This week on the Summer Renew/Cancel, we take a closer look at a Dancing with the Stars spinoff that's failed to live up to the hype of its parent series. Keep reading to see my first post-premiere outlook on the series' future.

Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro: After its premiere, I expressed hesitancy about the sustainability of The Next Pro's premise, leading to a weaker prediction for it than its 0.43 premiere rating would generally warrant. As time went on, I became quite glad for my initial conservative estimate, as it would spent the next three episodes dropping, ultimately drawing a rating less than half its premiere rating. In other words, the sustainability of the premise isn't ABC's biggest concern here anymore.
The Next Pro went from drawing hit ratings to drawing the lowest ratings of any show on ABC's summer lineup (all... four of them). It's losing consistently to American Ninja Warrior, and even Fox's Monday game shows are rivaling it. It simply hasn't been able to keep viewers interested. It's not a shock that a spinoff of TV's #1 show would hemorrhage viewers over its first season. Plenty of fans of DWTS sampled it before ultimately deciding that it wasn't for them. It's a much different show than DWTS. For one, it doesn't feature any celebrities. It's arguably closer in premise to So You Think You Can Dance (which started the careers of several DWTS pros) than its own parent show, and we know how that show has performed in recent years.
Ratings for The Next Pro aren't outright disastrous. A show with a 0.29 average would generally be pretty safe, especially in the summer. Press Your Luck has a lower average, and looks well-positioned for a renewal. But this is a Dancing with the Stars spinoff, and it's looking like a major letdown. Yes, it did rise a bit last week, but even at 0.25, it's nearly two full tenths below its premiere rating. A show premiering to 0.43 and sinking to a 0.29 average in only five episodes is pretty embarrassing. I expect ABC had much higher hopes for this show, and another season could even risk overexposure of their crown jewel, as we've seen with The Bachelor, which they won't want to risk.
Its best hope is that it's streaming well enough to survive. It's done decently on Disney+, but it's clearly declined there, too. It's also out-performing the ABC game shows on Hulu, but reality competition shows nearly always do better on streaming than casually-viewed game shows. There are mixed signs on just how well it's doing on streaming, and I think it would need to be a clear streaming success for them to want another season. It leans cancellation.
