BINGE REPORT: Black Mirror Leads Again As A Surprise Rounds Out The Top 3

The first week of 2018 saw the same shows in the top two spots—Black Mirror at #1 and Vikings at #2–as the last week of 2017. What’s most surprising here is that Friends, which suddenly entered the list at #6, rose three spots this week to #3. Amongst TV Time users, Friends was the top-streamed Broadcast TV show despite having last aired an original episode nearly 14 years ago. It really gets you wondering how a revival would do.

For Netflix, while Black Mirror remained their #1 show, new show The End of the F***ing World should not be underestimated. With a #4 start and nearly 5 episodes streamed by the average viewer, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it remain in the next couple Binge Reports. The news wasn’t as great for Stranger Things, Down three spots to #6, or DARK, down four spots to #9. However, making this list in general is impressive, especially for the former, which has been out for several weeks now.

Three currently-airing broadcast series made the list this week. Grey’s Anatomy was the top one, despite falling a spot to #5, and an average of over 7 episodes per viewer. Clearly there are still people finding and/or well behind on the show. The Big Bang Theory, which returned for this tracking week, was up two spots to #7, and for the second week in a row was not the only multi-cam sitcom on the list. Finally, Lucifer re-entered at #8 now that it’s back in originals. While the Live + Same Day ratings are just modest, it seems there is a significant amount of interest for it on non-linear platforms.

Rounding out the list was recently-ended Pretty Little Liars, which dropped two spots to #10. Still, with over 8 episodes streamed per viewer, this show is shaping up to be a future classic.

Binge Report: Black Mirror Dominates + A Surprising Entry Over The Holidays

This Binge Report follows the famous week between Christmas and New Years Eve where many Americans take time off from work, and needless to say it led to some interesting results. Classic sitcom Friends entered the list at #6, with an average of 10.75 episodes streamed per viewer. It’s insane to see how popular this show is nearly 14 years after its series finale, and raises questions about how a revival would do. The new season of Netflix’s Black Mirror premiered at the top spot with an average of 3.46 episodes per viewer. While this could just be my perception, it seems like the show is at its peak in popularity right now. Even the second season of Stranger Things, which has been out for several weeks now, rose up three spots to #3.

On the broadcast TV side of things, Grey’s Anatomy managed to rise four spots to #4 despite increased competition and the fact that it’s been several weeks since the most recent episode aired. It appeared that the long-running medical drama is still gaining new fans at a significant rate. This week wasn’t as kind to other currently-airing broadcast shows; Riverdale tumbled down to #7 after spending the pre-holiday week at #1, and it was The CW’s only entry on the chart. The Big Bang Theory was down five spots to #9, and other typical broadcast entries like Lucifer were missing entirely. Similarly bad news came for AMC’s The Walking Dead, which fell eight spots to #10. 

An impressive entry to this list is Pretty Little Liars, which aired its final episode in June 2017. Not only was it the 8th most streamed show amongst TV Time users, but it also averages over 8 episodes per viewer, which is much higher than the typical 1-4 episodes expected on a different Binge Report. Time will tell if this is a sign that Pretty Little Liars will enjoy a successful TV afterlife, but so far its prospects are good. 

Other, more typical findings on this week’s Binge Report are Netflix’s DARK and The History Channel’s Vikings, which respectively saw two and one spot jumps.

Binge Report: Marvel Beats Stranger Things, No Top 3 Shows For Broadcast

After a month at the top, the second season of Netflix's Stranger Things is no longer the #1 show as reported by TV Time. Instead, new Netflix entry Marvel's The Punisher lands in the top spot, with an impressive 5.39 episodes per viewer. Clearly, they liked what they were seeing, as that's about 5 hours of one show. It's impressive to see that Netflix is dominating the top two spots on this list, with Stranger Things down barely more than 3% from last week in share of streams, demonstrating its longevity.

While The Walking Dead's linear ratings aren't quite what they used to be, it saw nearly a 3% increase in share of streams, putting AMC's signature show at #3 this week, up a spot from last week. Not only does this mean that The Walking Dead still has a lot of ratings power in it, it also means that none of the top three shows this week were on broadcast television.

Luckily for broadcast TV, every other show on this list was from that area of television. ABC had two shows: TGIT's anchor Grey's Anatomy, down two spots to #4, and How to Get Away with Murder, down three spots to #10. It's interesting to see Scandal missing from this list yet again. Could it actually be the least popular of the three TGIT shows? It'll also be interesting to see if it enters more towards the end of the season/series. Both Grey's and HTGAWM were down slightly in shares, but Grey's is almost a lock to make it onto next week's Binge Report and there's a chance HTGAWM stays as well, though given the two shows did not air new episodes last week could work against them.

