Like with the coverage of the protests in late May and early June, these ratings demonstrate that viewers often turn to CNN for event viewing. The 9pm and 10pm coverage of the Democratic National Convention on CNN oftentimes brought ratings even higher than those of the coverage of the protests.
MSNBC also had its share of good news this week. Its coverage of the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday was the most-viewed program of the week among prime time cable news programs, and was higher-rated in all key demos than the ratings smash Mary Trump interview the network aired in July.
The 10pm hour of Wednesday’s Democratic National Convention featured a speech from former President Barack Obama. The hour topped the weekly chart, narrowly edging out the same hour on Thursday night when viewers awaited Joe Biden’s speech. The speech’s ratings were more than double that of President Trump’s interview on Hannity. Meanwhile, CNN’s lowest-rated 9pm hour of the week came against President Trump’s interview.
While having Barack Obama give a speech was a ratings magnet for CNN, FOX News had less luck. Wednesday’s edition of FNC Democracy 2020: DNC fell sharply from its Hannity lead-in in all key demos. Some viewers returned for The Ingraham Angle, which did not begin until 11:23pm.
As a conservative network, FOX News was much better off carrying an interview with President Donald Trump on Thursday night. The phone interview on Hannity led FOX News’ week in the ratings, and even performed better than many of the other recent Hannity-Trump interviews. Their coverage of the Democratic National Convention had poor retention in the key A25-54 demographic, and was also down significantly with total viewers. This coverage at least managed to out-rate the special Ingraham Angle, which didn’t start until 11:29pm.
