Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD to End with Season 7

The end is in sight for ABC's long-running comic book series Agents of SHIELD, as the series has been confirmed to end with its upcoming 7th season. The show scored a (very) early renewal last year for the seventh season, over half a year before the show began its season 6 run on Fridays during summer. The show hasn't been a strong performer for the network for some time, and it didn't have a successful syndication run, but the show was an important one for ABC and Marvel, both of which are owned by Disney. Like with season 6, the final, seventh season of the series will run for 13 episodes. So far in season 6, SHIELD has averaged a 0.42 and has been one of the very few original series to air on Fridays this summer. Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, and Chloe Bennet star in the series.

Agents of SHIELD Renewed by ABC

Agents of SHIELD Renewed by ABC
ABC has renewed Marvel's Agents of SHIELD for a sixth season.

Along with Once Upon a Time, Agents of SHIELD was moved to Friday nights this season. Both disappointed in the ratings, especially Once Upon a Time, which led to its cancelation, announced this winter. However, Agents of SHIELD is going the other way. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

ABC Renew/Cancel - May 4: Final Predictions 2017-18

ABC's annual upfront presentation, where they will release their 2018 fall schedule, is on Tuesday, May 15. To prepare for this, we will be getting renewals and cancelations (as well as decisions on pilots). Based on the last couple of years, expect most of ABC's news to come on Thursday, May 10. For these final predictions, I will talk about every single one of ABC's shows that have yet to be renewed or canceled, sorted by confidence, beginning with the shows that I think are most certain to be renewed or canceled and ending with the shows I think are the biggest bubble shows.

Format for predictions:
Show title (average 18-49 rating, season low-high)

Certain to be Canceled
Alex, Inc. (0.9, 0.6-1.3)
The Crossing (0.7, 0.5-0.9)
Inhumans (0.6, 0.4-0.9)
Kevin Probably Saves the World (0.7, 0.4-1.0)

Likely to be Canceled
Deception (0.8, 0.6-1.2)
For the People (0.7, 0.5-0.9)

Likely to be Renewed
Agents of SHIELD (0.6, 0.4-0.7)
Designated Survivor (0.7, 0.5-1.1)
Fresh Off the Boat (1.0, 0.9-1.4)
Quantico (0.5, 0.5-0.5)
Speechless (1.2, 0.9-1.4)

Certain to be Renewed
American Housewife (1.2, 1.0-1.6)
Black-ish (1.2, 0.9-2.6)
How to Get Away with Murder (1.0, 0.8-1.1)
Splitting Up Together (1.4, 1.0-2.1)
Station 19 (1.1, 1.0-1.2)

Fate Determined
The Goldbergs (RENEWED)
The Good Doctor (RENEWED)
Grey's Anatomy (RENEWED)
The Mayor (DE-FACTO CANCELED)
The Middle (FINAL SEASON)
Modern Family (RENEWED)
Once Upon a Time (CANCELED)
Roseanne (RENEWED)
Scandal (FINAL SEASON)
Ten Days in the Valley (DE-FACTO CANCELED)

How to Get Away with Murder: While Thursday nights aren't what they used to be for ABC, they are still where most of the network's higher rated dramas are. Scandal is ending, but Grey's Anatomy has been renewed, and the third and final member of the original TGIT, How to Get Away with Murder, will definitely join it.

American Housewife: ABC attempted to give their latest in-house comedy success a lead-in upgrade this season, and while that didn't exactly work out as planned, American Housewife continued to rate well, and ABC will certainly take it to syndication.

Black-ish: The other ABC Studios comedy on the network got moved to Tuesdays this year, and while it didn't weather the move as well as ABC had likely hoped, Black-ish is still a solid enough performer, and that combined with the network's love for the show makes renewal certain.

Alex, Inc: This season's new Wednesday comedy didn't do that poorly at first, though it was clear it would only last the one season. After collapsing without an original lead-in, Alex Inc's fate was set in stone.

