, good luck.

DAVID
With what? I’m giving up this baseball nonsense.

CARTER
Don’t get too down on yourself. I’m sure there are places looking to take you.

DAVID
I’ve already been contacted by seven teams. They all want me to be ace. How many have asked you that question, again?

CARTER
Well I mean I haven’t been on the market.

DAVID
Exactly. I win, seven to nothing. Sucker.

DAVID walks away. CARTER looks confused, then walks back to the dugout to find the Charleston Capitols won the game. They have won the division series, and will be moving on to the conference championship.
