Beat Shazam: Last week marked Beat Shazam's first time airing in two years, as it returned for its eighth season. The reason for its long disappearance from Fox's schedule remains a mystery, as it was renewed back in 2024 and filmed in spring 2025, so it was certainly available to return in summer 2025. What we do know for sure is that its premiere drew a solid 0.24, retaining 96% of its Kitchen Nightmares lead-in. Like other Fox game shows, it's only had middling results on streaming, but linear ratings are the most important datapoint for these casually-viewed game shows. The show averaged a 0.22 in 2024, in an 8 PM slot on Thursdays, which actually marked a slight increase from its 2023 showing. Its season high was a 0.27. Its 0.24 last week is a touch below that, but higher than both its premiere and finale for season seven. That's an impressive hold, given how much time viewers have had to forget about it. It's higher than the averages for five other Fox summer series (including MasterChef), and only a touch behind Kitchen Nightmares and Nation's Dumbest. Based on ratings alone, it's a very safe bet to return.
What gives me a bit of pause is Fox's decision to bench it. They opted to order several new shows and give summer runs to some of their cartoon sitcoms rather than putting it on the schedule. It was then held until midway through their summer season, with a likely short order, rather than debuting earlier, alongside their late spring/early summer lineup. Is Fox falling out of love with Beat Shazam? Or does its unusual scheduling not really mean much at all? Unlike the also-renewed Don't Forget the Lyrics, Beat Shazam at least got to see the light of day this season, so at least it won't be sitting on the shelf for two full seasons. I imagine a show like this isn't difficult to get back into production, and the premiere ratings are encouraging, so Fox may opt for a renewal. It's hard to imagine them letting it go with ratings like this when so many of their other reality shows are performing worse, especially when they do, theoretically, have plenty of room for it - Thursdays have been vacant throughout the summer. It leans renewal as it returns from a hiatus, and I expect it to remain a staple of Fox summers.
The 1% Club: Speaking of Fox summer staples, The 1% Club is a show that has defied the odds. Originally an Amazon Prime Video production that was simply getting a broadcast window on Fox, it has become a reliably solid performer for Fox in the summer months. They went through the effort of acquiring the series after Amazon decided against ordering a second season, picking up production rights to this adaptation of a popular international format. They've been rewarded with stable, in unexceptional, ratings since then. Despite a host change and several time slot changes, The 1% Club continues to deliver roughly the same ratings that it did in its first season, and actually hit a new series high this season. Fox seems to value it, too, airing regularly-scheduled repeats of the series on Thursday nights. There's no reason to expect that Fox will part with it this season when it's so consistent and when they continue to prioritize it. It's a certain renewal.
