MANNY, HARRY, DEVIN, ACE, LORENZO, ROBERT, CHARLES, and FELIX are all in the bullpen at an Indianapolis Primitives’ playoff game.
FELIX
So I heard the Capitols made the Championship Series again.
MANNY
Did they now? Didn’t know.
FELIX
It happened yesterday.
MANNY
It takes me a day or three to remember to check the scores of other games sometimes.
ACE
So what are we gonna do during this game?
DEVIN
With any luck we get kicked out of our own bullpen again. It is pretty foolish of them to even have us show up when it’s other guys who are gonna need to warm up.
CHARLES
I don’t know about anyone else but I’m gonna watch the game. It’s playoffs, how can you miss it?
CHARLES turns his head and looks at the plate.
CHARLES
Anyone know if that was a ball or a strike?
MANNY
The seats are terrible back here, how would I know? We’re low down and far back.
LORENZO
I for one think the seats are very comfortable.
CHARLES
But you can’t see anything.
LORENZO
Doesn’t stop the seats from being comfortable.
CHARLES
I’m gonna find a better seat. Who’s with me?
DEVIN
Where were you thinking? I don’t feel like walking too far.
CHARLES climbs on top of the roof on top of the bullpen’s bench and sits down.
CHARLES
Right here is good.
DEVIN, ACE, MANNY, FELIX, and ROBERT all join CHARLES.
ROBERT
Wow, this actually is a better seat. For someone who wants to watch the game at least.
DEVIN starts swinging his legs.
LORENZO
Ow! Who kicked me?!
DEVIN
My bad Lorenzo. You should join us up here.
LORENZO
Or you could join me down here.
DEVIN
That’s ok.
LORENZO
Alright then.
LORENZO lies down and takes a nap.
CHARLES
Good to actually be able to see the game a bit now.
ACE
I’m bored.
CHARLES
OH COME ON THAT WAS A STRIKE!!!!!!!!
DEVIN
As far as I could tell it was a passed ball.
ROBERT
I was thinking wild pitch.
DEVIN
What’s the difference?
ROBERT
A passed ball is when the pitcher lets the ball by him and a wild pitch is when a catcher doesn’t catch it. Or something like that.
FELIX
Either way I think we can agree it wasn’t a strike.
MANNY
I don’t think you guys are gonna agree on that. Maybe it’s not worth trying to figure out if something’s a ball or a strike.
CHARLES
Fair enough.
ACE
So what should we do?
ROBERT
We can start the wave.
ROBERT puts his hands up in the air. Everyone else in the bullpen follows, except LORENZO, who is still napping.
HARRY
Didn’t work.
ROBERT
Yeah, guess we have to try again.
HARRY
I never said that.
ROBERT throws his hands in the air again. Nobody follows.
ROBERT
Come on, really guys? We can do this!
ACE
Fine. But this time it better work.
ROBERT starts the wave again. The large screen behind the crowd in the outfield zooms in on the bullpen, and fans begin to get in on the wave.
ROBERT
It’s working!!!
FELIX
I never thought this would’ve been the way I’d make a contribution to a playoff game.
The wave comes to an end after circling around the stadium.
HARRY
Hate to say this but the camera’s still on us. Everyone in the stadium is waiting to see what we do next.
DEVIN
Uh oh, think quick! What’s something we can do…
FELIX
Look again, I don’t think we need to do anything.
DEVIN looks up to the screen and sees Lorenzo sound asleep. The entire crowd starts to sing a lullaby.
MANNY
Yikes, we’ve successfully managed to turn the entire crowd’s attention away from a playoff game.
ACE
Does anyone even know what inning it is?
CHARLES
It WAS the ninth inning but the Primitives just won.
ACE
Oh yeah. That would probably explain why the rest of the team is running around on the field celebrating.
CHARLES
Think the crowd will notice any time soon?
ACE
Probably not. But we should probably run onto the field too given we’re technically on the team.
MANNY, ACE, CHARLES, DEVIN, ROBERT, FELIX, and HARRY all run onto the field just as the rest of the team heads back to the clubhouse.
ROBERT
Well this is awkward.
MANNY
Tell me about it. Who says we all get out of here?
ROBERT
Me! But someone should at least try to wake up Lorenzo first.
MANNY
I think you just volunteered.
ROBERT starts to jog back to the bullpen when he sees LORENZO charging full speed. Everyone from the bullpen gets in a huddle as LORENZO jumps in the air. They catch him, all fall down in the process, and then slowly get up and stumble off the field.