Station 19: The spin-off of Grey's Anatomy hasn't been incredibly impressive, but Station 19's stability and solid ratings make it a lock to return.

Inhumans: After a horribly-rated run on Fridays, there was no way this show was going to return. If a Marvel series must be renewed, it will certainly be Agents of SHIELD, not Inhumans.

Splitting Up Together: ABC's comedy slate is very successful, though this hasn't been the best year for them when it comes to new comedies. Splitting Up Together is the exception there, and with it retaining most of its lead-in each week, there's no reason not to renew.

Kevin Probably Saves the World: After a start that wasn't that bad for the timeslot and seeming support from the network, this show didn't look bad. However, Kevin Probably ended up fading, and ABC's support for the series followed. Now, they have better options for a third new drama renewal.

The Crossing: I have downgraded this show from "likely to be canceled" to "certain to be canceled" this week. Before, it looked like it was competing with For the People and Deception for a spot that may or may not be available (more on that later). Now, with it collapsing week-to-week with a different lead-in, having a percentage decline higher than its lead-in week-to-week, it is clear that The Crossing has virtually no audience of its own. There's no way it's going to return,

Fresh Off the Boat: This show is the weakest of ABC's returning comedies, and it is weaker than freshman Splitting Up Together. Still, I think it will get renewed. Fresh Off the Boat is very close to having enough episodes for 20th Century FOX to sell it into syndication, so the production company will ensure that the show gets a season five, probably on ABC.

Quantico: It probably won't be decided on during May anyway, but I am predicting its renewal just in case it is. Quantico was renewed last season with just as abysmal ratings.

Designated Survivor: While its ratings have not been impressive this season at all, ABC is struggling enough in drama that they don't look all that bad. Plus, Designated Survivor has streaming deals with Netflix internationally and Hulu domestically, which may be helping it make a profit. The ratings decline could lead to cancelation, but I'm doubting it.

For the People: With The Good Doctor and Station 19 performing well enough for renewal, and comedy hours possibly expanding, ABC probably doesn't really need to renew a third new drama. However, they might end up needing to, perhaps if they don't have enough drama pilots that they want to order to series to fill all of the timeslots. In that case, one of For the People or Deception may get renewed. I'm leaning Deception, but either could happen.

Deception: If you read what I said about For the People, you probably know what I have to say about this show. There's a chance that one of the two is renewed, and I think that Deception is a little bit more likely than For the People. I think the most likely scenario is both canceled, but that isn't a sure thing.

Speechless: One of ABC's two biggest bubble shows, this comedy really could go either way, and it is most likely dependent on whether or not ABC decides to expand from four to five comedy hours next season. With four comedy hours, they already have so many slots filled that they will want to give all of the remaining ones to new comedies. With five, they probably want to bring Speechless back so a new comedy doesn't have to get stuck in a lower priority timeslot, plus Speechless is a somewhat solid performer, so it does deserve a renewal. I think that expansion is the more likely option, but it's far from a guarantee just yet.

Agents of SHIELD: This show's fate all comes down to whether or not Disney lets ABC make the decision. It was reported that ABC wanted to cancel the series last year, but the parent company insisted on renewal, likely due to corporate synergy, with SHIELD being a Marvel series. Will the same happen again this season? It's hard to say. This season, the show is being given an ending that works as a series ending. It's possible that this is what Disney wanted, a resolution so that the show works better on streaming. However, I'm thinking that synergy is the real reason, and that hasn't changed. Plus, if Disney was allowing the series to end, it would make the most sense for ABC to promote this as the final season. So, I am predicting renewal, but nothing would surprise me here.

