Three players for the Fisher Fishers run into each other in the team’s clubhouse. The game is set to begin in less than 10 minutes. CARTER
Hey, either of you know which way it is to the dugout?
WILLIAM [pointing straight ahead]
Yeah, it’s that way.
CARTER
I knew that! It was a joke! You know I’m kind of a big deal.
WILLIAM
Are you now?
CARTER
I used to be in the majors.
WILLIAM
But you’re not anymore.
CARTER
I’ll be back. Just working on a thing or two down here and next thing you know, I’ll be one of the Indianapolis Primitives’ starting pitchers.
WILLIAM
I also used to be in the majors. 4-time All Star. You still feeling impressed about yourself?
TRISTEN
Alright guys, I don’t want to get in the middle of this but let’s just pretend like you’re both still amazing baseball players who will totally be back in the majors before you know it.
WILLIAM
I never said I would be. This is my career now and I’m fine with it.
TRISTEN
Okay then…anyways, I’ll be out of here long before either of you. My Tommy John surgery recovery should be over in no time.
CARTER
Tommy John surgery? You a pitcher too?
TRISTEN
Nope, third baseman. It’s rare, but they’ll perform those things on practically anyone these days.
WILLIAM
Well I’m happy for you that you have the confidence you need.
TRISTEN
Look, the Primitives need a third baseman. They’re fine for pitchers. Carter, you’re more likely to end up in their sorry excuse of a bullpen than be a starter any time soon. Hate to tell you this, but I think you’ve been duped. You’re a minor league pitcher now. Get used to it.
CARTER
No. That can’t be possible. They see potential in me!
TRISTEN
Maybe you’ll make the 40-man roster.
WILLIAM
Hey, that’s my age!
CARTER
How about this: let’s make a bet. First person to leave this team gets $300.
WILLIAM
Deal.
TRISTEN
Seriously? I thought you said you have no intention on going back to the majors!
WILLIAM
He didn’t say leave this team and go to the majors. I have other options. Retirement, for example.
CARTER
Retirement isn’t allowed in this deal.
WILLIAM
Well in that case I’m gonna be playing until I’m 50, aren’t I?
TRISTEN
Let me in on the bet too.
WILLIAM, CARTER, and TRISTEN all leave the clubhouse. CARTER walks onto the mound and immediately gives up a hit. TRISTEN smiles from third base.
