FOX Renew/Cancel: Animal Control Is In Control + 2025-26 Recap

Fox Corporation, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Below are the September 26th Fox renew/cancel predictions for the 2026-27 television season. The table format will return once each show has at least one data point in the 18-49 demographic.

The Simpsons received a multi-season renewal in 2025, so it is already set to return for next season. No prediction will be assigned to it.

It is rare for a sitcom entering its fifth season to be upgraded to one of the best time slots on the network. This fall, Animal Control will be stationed in the coveted post-Simpsons slot on Sunday nights, a time when the NFL lead-in inflates the lineup's numbers to a cartoonish degree. Such preferential treatment makes Fox's intentions clear, so the series begins as a certain renewal.

Traditionally, a move to an anchor slot would be a vote of confidence by the network. But Universal Basic Guys has not proven itself to be a show that can excel at the top of the hour. In winter 2026, Guys often trailed both its lead-in and lead-out, and being at nine instead of 8:30 means that the NFL's positive impact on its numbers will be reduced. But while it will be dealing with a more challenging set of circumstances, Fox has been quite nurturing to its recent cartoon offerings. And while underwhelming at times, Guys has yet to post an 18-49 rating as low as Grimsburg (0.09 rating on 5/12/24) or Krapopolis (0.07 on 4/19/26). If Fox can continue handing out renewals to those two, then this one can start as a likely renewal.

Grimsburg missed the 2025-26 television season entirely, but it is back to a regular Sunday time slot this season. However, airing at 9:30 means it will receive minimal football help, so its performance among adults 18-49 will be more reflective of its actual strength than the other three. What's working against this one is that it has a low attention score and has been removed from Netflix, but Fox giving it a fall slot for the first time in its career is a positive sign. It is likely to be renewed, but it is far from "certain renewal" territory.

Thanks to a sizable football lead-in, Best Medicine returned with a massive 0.85 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The series was consistently a bright spot in the key demographic last season, and the decision to place the start of its sophomore season after The OT shows Fox is still in its corner. This one is a certain renewal.

The 22-episode season is not as common as it once was, and Doc belongs to a shrinking group of shows still afforded such a luxury. The fact that it maintains such a robust order in 2026 means Fox is highly invested in its success. While its performance in the key demo weakened in season two, it remained solid on the streaming front. This is another certain renewal.

2025-26 Recap

Of the twelve scripted offerings Fox aired in the 2025-26 television season, half were renewed in advance for the 2026-27 season. That left just six to provide predictions for. Of the six, there were five correct predictions and one miss (Going Dutch), resulting in an 83% accuracy score for this column.

Universal Basic Guys, Grimsburg & Krapopolis Renewed by Fox

A trio of animated series have been renewed by Fox, roughly a month after the renewals of four other veteran animated series. Grimsburg, Krapopolis and Universal Basic Guys are Fox's three youngest animated series, with Grimsburg and Krapopolis being in their second seasons and Universal Basic Guys having wrapped its first back in December. Krapopolis is now renewed for season five, though its first and second production cycles did air together as season one, so this fifth season renewal may only take it through a fourth aired season. Grimsburg and Universal Basic Guys have both been renewed for third seasons, as Universal Basic Guys had previously been renewed for a second season before its series premiere. Grimsburg is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide, while the other two series did not yet have predictions. These renewals leave The Great North as Fox's only current cartoon series without a renewal decision. That series is in its fifth season, and is set to air the remainder of season five this summer alongside a new summer animated block.

Predictions for 04/19/25

Below are the April 19th renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2024-25 television season. The numbers listed in the table are the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The "Y2Y (year-to-year) Change" column compares a show's current average to its average from the previous season.

All things considered, Krapopolis has had a relatively quiet sophomore season. After being gifted with direct NFL inflation over and over again in fall 2023, the show was demoted to 9:30 in fall 2024, the slot furthest away from The OT. This is precisely why it has the harshest year-to-year decline of the Fox cartoons; as it has largely had to fend for itself in a low-priority half-hour. Its fortunes improved a bit this past week, as Fox decided to promote it to the 9 p.m. time slot, a move that came at the expense of The Great North. And yet, Krapopolis hardly took advantage of this shift. Yes, the series did improve, rising to a 0.14 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic, but it noticeably trailed its Family Guy lead-in (0.21). A 0.14 is a rating it managed at 9:30 with a much weaker Great North lead-in, so it seems to have barely benefited from this time slot upgrade.

