Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, and The Simpsons Renewed for Four Seasons Each by Fox, American Dad! Officially Moving Back to Fox

Fox's veteran animated sitcoms are coming back in a big way. The network has announced that legendary cartoons The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob's Burgers have all been granted four-season renewals at the network. All three shows were coming off two-season renewals that were announced in January 2023. An April pickup is a later renewal confirmation than these shows would typically receive, but the size of the order is a likely culprit for the delayed announcement. In addition to these renewals, Fox has also officially confirmed that American Dad! will return to the network where it began. The series had been a TBS staple for the last decade before that network moved away from scripted programming amid corporate restructuring. American Dad's pickup is also for four seasons. All four animated staples will have fifteen-episode seasons going forward. That's a decline from the norm, but not far off from recent seasons, which have seen Bob's Burgers and The Simpsons benched at midseason and Family Guy left off the fall schedule, all resulting in shorter seasons. All three veteran renewals are correct predictions for The TV Ratings Guide.

Below are the March 9th renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2024-25 television season. The numbers listed in the table are the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The "Y2Y (year-to-year) Change" column compares a show's current average to its average from the previous season. 

Bob's Burgers: For the second year in a row, Bob's Burgers has missed out on having a regular time slot during the back half of the traditional television season. The series that was once the centerpiece of Fox's animation block is currently being completely ignored by the network. Last year, Bob's at least got an original or two tossed into the Sunday mix after it had to hand over its slot to The Great North. This year, there are no upcoming listings for the series, and Fox even chose to remove a slate of reruns that were set to air in January 2025 (Futon Critic). So, is Bob's in any danger? For now, that is probably not the case. The series just recently dipped into its 14th production cycle, with just three from that batch having aired in fall 2024. Since the typical Bob's cycle has 22 episodes, there are at least 19 installments waiting to hit the small screen. Because of this, Bob's Burgers remains a Certain Renewal. Despite Fox's mistreatment of the series, it is all but guaranteed to return in the 2025-26 television season. Its future after that, however, is uncertain.  

Krapopolis: In other animation news, it was recently confirmed that Krapopolis has more than 13 episodes in its third production cycle (Futon Critic). Since production cycle 1 had 13 episodes and cycle 2 had 10, it seemed reasonable to assume that the third cycle had a similar total. However, there are currently 15 confirmed episodes in its third batch. Given that there are only about two months left in the regular season, it feels safe to keep Krap in the already-Renewed section. The third cycle could have anywhere between 16-22 episodes, and a fourth batch is waiting in the wings. All this is to say that Krapopolis will be back in some shape or form in the 2025-26 season.

Doc: Toward the end of February, Fox renewed freshman drama Doc for a second season. This serves as a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide, as the series had been in the "Likely Renewal" column since its premiere. Doc started out as a struggling performer, but it slowly built itself up over the weeks. Its recent string of 0.27s makes it one of Fox's strongest scripted offerings, if not the strongest one currently on the air. Its linear growth and strong streaming performance made it an obvious candidate for renewal, and Fox clearly saw the potential in it.

FOX Renew/Cancel Week 22: Hit The Snooze Button on "Alert" + FOX March Madness Voting Begins

Below are the Week 22 renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2023-24 television season. The numbers listed in the table mark the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The "Y2Y (year-to-year) Change" column denotes how much the series has risen or fallen when compared to its average from the previous season. Because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, there is a limited amount of scripted programming this spring. As a result, reality television will continue to be included in this column. Now that scripted programming is returning, scripted and reality will be split into two separate charts.

Alert: Since its March 5th premiere, Alert: Missing Persons Unit has only gotten weaker and weaker in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The 0.18 rating it posted on premiere night was already a new series low, but it then fell to a 0.17 and most recently to a 0.14. This series is one of Fox's poorest performers, and it is unlikely that things will improve from here. Alert was hardly worth renewing to begin with, but it's hard to imagine that it slips through the cracks again with numbers like these. This sophomore drama remains Likely to be Canceled. 

Family Guy: After a semi-decent start to its Wednesday night stint, Family Guy crumbled in the same way that Alert did (0.20 > 0.16 > 0.14). On a historically-adjusted basis, a 0.14 may very well be this show's poorest performance ever, even when compared to how it was doing before its first cancellation. In terms of raw ratings, it is a clear series low. Of course, ratings hardly matter for a juggernaut like Family Guy, but the time slot downgrade and poor Nielsen numbers signal that Fox is getting ready to get rid of the Griffin family.

Animal Control: Though Animal Control held steady at a 0.21 rating for two weeks, things took a turn for the worse when episode three fell to a meager 0.17. The Joel McHale sitcom retained less than 50% of The Masked Singer (0.38) and set a new series low here. This one is already Renewed for a third season and allegedly performs quite well on digital platforms, but the live ratings are starting to shrink to the point where it's looking like a real eyesore. 

Bob's Burgers: After a two-month hiatus, Fox randomly brought Bob's Burgers back on March 10th to air behind a Simpsons rerun on Oscars night. Since this was also an out-of-time slot airing, it almost seemed like Fox was doing all they could to tank the series. And yet, miraculously, Bob's posted a 0.29 rating and built on its repeat lead-in (0.17) by more than a full tenth! Considering that this will likely be the only 0.3 rating to come out of a Fox cartoon this spring, it is clear that Bob's remains incredibly valuable from a live ratings standpoint. Bob's will once more be placed on a two-month hiatus, with its finale currently set for May 19 at 9:30 p.m. Bob's could have just aired these two episodes in January and properly wrapped up its shortened season, but Fox works in mysterious ways and enjoys erratically tossing episodes into random slots. 

The Great North: On the night when Bob's Burgers occupied the 8:30 p.m. slot with its solid 0.29 rating, The Great North shot up to a 0.21 rating. Once Krapopolis returned to 8:30, Great North crashed back down to a 0.13. It is clear that this series is not anchor material, but it would probably do fine business if it was at the bottom of an hour led by Bob's.

The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers Receive Two-Season Renewals

Three of Fox's longest-running series will all be back on the schedule next season, and the season after that, as the network has ordered two additional seasons each of the Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob's Burgers. All three have been staples of the Fox schedule ever since their debuts (save for a period in which Family Guy was canceled in the early 2000s) and have performed well for them, despite hefty ratings declines in recent seasons. Even with those declines, the shows have remained particularly strong on streaming platforms, with The Simpsons being a keystone of Disney+. All three are correct predictions for The TV Ratings Guide.
