Wisdom of the Crowd Officially Canceled

To the surprise of no one, Wisdom of the Crowd has been officially canceled. The ill-fated show was presumed dead by all after it failed to recieve a backorder. Wisdom of the Crowd was poorly-rated with just a 0.91 average behind a lead-in that averaged 1.7. It also had to deal with sexual misconduct allegations surrounding star Jeremy Piven, and it seems pretty obvious why CBS would like to distance itself from the show. Monica Potter and Natalia Tena also appeared as series regulars.

CBS Renew/Cancel: ‘Criminal Minds’ Could Go Either Way

CRIMINAL MINDS v. SEAL TEAM Criminal Minds is old, expensive, and only partly owned. Its ratings are just OK in the 10pm slot, and it's part of a disappointing 9-11 block on Wednesdays. It's currently down about 27% year-to-year, a relatively sharp decline that is due in part to its move from 9 to 10. Comparatively, SEAL Team is newer, less expensive, and 100% owned by CBS. The ratings for SEAL aren't strong for its slot and are less impressive than what S.W.A.T. has managed on Thursdays at 10, but it's still one of CBS's top dramas. Both of the Wednesday dramas could feasibly be renewed or cancelled this year, and they're not necessarily in competition, but I get the feeling that Wednesdays will need a shake-up. I'm more skeptical about Criminal Minds at this point and have decided to place it on the bubble. As always, its fate relies on negotiations between CBS and ABC Studios, which is always a risky place to be in. Cast members have come and gone in recent years, so overall costs and cast talks could be what brings the iconic procedural to an end this year after several spinoffs failed to carry on the legacy. CBS has benefitted from a long relationship with Criminal Minds, but they might now be in a place to prioritize their new blood and younger series with syndication prospects. SEAL Team remains likely to be renewed for now. The surprise success of the upcoming new drama Instinct could affect SEAL Team's fate going forward.
SCORPION Yes, it's CBS's second lowest-rated series on the air right now. No, it doesn't have a syndication deal at the moment. However, the Eye Network is never to be counted out when it comes to its ability to sell procedurals into syndication. Madam Secretary and NCIS: New Orleans recently solidified deals that will keep them on the air, which gives hope to Scorpion from the same 2014 class. While Person of Interest already had a syndication deal when its final season was announced, I can see Scorpion getting similar treatment with a benched 13-episode fifth season, which would give CBS more time to sell it and add episodes to the package. They could also renew it for a 22-episode fifth season and still bench it, similar to Elementary at present. Realistically, CBS does not bring it back to the fall schedule with its current ratings. However, if they can find midseason slots for shows like Elementary and Code Black with varied episode counts, it seems plausible that Scorpion can continue in some fashion while its afterlife opportunities are looked at. It seems unlikely for CBS to just drop the show completely after four seasons, when there isn't a recent precedent for that. As such, it's still likely to be renewed.

CBS Renew/Cancel: ‘S.W.A.T.’ Likely to be Renewed

S.W.A.T. The new drama has averaged just over a 1.0 across eight airings. That's rather impressive when compared directly to CBS's other new dramas. Specifically, this looks rather good against SEAL Team, which airs an hour earlier on Wednesdays, has one of the network's biggest lead-ins, and has only done marginally better despite the help. Of course, Wisdom of the Crowd has turned less than favorable results on Sundays and was not given a full season's confidence by CBS. This leaves S.W.A.T. and SEAL Team in serious contention for renewal, and as it stands now they both seem viable. Compared to past Thursday at 10 occupants, the show is a notable improvement over Pure Genius,, Training Day, and Rush Hour. I've upgraded S.W.A.T. to Likely to be Renewed status due to its stability, good 10pm numbers and improvement of the time slot, and CBS's full season order.

Mom, Young Sheldon, Life In Pieces  CBS may have some trouble with its comedy line-up on Monday, but Thursdays are looking relatively strong so far. The Big Bang Theory finally has a lead-out that is holding its own for more than an episode or two. It's obvious that the network wants to groom Young Sheldon to replace the hole left behind by The Big Bang Theory when it leaves the air in the near future, and the ratings have shown that audiences have given the spinoff solid consideration so far. Mom is actually up 8 percent from last year at this point, thanks to Sheldon, and is holding well in the 9pm hour. It realistically won't face much trouble until the end of its presumptive sixth season, which is when Mike & Molly and 2 Broke Girls were both let go. Life In Pieces is doing about as well as it can at 9:30 and benefits from being in its third year. It's doing better than three of the four Monday comedies, so it should be totally safe this year.  Man with a Plan
It was only a matter of time before the Matt LeBlanc comedy joined the Monday block once more, and the call came after Me, Myself & I and 9JKL failed to take off. With the former pulled from the schedule and effectively cancelled, and the latter expected to ride out its 16-episode order quietly, CBS is probably looking to keep this one around. It produced 22 episodes in its first season, which gives it an advantage over Superior Donuts' 13. Out of the four Monday comedies, my bet is on Man with a Plan being the second strongest asset in CBS's eyes, and if they keep more than Kevin Can Wait after this year, I expect Man to join it.

Superior Donuts
Donuts is one show that is heavily toeing the line between the bubble and likely renewal. It's doing fine for the 9:00 hour, down slightly from what Kevin was doing a few weeks ago but on a night without the inflation of The Big Bang Theory. It's stronger than its lead-out, but it becomes a question of how much CBS wants to keep going into next season. It's a little early to say, so I'm keeping my eye on it. The network didn't cancel much last season and gave this little show a chance to improve in a fall position, so I'd say it's hopeful to cross the line into renewal territory in the future. Wisdom of the Crowd The freshman tech/cop drama has been effectively cancelled by CBS and is reflected as such in the table. This was a correct prediction.

CBS's new Sunday drama will not air past its 13th episode. Between low ratings despite a nice time-slot and growing sexual abuse allegations against the lead, this comes as not much of a surprise and is a correct prediction for TVRG. You can view its ratings by clicking here.
