OFF SCRIPT
Season 1, Episode 8: "Focus Group"
INT. BLACKRIDGE STUDIOS - SCREENING ROOM - MORNING
A depressing little theater.
Fold-out chairs. Bottled water. Cheap cookies nobody trusts.
A sign outside reads:
TEST AUDIENCE TODAY
Harry stares at it like a threat.
Maya approaches holding clipboard.
MAYA: You’ve never done
one of these before, right?
HARRY: No.
Maya nods sympathetically.
MAYA: Okay.
Beat.
MAYA: Don’t make eye
contact with them after.
Harry laughs slightly.
HARRY: You’re kidding.
Maya just looks at him.
TITLE CARD: OFF
SCRIPT
INT. TALKING HEAD ROOM – MORNING -ZOEY
ZOEY: Focus groups are
when studios invite random people to judge unfinished movies. Which sounds fake
until you realize democracy also exists.
INT. SCREENING ROOM - LATER
Harry, Zoey, Kara and Maxwell watch through back glass as
audience members enter.
The audience is deeply random:
- elderly
couple,
- college
students,
- one
guy who looks aggressively confused already,
- teenage
horror fans,
- suburban
moms.
Harry watches nervously.
HARRY: Why does that guy
look angry before it started?
Kara checks paperwork.
KARA: He wrote “dislikes
suspense” on his form.
Harry turns slowly.
HARRY: Then why is he
here?
KARA: Statistical balance.
Zoey quietly mutters:
ZOEY: I’m gonna die in
this room.
INT. SCREENING ROOM - LATER
The unfinished teaser plays.
Missing effects. Rough sound mix. Placeholder music.
Audience reactions are impossible to read.
Harry studies them obsessively.
One woman writes notes constantly.
A teenage fan nods approvingly at one shot.
Aaron’s big scene gets almost no reaction.
Harry notices immediately.
Zoey notices Harry noticing.
Then:
placeholder CGI accidentally appears unfinished.
The killer’s face glitches weirdly for half a second.
A guy in audience bursts out laughing.
Harry closes his eyes.
INT. TALKING HEAD ROOM - HARRY
HARRY: You spend months
making something and then one unfinished visual effect makes a stranger laugh
like you insulted his family personally.
INT. SCREENING ROOM - AFTER
Lights come on.
The moderator stands.
Too cheerful.
MODERATOR: Okay everybody!
Let’s discuss our emotional journey.
Zoey physically recoils.
Audience feedback begins.
AUDIENCE WOMAN: I thought
it was too dark.
COLLEGE GUY: I liked the
dark.
OLDER MAN: Couldn’t see
anything.
TEENAGE FAN: That’s the
point.
OLDER MAN: Then bad point.
Harry watches in horror.
Another audience member raises hand.
AUDIENCE MAN: The mask
looked wet.
Silence.
HARRY: Wet?
AUDIENCE MAN: Yeah.
Beat.
AUDIENCE MAN: Disrespectfully
wet.
Zoey stares into middle distance.
INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE SCREENING ROOM - LATER
Harry exits fast.
Zoey follows.
HARRY: “Disrespectfully
wet” isn’t feedback.
ZOEY: No, weirdly it is.
Harry paces.
HARRY: Why do we ask
random people to do this?
ZOEY: Because executives
are scared of critics and critics are scared of Twitter.
Beat.
HARRY: The teaser’s not
even finished.
ZOEY: Doesn’t matter
anymore.
That line hangs there.
INT. PRODUCTION OFFICE - AFTERNOON
Kara presents audience analytics on screen.
Everybody exhausted.
KARA: Overall reactions
are… mixed.
Harry nods.
HARRY: Yeah, I got that
from the wet mask guy.
Kara clicks slides.
KARA: Positive notes: atmosphere,
practical sets, tension.
Beat.
KARA: Negative notes: pacing,
confusion, “too much staring.”
Harry blinks.
HARRY: It’s horror.
MAXWELL: Modern audiences
don’t love silence.
Zoey immediately:
ZOEY: Then why are they
watching horror movies?
Maxwell stays calm.
MAXWELL: Because they like
surviving them.
Beat.
Honestly not a terrible point.
Harry notices that too. Annoyingly.
INT. CAST HOLDING - LATER
Aaron spiraling slightly.
He’s reading audience cards.
AARON: “Lead actor feels
emotionally unavailable.”
Beat.
AARON: What does that even
mean?
Lucy peeks at card.
LUCY: Honestly? Kind of
accurate.
Aaron looks wounded.
AARON: I’m extremely
available emotionally.
Nick reads another card.
NICK: Somebody wrote “good
bone structure but concerning energy.”
Aaron grabs the card.
AARON: Okay that’s just
rude.
INT. TALKING HEAD ROOM - AARON
AARON: I’m trying very
hard not to take anonymous criticism personally.
Long beat.
AARON: I failed
immediately.
INT. SOUNDSTAGE - AFTERNOON
Harry tries prepping next scene but can’t focus.
Still thinking about feedback.
Tegan notices.
TEGAN: You’re doing the
thing again.
HARRY: What thing?
TEGAN: Your face gets
quieter when you’re stressed.
Beat.
HARRY: That doesn’t make
sense.
TEGAN: Yeah but it’s true.
Harry sighs.
HARRY: I just don’t know
how much you’re supposed to listen to this stuff.
Tegan thinks about it.
Then:
TEGAN: If we listened to
every audience note, my yogurt commercial would’ve ended with a car chase.
Harry laughs despite himself.
INT. WRITERS’ ROOM - EVENING
Zoey rewrites pages angrily.
Harry enters.
Quiet.
HARRY: You changing stuff
because of the focus group?
ZOEY: Trying not to.
Beat.
ZOEY: Are you?
Harry hesitates too long.
Zoey notices.
Not angry.
Just disappointed again.
ZOEY: Harry.
HARRY: I’m not trying to
ruin it.
ZOEY: I know.
Beat.
ZOEY: That’s the scary
part.
That lands hard.
INT. MAIN SET - NIGHT
Harry sets up a simple scene.
Minimal dialogue.
Atmosphere-heavy.
Exactly the kind of scene the focus group complained about.
Maxwell watches nearby.
Quiet pressure.
Harry notices.
For a second, he almost changes the setup.
Then stops himself.
Beat.
Then simply:
HARRY: Let’s shoot it how
we planned.
Zoey hears that.
Tiny moment.
The scene begins.
Tegan slowly walks through hallway.
Silence.
Breathing.
Creaking wood.
Simple.
And honestly?
It’s really good.
Harry watches monitor.
Crew completely focused.
Nobody talking.
Even Maxwell watches carefully now.
The scene ends.
Silence.
Then quietly:
MAXWELL: Okay.
Harry turns slightly.
MAXWELL: That worked.
Beat.
MAXWELL: Still trim three
seconds.
Harry almost smiles despite himself.
INT. PARKING LOT - NIGHT
Harry and Zoey walking out again.
Tired.
Harry holding focus-group packet.
Zoey notices.
ZOEY: You still carrying
those around?
Harry flips through pages.
HARRY: One person wrote
“movie smells expensive.”
Beat.
ZOEY: That’s… honestly
kinda good.
Harry laughs.
Then finds another note.
Reads silently.
Stops.
Zoey notices.
ZOEY: What?
Harry hands her card.
She reads:
“Felt like the people making it actually cared.”
Silence.
Zoey looks at Harry.
Small moment.
Then quietly:
ZOEY: Okay.
Beat.
ZOEY: Keep that one.
