Password: Aside from a one-off Christmas special - which didn't do very well at all - we haven't seen Password in a few years. When we last saw Password airing in a regularly-scheduled format, it did decently well, but given that was two years ago, people had plenty of time to forget about it. There was really no way of knowing how it would return this summer, but putting it back behind America's Got Talent was surely its best chance of success. On premiere night, the pairing worked out pretty well. As AGT surged to a multi-year high, Password drew a 0.29 rating in the key demo. While that's only 58% of its lead-in, it's higher than nearly every Destination X performance last season, with roughly the same retention. It's also likely much cheaper, which certainly helps in a TV era in which every network is penny-pinching. A 0.29 rating is very solid for 10 PM this season, even with a strong lead-in. NBC's own Chicago PD averaged 0.28 this year, and is one of the top 10 PM performers. High Potential averaged 0.34 during its 10 PM run last fall, with a lead-in over twice as strong. If Password can hold up, it's going to be a slam-dunk renewal. Even if it declines a bit, it has some room to drop, especially if AGT does, too. This is an encouraging start for a show that has the potential to be a summer staple for NBC, even during a time when they're clearly scaling back on summer programming. It starts as a likely renewal.
America's Got Talent: You can always rely on America's Got Talent to be one of summer's highest-rated series, but its return last week was still surprisingly strong. Its 0.50 rating marked a three-year high for the series in terms of premieres, and the highest rating for any episode since July 2024. AGT has been dropping about 20% every season since 2018, so returning up 32% from last season is incredibly impressive, especially when you consider it aired against a very strong Stanley Cup Finals game on ABC. AGT was never realistically going to find itself in any trouble this season, but this is a very encouraging return for an expensive legacy show that's been looking less dominant in recent seasons. It's obviously a certain renewal.
