Off Script Season 1 Episode 3: Night Shoots

OFF SCRIPT

Season 1, Episode 3: "Night Shoots"

INT. SOUNDSTAGE 7 - 2:13 AM

The set is barely functioning.

Crew members move like zombies. Empty coffee cups everywhere. Someone is asleep on an apple box.

Harry walks onto set wearing the same hoodie from earlier. Maya hands him a call sheet.

MAYA: Morning.

Harry looks around.

HARRY: It’s two in the morning.

MAYA: Yeah. It’s our morning.

Harry accepts it.

Across set, Aaron sits alone listening to dramatic orchestral music in headphones.

Zoey sleeps face-down on a stack of scripts.

A fog machine randomly starts going off.

Nobody reacts.

Harry walks over to craft services.

Opens a coffee container.

Empty.

He closes it slowly.

HARRY: Okay. What could go wrong?

TITLE CARD: OFF SCRIPT

INT. TALKING HEAD ROOM – NIGHT - MAYA

MAYA: Night shoots break people. Around three in the morning everybody gets emotional. Around four, somebody usually starts crying near lighting.

INT. SOUNDSTAGE - NIGHT

Harry walks through the dark mansion set checking the setup. The atmosphere actually looks incredible tonight.

Tegan enters in costume holding tea. She looks exhausted.

TEGAN: How long have you been awake?

HARRY: I took a nap earlier.

TEGAN: When?

HARRY: Like… nine hours ago.

She nods.

TEGAN: You should’ve rested better before a night shoot.

Harry notices she’s shivering slightly.

HARRY: You cold?

TEGAN: No. (a beat) Yes.

HARRY: You can go ask the costume department for a jacket if you want.

TEGAN: I might do that. Thanks

Tegan leaves.

INT. MAIN HALLWAY SET - LATER

The crew prepares a complicated tracking shot. Harry explains the scene to camera operators.

Aaron approaches.

AARON: Hey.

HARRY: Hey.

AARON: I was thinking about the scene.

Harry braces himself slightly.

AARON: Not changing anything.

Harry relaxes.

AARON: Just… my character hasn’t slept in like thirty hours at this point, right?

HARRY: Probably.

AARON: Cool. So I haven’t slept either.

Harry stares.

HARRY: Aaron…

AARON: It’s helping.

Harry looks around. Aaron genuinely looks terrible.

HARRY: You need to sleep.

AARON: The character doesn’t.

Harry opens his mouth. Closes it.

HARRY: Get through tonight and then please stop respecting the craft this much.

Aaron nods seriously.

INT. TALKING HEAD ROOM - AARON

Aaron looks awful.

AARON: People joke about method acting, but fear changes your body. You can’t fake exhaustion. I’m seeing things a little now but it’s fine.

INT. SOUNDSTAGE - LATER

Harry sits at monitor reviewing rehearsal. Zoey drops into the chair beside him holding terrible vending machine chips. She offers him one. He takes it.

HARRY: Why are they sweet?

ZOEY: I don’t know. Everything here tastes weird.

They watch rehearsal quietly. Onscreen, Aaron walks through the hallway looking genuinely haunted.

ZOEY: Okay, unfortunately that’s working.

HARRY: Yeah.

ZOEY: Still psychotic though. He needs a rest.

Harry laughs quietly. Then notices Zoey drifting asleep sitting upright.

HARRY: You also seem to need a rest.

ZOEY: Can’t. I got to do some rewrites after this.

HARRY: Why?

ZOEY: Maxwell wants “more mythology” added to the script.

Harry groans.

HARRY: What does that even mean?

ZOEY: No clue. I assume he wants more connections to the previous movies.

They focus on the rehearsal.

INT. SOUNDSTAGE - LATER

The tracking shot setup is taking forever. Crew tensions rise. Kara enters somehow looking perfectly awake.

KARA: Good news.

Nobody believes her.