Though Krapopolis will be in repeat-mode on Sunday, April 20th and April 27th, Fox has opted to air an original installment of the Greek mythology sitcom on Wednesday, April 30th. The program will have a a new episode of The Masked Singer leading into it and fellow cartoon Grimsburg as its lead-out. Though it is unknown why Fox is suddenly placing the series in an unfamiliar new setting, this could potentially give the animated comedy a much-needed boost. The latest episode of The Masked Singer posted a 0.42 Adults 18-49 rating, a number double that of Krap's current lead-in. If Krap were to retain even half of this lead-in, it could jump to its highest rating in months.

For now, it is unclear if this is a trial run or if Fox will be airing new episodes of Krapopolis on Wednesday nights permanently. They may be testing the waters to see if they can move the series away from the Sunday block in fall 2025. Or, maybe they are truly looking for a place to dump what's left of the show's order. Since it has yet to dip into its fourth production cycle, it is the former that appears more likely.

Fox Renew/Cancel March Madness Wrap-up!

The FOX Renew/Cancel March Madness tournament is officially over. In the final round, Rescue: HI-Surf easily defeated 9-1-1: Lone Star, making it the winner of this match-up. Though HI-Surf had a relatively soft showing in the semi-finals, its devoted fanbase pushed it to its best performance yet this time around. Lone Star also had a career high, but its numbers were not strong enough to propel it to victory. Congratulations to Rescue: HI-Surf for becoming the FOX Renew/Cancel March Madness champion of 2025!

FOX Renew/Cancel 11: What The 4x4 Renewals Mean For The Other 4 Cartoons + FOX Renew/Cancel March Madness Final 4!

Predictions for 04/05/25

Below are the April 5th renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2024-25 television season. The numbers listed in the table are the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The "Y2Y (year-to-year) Change" column compares a show's current average to its average from the previous season.

Earlier this week, the Fox network made a major cartoon commitment, ensuring that multiple familiar titles will be a part of their programming library for the remainder of the decade. Four-season renewals were handed out to four animated staples, meaning that The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob's Burgers, and American Dad! will be airing original episodes on Fox through the 2028-2029 television season. This announcement also doubles as official confirmation that American Dad! will be returning to the network after its decade-long stint on TBS, an idea that was previously floated around by various outlets. The Simpsons, Bob's, and Family Guy were all listed as certain renewals before this announcement, so all three are correct predictions for this column.

So, what does this mean for the less-established Fox cartoons? Does being left out of this mass renewal leave them in jeopardy? For now, it appears that this "megadeal" won't hurt all of them. It's crucial to point out that these four-season pickups come with 15-episode orders, a noticeable departure from the full 22 that was previously the standard. Admittedly, this is good news for the newcomers, as there will be ample room for them to share slots with the legacy cartoons.

However, on a show-by-show basis, each one is dealing with a unique set of circumstances. Universal Basic Guys is already renewed for a second season, so it was never in trouble. Grimsburg has not received an official pickup, but several episodes from its second cycle have yet to air. Episodes with the production codes 202, 206, and 207 have not been placed on the schedule yet, even as 208 and 209 have made it to air. Even without a proper renewal, this means that it will probably be back on the schedule. On top of that, its season two ratings average was on par with its first, even though season one's average was inflated by a football-boosted premiere. Fox has been adamant about giving these cartoons time to build an audience, and Grimsburg has done at least a little better in 2025 than it did in 2024, so Fox's strategy may be paying off to some degree. It remains a Likely Renewal. Krapopolis has never been a ratings winner, but it has recently shown signs of stability. It continues to regularly match its 9 p.m. lead-in in the more challenging 9:30 slot. With a fourth production cycle yet to air, it is clearly coming back in the 2025-2026 television season.

