Welcome to First Week Peak, a column which discusses shows that are about to premiere on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Paramount+, HBO Max, Peacock, Hulu, and/or Apple TV. Each discussion concludes with a prediction for the show's weekly peak performance on their respective streaming service's U.S. trending chart, including a reader poll. Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story is the fourth installment of Netflix's anthology series Monster, which was co-created by Ryan Murphy and dramatizes true crime stories. True crime has been extraordinarily popular for Netflix as of late, and the third installment of the series reached #1 on Netflix's weekly #1 last October. An already-promising 3.4 Attention Score gives every reason to believe Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story will manage at least one day, if not more, atop Netflix's daily Top 10 chart in the US.
MobLand
While MobLand has already been renewed for a third season on Paramount+, a #1 peak this coming week is far from guaranteed. Given it premieres September 18, it will only have two chances to reach #1 before a new week begins. This is a tall order given episodes drop weekly, rather than all at once, and Lioness continues to dominate the Paramount+ chart (with South Park also eking out #1 days here and there.) MobLand was also a rare find at #1 in its first season, and more often hung out around the #2-#5 range. This is predicted to happen again for its second season. However, MobLand already has the third-highest Attention Score of all Paramount+ originals, and while it does have some ways to go to catch Lioness' 29.0, it does show early signs of an upcoming sophomore season that could outperform the first.
Slow Horses
Like MobLand, Slow Horses is in a very strong position to premiere well on the platform that hosts it, but a #1 peak seems just out of reach. While Slow Horses should be able to surpass Silo, which has now wrapped its third season, it will still be competing against an ongoing Ted Lasso. Slow Horses is already in the upper half of Apple TV's Top 10 chart, and is all but guaranteed to premiere no worse than #4. While it has a chance of eventually surpassing Ted Lasso, it may have to wait for now. This is despite an incredibly promising 17.2 Attention Score, which is further proof of Apple TV's growing ability to create shows that generate buzz. It's still the only platform that loses money, and it loses a lot of it, but what's $1 billion to a company worth almost $5 trillion.
Neagley
Prime Video is arguably the toughest streamer to predict ahead of a show's premiere. The platform has an uncanny ability to give their shows strong launches, but is far more likely to judge a show's performance by how it is doing a month or so out from its premiere than how it does upon its premiere. While Neagley's 5.4 Attention Score (7th-highest for a Prime Video original) is certainly promising, there's truly no saying where it's going to be in a month. This show could stay at #1 for a week, reach a 50 Attention Score, and still be canceled by Thanksgiving if it can't sustain success. For now, though, there are no signs to reasonably predict a cancelation, which makes the prediction default to Renew.
Route 187
Route 187 was ordered to series by BET in April 2024 as part of an overall new deal with Tyler Perry. Now that BET hardly airs any original programming and BET+ has been folded into Paramount+, Route 187 will premiere nearly 30 months later as a Paramount+ original. It will be the first ever Tyler Perry show to do so. BET+ shows have had varying success on Paramount+, with most managing to make at least brief appearances at the lower end of the Top 10 chart. Route 187 may be able to perform on the better end of this, but it'd be a shock to see it competing with the likes of Lioness and MobLand.
Stranger Things: Tales from '85
Netflix's animated Stranger Things spinoff only peaked at #6 on Netflix's daily Top 10 chart, and was on the chart for just six days. That's not great for a spinoff of one of Netflix's biggest hits of all time. Netflix has also fallen out of love with the Duffer Brothers now that they've signed a new deal with Paramount Skydance, with their new drama The Boroughs swiftly canceled earlier this year. Given its Attention Score is currently below a 1, Stranger Things: Tales from '85 is predicted to premiere on the lower end of Netflix's Top 10 chart and be canceled.
Golden Axe
Paramount+ is premiering three new originals this coming week. One of these is the adult animated sitcom Golden Axe, which has a similar development story to Route 187. Golden Axe was ordered to series in April 2024, just one day after Route 187, and was originally intended to air as a Comedy Central original. Hardly anything airs as a Comedy Central original anymore, and Golden Axe will instead be a Paramount+ original. This seems like one of those shows that was ordered a while back and they had to premiere eventually, so they picked a week where they already had two other shows premiering in hopes few people noticed its failure. I'll be generous and say it sneaks into the Top 10 for at least a day, but it won't be here to stay.
Gabby's Dollhouse
Gabby's Dollhouse will return with its six-episode 14th season this coming week on Netflix. While the series did not chart on Netflix's Top 10 in March for its 13th season, its popularity as a children's IP has led to its early renewal for eight final episodes behind this 14th season. It likely will not chart within the Top 10, though, even as its Attention Score eclipses that of Stranger Things: Tales of '85, given the latter is much more likely to rise in the coming days than the former.