ABC Renew/Cancel - February 2: Agents of SHIELD is Likely to be Renewed

ABC Renew/Cancel - February 2: Agents of SHIELD is Likely to be Renewed
Things are about to slow down for a little while on the ratings front, particularly with scripted shows, as the Winter Olympics on NBC send the other networks into repeats for the most part. ABC is only scheduled to air one new episode of one scripted show between the Opening Ceremony on Friday, February 9 and the Closing Ceremony on Sunday, February 25 (more on that later). For now though, ABC is programming more like usual, with five scripted shows having aired new episodes on the network int he last week.

Format for predictions:
Show title (average 18-49 rating, season low-high)

Certain to be Canceled

Likely to be Canceled
Inhumans (0.6, 0.4-0.9)
Kevin Probably Saves the World (0.7, 0.6-1.0)

Toss-Up
Speechless (1.2, 1.0-1.4)

Likely to be Renewed
Agents of SHIELD (0.6, 0.5-0.7)
Designated Survivor (0.8, 0.7-1.1)
Fresh Off the Boat (1.1, 0.9-1.4)
Once Upon a Time (0.5, 0.5-0.7)

Certain to be Renewed
American Housewife (1.3, 1.0-1.6)

Ten Days in the Valley (DE-FACTO CANCELED)

Agents of SHIELD: I'm still predicting renewal for SHIELD despite ratings that aren't so strong for the same reason that I predicted its renewal from the start, and the reason that ABC renewed it last year. It isn't really ABC's decision. The parent company, Disney, made ABC renew the show, according to an article published by Variety in September. It isn't a lock to return, but I don't see why what saved it last year won't save it this year.

Kevin Probably Saves the World: One scheduling move recently indicated that ABC is no longer supporting Kevin Probably, and now there is another to join that. ABC is airing a new episode of the show on February 20, up against the Winter Olympics. Maybe they are trying to see what a different lead-in (The Bachelor Winter Games) will do for the show, but it's more likely that this is more of a burn-off episode.

ABC Schedule Analysis

The Ratings Junkie Monday, August 10, 2015
Note: This article has been edited to adjust to changes made in the schedule since its original publishing in May.

Overview

If there is any network schedule so far that has played it safe, it was this one. For months, I have been trying to think of how ABC could optimize their comedy success, and which comedy would be forced to leave the night to do so. Turns out, none of them did, with the entire Wednesday lineup staying intact. Although unexpected to me, it was a pleasant surprise given that The Middle is my favorite TV series, and I could not have asked for a better pairing by ABC than The Middle and The Goldbergs. Stability is the goal here, and it appears that this is because they have great confidence in The Muppets. It is being asked to self-start Tuesdays and give a boost to midseason entry Fresh Off The Boat. When The Muppets leaves the air midseason, Fresh is expected to anchor the hour once again, showing that ABC has confidence in both The Muppets and its power as a lead-in. Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays also stayed the same, with the exception of Dr. Ken on at 8:30 on Fridays instead of Cristela. The only real news was Sunday: unexpectedly a Nashville-less night that will be led by Once Upon A Time, followed by new entries Oil and Of Kings and Prophets Blood & Oil and Quantico.

Analysis

Monday
On March 9, 2009, ABC premiered Castle. Although a bubble show at first, it has passed the test of time and has become a very steady performer for the network—that is, until this season, when ratings have fallen down to very mediocre levels at best. However, Castle is now entering its eight season airing behind Dancing with the Stars on Mondays. Some say it has been under this protection for way too long, while others see stability as the better option. ABC kept Castle in its timeslot at the expense that two new dramas in a row will have to air on Sundays, which historically means that either one or none will be successful.