The series that is in the most danger is The Great North. The fact that Fox made North the 9 p.m. anchor means they no longer see it as a newcomer in need of nurturing, but they also don't see it a legacy show worth including in their mass renewal. Because of this, the series is now Likely to be Canceled. Fox is set to get this one past the 88-episode mark by the end of the season, so they'll soon have the total needed for a traditional syndication deal. From there, its future looks uncertain. For one, its Nielsen ratings are abysmal, with the latest episode scoring a feeble 0.13 in the Adults 18-49 demographic, several ticks below its Family Guy lead-in (0.19). The remainder of its fifth season order does need a place to air, but Fox previously dumped the last batch of Duncanville episodes on Hulu. The same could easily be done with The Great North. It is unlikely that Fox will bring the Tobins back for a sixth season.

Fox Renew/Cancel March Madness continues!

Round 2 voting is officially over for FOX Renew/Cancel March Madness. Animal Control put up a good fight, but it was no match for Alert: Missing Persons Unit, which will now advance to the semifinals. Doc clobbered Grimsburg in the first round, but it lagged behind 9-1-1: Lone Star this time around. In the match-up of two animated titans, it was Family Guy that slipped ahead of The Simpsons. And Bob's Burgers was simply no match for Rescue HI-Surf.

Four shows remain in this tournament. Make sure to vote for your favorite ones to ensure that they make it to the finals. Polls will close on Saturday, April 12, 2025.

FOX Renew/Cancel 7: Grim Ratings For Grimsburg

Predictions for 02/22/25

Below are the February 22nd renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2024-25 television season. The numbers listed in the table mark the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The "Y2Y (year-to-year) Change" column denotes how much the series has grown or declined when compared to its average from the previous season.

Grimsburg: In its return, Grimsburg posted a 0.14 Adults 18-49 rating, retaining barely half of its Family Guy lead-in. Despite the poor performance, this number is actually higher than eleven of the thirteen episodes that aired in 2024. When looking at the big picture, Fox doesn't really need to keep Grimsburg around. They have their three animated veterans (Simpsons, Bob's, Family Guy), a decent performer in Universal Basic Guys, and two more cartoons (Krapopolis & The Great North) that are much closer to syndication than Grim. And yet, it starts as a Likely Renewal in this column. The fact that Fox bumped it up an hour to give it a Family Guy lead-in means they want it to succeed. If they were fine with its dismal performance last year, they are probably fine with it doing about the same this time around.

Family Guy: On Sunday, NASCAR zoomed into primetime and caused significant delays. Because of this, the season premiere of Family Guy aired at ten instead of eight, but that was probably for the better as Peter Griffin and company returned with a 0.27 rating. The series likely took advantage of its sizable lead-in, as this is its best Adults 18-49 performance since 2023. Though it is possible that airing two hours late canceled out any boost it may have gotten from NASCAR, it's more likely that Family Guy will deal with a sizable decline in week two. For now, the series is Likely to be Renewed. This is the first time in a while that Fox has scheduled the series in a worthy time slot, and it is unlikely that any of the other three in this lineup will be doing any better. A move to Hulu seems to be on the horizon, but Fox needs it on broadcast for now.

Doc: Doc recently jumped to a 0.27 rating, setting a new season high in the process. This drama has come a long way since it posted that dreadful 0.19 on premiere night, and it has only strengthened its case for renewal. Doc began as a shaky Likely Renewal in January, but its live ratings have grown enough that it is now closer to Certain Renewal status.

Animal Control: Speaking of shows rising to new highs, Animal Control jumped to a 0.25 for its latest installment. This is the program's best rating since 2023, meaning it bested every season two episode in this showing. Animal Control appears to be in fine shape and retains its Likely Renewal status.

Going Dutch: Though there was once a time when Going Dutch built on Animal Control, its latest performance shows no such promise. Dutch delivered a mere 0.16 on February 13th, retaining just 64% of Animal Control's audience. A renewal is never completely out of the question for a struggling Fox newcomer, but Dutch has made it clear that it is no Doc. It is still Likely to be Canceled.
