Sleepy Hollow Canceled by FOX

FOX has canceled low-rated supernatural drama Sleepy Hollow after 4 seasons, the latest of which struggled on Fridays. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide. Sleepy Hollow starred Tom Mison as Ichabod Crane. Other members of the cast included Nicole Beharie, Lyndie Greenwood, Orlando Jones, and Katia Winter. The series first premiered on September 16, 2013, and the series finale aired on March 31, 2017. The series premiere managed a 3.5 in the 18-49 ratings and 10.1 million viewers while the series finale managed just a 0.5 and 1.7 million viewers. Finals Update: Last Man Standing (1.1) adjusted up, putting it up year-to-year from its 5th season finale. The Originals (0.3) adjusted down. 

On a night jam-packed with finales, ABC's Last Man Standing (1.0) finished off a 6th season steady with its previous outing and its 5th season finale. On the other hand, Dr. Ken (0.7) fell a tenth from its last outing to a brand new series low, a far cry from last year's 0.9, Ken's fate is still up in the air so this data point is not a good sign. ABC had yet another repeat of Shark Tank (0.7) at 9, it will return for a new episode next week alongside the debut of the Toy Box. The alphabet network capped off the night with 20/20 (0.8) up a tenth from its last installment. 

With NCAA over, CBS had the return of their drama line-up, MacGyver (0.9) and Hawaii Five-0 (1.0) both inched down from their last results, but Blue Bloods (1.1) managed to rise despite the long break.

After 6 years, Grimm (0.9) ended a 6-season run up a tenth from its last outing and matched its season high, it was also even with its 5th season finale. NBC capped off the night with more Dateline (0.9), it was down a tenth from last week and had  0.9/1.0 half-hours. 

FOX had a finale of their own as Sleepy Hollow (0.5) ended its fourth (final?) season even with its last episode. Leading into the meager drama was an equally meager Rosewood (0.5), the sophomore drama was down a tenth and hit a new low. 

It was steady as usual over on The CW as The Originals (0.4) and Reign (0.2) both matched their last outings.

Finals Update: All programs held their preliminary 18-49 rating.


CBS preempted their drama line-up for a second week for March Madness coverage (2.2/2.2/2.8). Overall, it averaged a 2.4 from 8-11, that's a huge improvement from last week's 1.3. The drama line-up will be back in originals next week.

ABC's comedy duo, Last Man Standing (1.0) and Dr. Ken (0.8), were steady with their week-ago results with just one episode left of their respective seasons. At 10, 20/20 (0.7) was down a tenth from its last original after a repeat of Shark Tank (0.7).

NBC's Grimm (0.8) was steady just a week before its series finale. On the other hand, Dateline (1.0) had a two-tenth rise.


FOX's Sleepy Hollow (0.5) rose a tenth after weeks of 0.4s leading out of yet another repeat of Rosewood (0.5).

The CW saw The Originals (0.4) rise a tenth in week 2 after a rather lackluster start, but Reign (0.2) remained low.

Finals Update: NCAA Coverage adjusted down and averaged a 1.3 from 8-10. Dateline (0.8) adjusted down.

CBS retired their drama trio for a night in favor of a night of March Madness (1.4/1.8/1.4), it performed significantly better than a typical drama night and single-handedly beat out any other programming of the night.

ABC's comedies, Last Man Standing (1.0) and Dr. Ken (0.8), remained frozen at their series lows, both shows have only one more episode to air before their respective season finales. After the comedies, ABC benched Shark Tank and 20/20 for a 2-hour Manson special (1.1). At 9, it was significantly below an average Shark Tank, but it was a good bit above an average 20/20 installment at 10.

NBC's Grimm (0.8) inched up from last week but Dateline (0.8/0.9) was down from last week's 1.0.

Fox's Rosewood (0.4) continued to air out repeats alongside anemic Sleepy Hollow originals (0.4).


The CW had the season premiere of The Originals (0.3) and more of Reign (0.2). The former was significantly below an average Vampire Diaries installment.

Why Is The Last Man On Earth A Likely Renewal?
The Last Man On Earth returned better than I expected, and now sits at an 88 in A18-49 relative to the rest of FOX's average. More importantly, it's stronger than Son of Zorn and seemingly Making History, and I doubt all three Lord Miller Productions will be canceled. Add this with the fact that it sits 3 points above its estimated target and I think we will probably be seeing a 4th season.

Why Is Making History a Likely Cancelation?
Making History is already in the category farthest away from a renewal. While it could somehow be a massive player on non-linear platforms, that's an outside shot given it's already FOX's lowest-rated comedy in the best time slot they can give a comedy.

Why Is Sleepy Hollow in the Leans Cancelation Category?
It took this long, but Sleepy Hollow is now below its already low target. Now at a 45 in relative ratings, the veteran Friday drama has had a string of 0.4 A18-49 Live + Same Day ratings lately, not even managing to grow out of the reruns of Rosewood that air before it.

On All Those Shows in the Leans Renewal Category
Yes, there are five shows in Leans Renewal. The two veterans (New Girl, Rosewood) are a combined 5 points away from their targets, and by that metric all could really go either way.  Meanwhile, I don't think they'll give up on 24: Legacy so fast given all the promotional push, and The Exorcist is actually one of the higher-rated FOX Friday 9pm fall shows in some time. Nothing would shock me right now with these five shows, and while right now all five are looking safe, I expect that to change.