Tuesday
ABC's Tuesday schedule has improved dramatically from the last two seasons. In 2013-2014, SHIELD underwhelmed to the point where the underrated Trophy Wife did not feel any boost, leading into an even more abysmal rating for the many shows they tried to air after it.  Both that season and this season, ABC has consistently had two shows on their Tuesday schedule which has struggled to break a 1.0. This season, the high-profiled Muppets are asked to self-start on the fall
schedule, which is something it most likely will do well. For starters, it already has much hype, the trailer was well-received, and insiders report that ABC loved its presentation even more so than the other comedies they ordered to series. Although many expected either Blackish or The Middle in the time slot, this could actually work. I would encourage everyone to give it a try—I did not expect to like the trailer nearly as much as I did. This would lead into Fresh Off The Boat, which did a decent job self-starting this season. It was good enough for a renewal, but not good enough to be considered a breakout hit. With a good leadin and maybe even some awards love for Constance Wu, we should see it grow. SHIELD will follow at 9, and then the male-skewing Quantico Wicked City at 10. The question is if Quantico Wicked City can defy the odds by being a hit show despite a mediocre lead-in. ABC has not seen much success in that time slot in years.

Wednesday
Every time I watch The Middle (which is every week), ABC starts with an announcement along the lines of "Tonight's all-new with The Middle, The Goldbergs, Modern Family, and Blackish, later Nashville and Kimmel". Turns out everyone watching The Middle will hear that exact same announcement next season, despite speculation of something moving away from the night. I'm genuinely surprised that neither The Goldbergs nor Blackish will be anchors, and
that neither The Middle nor Blackish will be paired with Fresh Off The Boat on Tuesdays. This proves ABC's confidence in The Muppets, which hopefully works out for their sake—last time they overestimated the power of SHIELD and as a result The Goldbergs did not see the ratings they presumably thought it would. Nashville not moving to Sundays is a shocker to me. Considering Secrets & Lies, which was on Sunday this spring, will be used as a gap show for Nashville, I was surprised they didn't move them to Sunday at 10, otherwise known as the syndication farm slot. I think the Blackish leadin can be used for much better, and that they should have picked up a dramedy. Maybe Mix just wasn't executed well enough. The only reason I can think of to keep Nashville as is because it airs an hour after Empire, albeit on a different network, and maybe ABC hopes that this time around viewers of Empire will want to switch over to Nashville at the end to hear some more singing?

Thursday
#TGIT is back in the fall. That, of course, stands for Thank God It's Thursday, and is the hashtag that has taken over Twitter as hype for Shondaland's three shows: Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder. As expected, her fourth show, The Catch, will premiere in the spring after How to Get Away with Murder's limited run (~16 episodes). Although Scandal has
weakened this spring and fans are mad at Grey's Anatomy, I still think this night will remain the cultural phenomenon is was this season. If The Catch ends up being huge in the ratings, Grey's may be a dark horse to be retired at the end of the season.

Friday
The format of Friday also remains the same: the continuation of multi-cam comedies at 8pm led by Last Man Standing, business reality show Shark Tank at 9pm, and long-running interview news show 20/20 at 10pm. This time, instead of Makibu Country, The Neighbors, or Cristela, the unlucky 8:30 show will be Dr. Ken, led by Community and The Hangover's Ken Jeong, with my reason for potentially tuning in being Trophy Wife's Albert Tsai. ABC seems to have little to no confidence in the show, considering their 0/3 record for the Friday at 8:30 comedy spot, and the fact that it has already been announced that Uncle Buck will be replacing it midseason. This is subject to change, of course, but I think this will be another under-advertised Albert Tsai show.

Sunday
ABC is taking a big risk on Sunday, and quite frankly I do not think it will work out for them. They will stay steady for the first two hours, leading off with America's Funniest Home Videos at 7pm and Once Upon A Time at 8pm, but after that they are premiering two new dramas. The first one, Blood & Oil, is not very hyped right now, while 10pm Biblical show Of Kings and Prophets seems like it
would work more as a show following Once Upon A Time show Quantico looks like it may be cursed by its less-than-ideal time slot despite good critical reviews and hype from fans of the trailer on sites such as SpoilerTV. Assuming all these shows had to make the fall schedule, I think it would have been wise to schedule Oil Quantico Wednesday at 10, and Nashville Sunday at 10, and Of Kings and Prophets at 9.