KARA: The mask discourse online shifted positive.

Harry barely looks up.

HARRY: Great.

KARA: People think it “feels true to the franchise.”

HARRY: That’s good to know.

KARA: Exactly. They love it now.

She walks off.

Harry watches crew adjustments. Everything’s slowing down. People are exhausted. A light suddenly blows overhead with a loud POP.

Everyone jumps. Silence.

Then from somewhere:

CLAY (O.S.): I think my burrito flashed white.

INT. HOLDING AREA - LATER

Tegan sits alone trying to rehearse. She keeps messing up lines. Clearly frustrated. Harry enters quietly.

HARRY: You okay?

TEGAN: No.

She drops script into her lap.

TEGAN: I can’t tell if I’m bad or tired anymore.

Harry sits beside her.

HARRY: You’re tired.

TEGAN: Ugh, I hate night shoots.

Harry thinks about that seriously for a second.

HARRY: You’re doing great.

That gets a laugh out of her.

TEGAN: Do you ever feel weird that everybody here’s is just faking it all the time?

Harry looks at her.

TEGAN: Like Aaron’s pretending to be intense. Maxwell’s pretending this movie will matter at all. Kara’s pretending everything’s under control.

Harry nods slowly.

HARRY: Yeah. I think filmmaking’s mostly pretending until something real accidentally happens and people can’t just fake it anymore.

INT. TALKING HEAD ROOM - TEGAN

TEGAN: I thought movie sets would feel glamorous. Mostly it feels like summer camp for insomniacs.

INT. MAIN SET - 4:52 AM

They’re finally ready to shoot. Harry gets everyone focused.

Aaron takes position. He looks horrifying now. Actually horrifying.

Zoey notices too.

ZOEY: Jesus.

HARRY: Yeah.

HARRY: Aaron, you good?

Aaron nods too fast.

AARON: Perfect.

Then immediately walks into the wrong doorway.

INT. MAIN HALLWAY SET - CONTINUOUS

Harry pulls Aaron aside quietly. Concerned.

HARRY: You need a break.

AARON: I’m fine.

HARRY: You’re not though.

Aaron rubs his eyes.

AARON: I just really need this to go well. Everybody thinks I’m a joke already.

Harry softens.

HARRY: Nobody here thinks that.

Aaron looks around set.

AARON: Zoey definitely thinks that.

Across room, Zoey avoids eye contact immediately. Harry notices.

HARRY: Okay, maybe not nobody.

Aaron laughs tiredly.

HARRY: Despite everything, everyone knows you care.

INT. SOUNDSTAGE - LATER

They finally roll cameras. The scene begins. And honestly? It’s great.

The exhaustion actually helps. The set feels eerie. Everybody feels fragile.

Tegan nails the scene. Aaron too.

Harry watches monitor. Even Zoey looks impressed.

HARRY: Cut.

Silence.

Crew members slowly start clapping.

Aaron smiles for maybe the first genuine time. Then immediately falls asleep standing upright.

He collapses gently into a wall.

Everyone freezes. Aaron wakes up instantly.

AARON: I’m okay. Did we get it?

INT. SOUNDSTAGE - SUNRISE

Crew wraps as sunlight starts bleeding through stage doors.

Everyone looks destroyed.

Zoey sits beside Harry on the mansion stairs again.

Same spot as Episode 1. No energy left.

They watch exhausted crew dragging equipment away.

ZOEY: You know the worst part of this mess of a night shoot?

HARRY: What?

ZOEY: That was probably the best scene yet.

Harry smiles tiredly.

HARRY: Yeah.

ZOEY: I’m proud of you for pulling it off.

Harry looks at her.

HARRY: I’m proud of the cast. They brought their A-game tonight.

Zoey stands slowly.

ZOEY: Get some sleep, Harry.

She walks away.

Harry watches the set quietly. Then looks directly into documentary camera. Long exhausted stare.

HARRY: Morning, everyone.
