Sunday Ratings: Quantico Flops Against the World Series

Sunday Ratings: Quantico Flops Against the World Series
I'm still working on the table. For now, here are the numbers.

ABC

America's Funniest Home Videos: 1.0
Once Upon a Time: 1.5
Blood & Oil: 0.8
Quantico: 1.2

Bad night all-around for ABC. Don't expect to see Quantico in the Certain to be Renewed category on Friday--I was cautious about moving it, and now the week I finally do so, it collapses! Of course, there was baseball and football to compete against, but a 1.2 in October is a 1.2 in October, and a fractional number in the spring. The already dead Blood & Oil may have taken it down a little too. Once Upon a Time continues its slump. At this rate, there may be no more than one or two seasons left, as it is no longer up with the rest of ABC's hits (which basically all exist on Wednesday and Thursday now).

CBS

60 Minutes: 1.5
Madam Secretary: 1.1
The Good Wife: 0.9
CSI: Cyber: 0.8

Well, 60 Minutes had a respectable number at least. I don't know what CBS is planning on doing next season--based on ratings alone, all of these shows should be gone ASAP. In fact, a case could have been made to answer all three of them last season. I think CBS will finally retire The Good Wife, but after that, who knows? All that can be said is that these Sunday dramas are struggling big time as CBS becomes even less of a competitor on the night.

FOX

NFL: 8.3
NFL/The OT: 6.9
World Series Game 5: 5.1/4.8/4.4 (no ratings yet for the 11pm or 12am hour)

If I find them, I will update this post with the 11pm and 12am hours of the World Series, which I suspect will be even higher than a 4.4. It looks like the first hour actually got a little bit of a boost from the NFL. Overall this was a good win for FOX for the World Series ratings-wise, most likely due to both teams having gone about 30 years since winning a series, and one of the markets being New York. The game was a nail biter, and the score does not at all represent how much of a battle this game was.

NBC

Football Night in America: 2.8
Football Pre-Game: 5.8
Football: 7.5/7.7/6.5

I'm not sure what to think of the fact that a regular NFL football game still has absolutely no trouble out-rated a World Series baseball game at its finest. While I don't agree of the appeal that football>baseball, it seems like a lot of Americans disagree with me on this. Now if only NBC could get people to watch their scripted shows more--I can't imagine how they'd be doing if it wasn't for promos during the football games.

Overall this was a great night for live sports fans and a terrible night for anyone who watched a scripted broadcast series. Just goes to show that television is increasingly becoming an event watch, whereas people are perfectly content with watching scripted shows on another platform.

(R): Rerun
(LY): The numbers are from last year's finale
Please note that last year's numbers are taken from the whole hour statistics, not the half-hours.

ABC did very well last night, all of its shows except Blood & Oil being stable. Once Upon a Time kept the 1.8 it had last week and stayed stable during the hour. The same with Quantico, which obtained a 1.9 again but was down slightly in the last half-hour. Nonetheless, it's quite impressive for a new show to obtain the same rating it had on its premiere week. The weakness of the night is definitely Blood & Oil, down two tenths from its already deceiving premiere week score.

CBS did a great performance too, especially for Madam Secretary, up five tenths compared to last year's finale, but also down five tenths when compared to its series premiere. Nothing to be ashamed of, though. The Good Wife stayed quite stable, keeping its last year's finale score of 1.2, and down slightly from last season's premiere which obtained a 1.4. The last show of the CSI franchise continues its downfall, ending the night with a 1.0.

NBC, of course, leads the night with football. Nothing new here.

FOX's comedies are boosted by football this week. But it's way down from last year's premieres! Compared to those numbers, The Simpsons lost the equivalent of Last Man on Earth's rating and Family Guy lost 2.8 points. They're still good numbers though.

What do you think of those ratings? Is your favorite show down? What did YOU watch? Tell us in the comments!

Ratings Premiere Predictions: Madam Secretary and The Good Wife

Ratings Premiere Predictions: Madam Secretary and The Good Wife
Madam Secretary

Network: CBS
Time slot: Sunday at 8
Competition: NFL Football, Once Upon A Time, The Simpsons, Brooklyn 9-9
Lead-in: 60 Minutes
Lead-out: The Good Wife
2014 Premiere: 2.0 A18-49 (and 14.75 million viewers!)
2015 Finale: 1.0 A18-49

Madam Secretary was issued an early renewal at the January TCAs along with NCIS: NO and Scorpion. It was usually in the mid to high 1s, and an amazingly disproportionate number of total viewers (#2 most-watched new show of the season next to Empire). However, it was also benefitting from a large 60 Minutes lead-in, which in turn was benefitting from football. After the renewal, ratings fell hard, going fractional a few times and hitting a mere 1.0 rating for its finale.

On fellow ratings blog SpottedRatings, they play a game where the commenters have to guess which shows will be renewed and cancelled after just seeing the first two ratings points. Out of the 33 votes, 31 of the users were confident the show would be cancelled, with another user leaning cancellation as well. Against the thoughts of 97% of the commenters, the show was renewed. And to think they were looking at its highest numbers! Either CBS realizes these low numbers and takes it off the schedule before the season ends, or they actually try to get it to syndication (but who would want to buy it?). I'm going to go incredibly optimistic on this one because of football, but I also expect its ratings to be half of this by spring. The rating also depends on when football ends (and thus how much of its rating 60 Minutes holds).

Range: 0.8-1.6
Prediction: 1.6

The Good Wife

Network: CBS
Time Slot: Sunday at 9
Competition: NFL Football, Blood & Oil, The Last Man on Earth, Family Guy, various major cable
Lead-in: Madam Secretary
Lead-out: CSI: Cyber
2013 Premiere: 1.5 A18-49
2014 Premiere: 1.4 A18-49
2015 Finale: 1.2 A18-49

The Good Wife must be a great maker of syndication money, as it has not seen good numbers in years in terms of raw ratings. Some also suggest that it being an awards contender and going relatively well in upscale homes is another factor. Regardless, don't expect much in the ratings from this show, which has gone fractional before, especially giving the shows surrounding it. Cases have been made to cancel all three of the Sunday shows, and CBS is definitely in for a tough night throughout the year unless they make some changes. I'm going to predict that it stays in the range of its previous two premieres and most recent finale, while also continuing the trend of falling one tenth in raw numbers for each premiere.

Range: 0.9-1.5
Prediction: 1.3