The CW saw good news with The Flash up three spots to #5 and Arrow up three spots to #6. This could have possibly been in anticipation of the then-upcoming crossover episode. However, the strong gains for these shows led Riverdale to drop four spots to #7. It's still proven to have staying power in streaming, and only adds on to the accomplishment of stronger linear ratings this season.

CBS's sole entry on this list was its signature multi-cam sitcom, The Big Bang Theory. I say this every week, but it's really impressive how a multi-cam sitcom can make it onto a list otherwise filled by serialized dramas. The show is really firing on all cylinders, so to speak. It is down two spots to #8 this week, but that's still impressive.

FOX's Lucifer is now up a spot to #9, once again being their only show on this list, including The Gifted. Its Live + Same Day ratings are decent, nothing more and nothing less, but it's remarkable to see it doing so well on streaming week in and week out.

Binge Report: Stranger Things Keeps the Top Spot

Not everyone has seen the new season of Stranger Things yet; in fact, it stayed steady at #1 this week. Perhaps this season will be even more popular than the one before it if this keeps up. Otherwise, this week was largely dominated by non-streaming-exclusive shows. One cable show made the list--The Walking Dead at #4--but other than that broadcast ruled.

In fact, the second season of The CW's Riverdale did even better on this list than The Walking Dead, staying steady at an impressive #3. The show has certainly become a ratings success this season, both linear and non-linear. Of course, it was far from the only CW show on the list. The Flash was down a spot to #6, Arrow steady at #8, and Supernatural made an entry at #10. With four shows on the chart, it has just as many as the rest of the broadcast networks combined. This demonstrates that there is a large streaming audience for the shows on The CW, and even if they aren't all first-run ratings smashes, there is still an audience for them.

Scandal continues to be the least-streamed TGIT show by TV Time users, as it was the only show of the trio to not make this list. Grey's Anatomy is showing it still has power in its 14th season, steady at the #2 spot. Also, despite declining linear ratings, How to Get Away with Murder is still on this list, down a spot to #7. It's interesting once again to note how Scandal didn't make the list, even though in first-run ratings it's more popular than How to Get Away with Murder, and actually a lot of shows on this list.

Also on the list was FOX's Lucifer, steady at #9. The show is a solid ratings performer on Monday nights and apparently also has a decent streaming following. It's interesting to see how it performs around the same as The Gifted and The Orville, but beats them amongst TV Time users in streaming, as well as the rest of FOX. Finally, CBS saw The Big Bang Theory rise from #7 to #5. The fact that a sitcom is on a list dominated by serialized dramas is a huge accomplishment of itself, never mind the fact that it made the top half of the list.

Binge Report: Week of October 30

It probably shouldn't be too much of a surprise that the 2nd season of Stranger Things tops this list; the show is seemingly a cultural phenomenon that many have been anticipating for months. What is a little surprising is Grey's Anatomy's rebound to #2. With Live + Same Day ratings a bit lower now than they were a few weeks ago, maybe some viewers have simply converted to streaming; it's part of the reason why linear ratings keep slipping after all. At #3 is Riverdale, which continues to have an impressive second season on both linear and streaming platforms. Whether it stays that way or not remains to be seen, but it seems like it'll be able to spend at least the first half of the season on this list, which is truly impressive.

The Walking Dead recently returned, so it shouldn't be too surprising that it is on this list. What is surprising to me is how it's not as high up as lower-rated shows like Grey's Anatomy or Riverdale. Still, #4 isn't something to complain about. Right behind it is The CW's flagship superhero show, The Flash, up a spot from last week. Like Riverdale, it looks like this one is here to stay. Good news as well for How to Get Away with Murder, up to #6 this week and proving to be more popular amongst TV Time streaming viewers than the higher-rated Scandal, its lead-in on linear TV. While its linear ratings have been just OK this season, this shows that it still has a solid audience.

The top (and only) comedy on this list is TV's #1 comedy, The Big Bang Theory, which fell two spots to #7. The good news for it was it was on the higher side in terms of how many episodes each viewer watched. While many multi-cam comedies are considered to be casual watches that many won't pursue on streaming, that certainly is not the case for The Big Bang Theory.

Arrow is steady at #8 this week, the third CW show on this list; in fact, it has more shows on this list than any other network or streaming platform. This shows that while The CW may not have the highest Live + Same Day ratings, the audience many of the shows they air may not pursue shows the day they air. However, that does not necessarily mean the shows aren't profitable, as this list implies.

At #9 is Lucifer, steady with last week. It is FOX's only show on the list, which can be seen as surprising given how popular shows like Empire are. Like How to Get Away with Murder, linear ratings are more mediocre than good, but making this streaming list is very impressive and should make it a lock for renewal.

Finally, #10 is American Horror Story, which airs on FOX-owned cable network FX and hails from super-producer Ryan Murphy. This anthology is many seasons into its life and still going strong.
