’Almost Family’ Canceled After One Season

No more new episodes will be produced on the Fox network.

Fox has pulled the plug on freshman drama Almost Family after just a single season. The series wrapped up its 13-episode run on February 22, 2020 with a dismal 0.2 rating in the key 18-49 demographic. Less than a million people watched the final episode. In all, the program averaged an abysmal 0.44 A18-49 rating. Almost Family was based on the television series Sisters and starred Brittany Snow, Emily Osment, Victoria Cartagena, Mo McRae, and Timothy Hutton. The TV Ratings Guide correctly predicted that the drama would not make it to season two.


Earlier today, actor Timothy Hutton (who played Doctor Leon Bechley in the show) was accused of sexual assault by former Canadian model Sera Johnston. While The TV Ratings Guide will not go into further detail about the alleged incident, this added factor may have prompted the Fox network to officially announce their termination of this low-rated program. In addition, the abrupt move from a plush Wednesday slot after The Masked Singer to an undesirable Saturday slot for its final two episodes spelled doom for the series. This marks the first Fox series to receive a cancellation announcement during the 2019-2020 television season. Below are subdemo ratings for the first five episodes it aired.

The series performed best in the Women 25-54 demographic.

FOX Renew/Cancel: The FOX Drama Bubble Race Continues, Almost Family Effectively Canceled

It's a new year for FOX Renew/Cancel, and we have new predictions. A lot has changed since the last installment. Here are this week's predictions.

Last Man Standing: The first two episodes of Last Man Standing premiered at a 1.0, then the next two episodes dropped to a 0.8. Last Man Standing still rakes in as one of the top rated comedies on Fox. As long as it remains steady in the 0.8 range, it should get renewed. Although it's not as certain given that it's now an unowned show. Nonetheless, Last Man Standing fans shouldn't worry too much about the show for now. Last Man Standing is likely to be renewed.

Now for the drama situation with Deputy, Prodigal Son, and The Resident. Deputy joined the 0.7 club along with Prodigal Son and The Resident. All three shows lean renewal at the moment, because ratings are so close between the three shows and they are at the FOX scripted median.

The Moodys: So much for the miniseries designation. A FOX press release had The Moodys waiting for a renewal decision. First of all, that's not likely happening. Second of all, ratings were terrible. The Moodys didn't do any better than the later episodes of Almost Family. The Moodys is likely to be canceled, although I would have had it as a certain cancelation if I were more ruthless.

Almost Family: Speaking of Almost Family, the FOX press release states that Almost Family and Flirty Dancing are pulled from the Wednesday night schedule effective January 22. This means that Almost Family is now effectively canceled. Go figure. The FOX Renew/Cancel chart adds the "effectively canceled" designation in light of the news, instead of just plain "canceled".

FOX Renew/Cancel: The Resident is Likely to be Canceled, Ownership Definitely Won’t Save Almost Family

Welcome to the FOX Renew/Cancel column, and for the most part, some changes are coming to the prediction table. Here are this week's predictions!

The Resident: Honestly, I'm torn about The Resident's chances for renewal. On the one hand, The Resident is doing fine, and a 0.7 is borderline and somewhat solid ratings for FOX. However, FOX does not own the show, Disney does through 20th Television. That alone makes it a negative indicator for renewal. It's likely to be canceled, but I'm not going to write it off completely for a renewal. I'll wait and see how the midseason dramas fare.

Almost Family: With the midseason dramas, the same cannot be said about Almost Family. Although FOX has a co-ownership stake with Disney on the show, a reality show and three other dramas are waiting in the bench. Ownership is definitely not going to save Almost Family, especially since FOX did not order any more episodes of the show. There's a small chance The Resident may make it to next year, but there is no chance Almost Family will. It's still certain to be canceled.

FOX Renew/Cancel: Almost Family is Still Certain to be Canceled, While Animated Shows are Certain to be Renewed

Welcome to the FOX Renew/Cancel columns, where scripted show fates are predicted whether they are renewed or canceled. I took a week off last week due to the World Series, and I am back to predicting this week. This week, two shows got upgraded, while one show's prediction despite getting capped is getting more obvious. Thank the search engine optimization folks! Here is the updated table.

Almost Family: As it becomes even more blatantly obvious that Almost Family is certain to be canceled, FOX announced that it won't be ordering any more episodes by announcing the midseason schedule. Almost Family was nowhere to be found on the schedule. So it will be finishing its initial order before February rolls around. This should come as no surprise for the lowest rated rookie on FOX with many sites already calling it canceled. We may need to order the defacto canceled category soon.

Bob's Burgers and Family Guy: While some may say that both shows are defacto renewed, these shows have not officially been announced as renewed yet. With the renewal of Bless the Harts, and the ramping up of animation, I don't expect Bob's Burgers or Family Guy to get canceled any time soon. With the lower renewal bar, both shows easily clear that. Family Guy and Bob's Burgers earn an upgrade to certain to be renewed.

FOX Renew/Cancel: Another Week, Another Almost Family is Certain to be Canceled Headline

Since last week, there has been virtually no changes to the prediction table for the FOX scripted lineup. Here are this week's predictions.

Almost Family: Another week goes by and it is becoming more glaringly obvious that Almost Family is certain to be canceled. Never mind that it is the only show that FOX has any stake for ownership, even though all new shows are 50-50 coproductions with the studio that produces the shows. Just by the strength of its Masked Singer lead-in compared to 9-1-1's strength with Prodigal Son, Almost Family is the weaker show. But at least it is steady compared to Prodigal Son, I'd give it that. But when push comes to shove, a 0.7 out of a 2.0 just can't be good for FOX's bottom line. And the fact that there has been no news on episode cuts or extensions, the news is getting more bad by the moment.

Bless the Harts: Bless the Harts showed that it was the weakest link in the lineup this week when it scored a 0.6, which makes it the lowest rated animated show this week. It's not even proving its case for a renewal in any sense right now. However, the lineup as a whole is averaging fractional without football. So it may be the case it would be the pity renewal. But it's not getting a backorder due to production timelines. Two other animated shows are coming midseason as well. Many people say that it could have a shot at renewal especially if a show in development that is ordered to series is not ready for fall. I'm not buying this. Considering the number of animated shows in development, which is a lot, FOX may not need Bless the Harts in order to continue Animation Domination. Bless the Harts still leans cancelation, just on that regard.

Prodigal Son: Prodigal Son dropped to a 0.8 after 9-1-1 dropped to a 1.4. That indicates that the show is nowhere close to stabilizing. But it is still stronger than Almost Family. FOX already gave the show a full season, which signals great confidence in the show. As of right now, I would not panic just yet. We may evaluate the show further come midseason, but it is still likely to be renewed.
