STORMERE
Season 2, Episode 4: "Homecoming"
EXT.
WILLOWFORD – MORNING
The town is
awake.
Clean
streets. Fresh-painted shutters. Neatly swept porches. Workers moving with
purpose, but never too fast. Conversations kept low. Smiles that don’t quite
reach the eyes.
And above it
all, at the center of the square:
The statue
of NOX.
Watching.
SOREN, LYRA,
ARIADNE, and RONIN walk through the main road.
No one stops
them.
But everyone
notices.
People look.
Then look away too quickly.
Soren takes
it all in without a word.
Ronin
glances toward the blacksmith’s lane.
RONIN: Home sweet home.
Lyra keeps
staring at the statue.
LYRA: This place gives me the creeps.
Ariadne
studies the townspeople.
ARIADNE: So… this is your home, Soren?
Soren
finally speaks.
SOREN: No. This isn’t home. Not anymore.
They keep
walking.
SMASH TO TITLE: STORMFALL
EXT.
WILLOWFORD SQUARE – CONTINUOUS
A few
villagers quietly tend to market stalls. Fruit arranged too neatly. Bread
stacked too evenly.
A TOWN CLERK
sits at a table with ledgers and stamped papers. A line of people waits
patiently to receive small parchment slips.
Ronin slows.
RONIN: That wasn’t there before.
A MAN ahead
of them receives a slip, nods, and moves on without complaint.
Lyra
watches.
LYRA: What is this?
The clerk
looks up. Immediately recognizes them.
His
expression shifts, surprise, fear, then forced politeness.
CLERK: Travel records. Work assignments. Ration certifications.
A beat.
CLERK (CONT’D): Welcome back to Willowford.
Soren steps
closer.
SOREN: Who asked for this?
The clerk
glances nervously toward the statue.
CLERK: No one asked. It was decreed.
Soren stares
at him.
SOREN: By who?
The clerk
does not answer.
He doesn’t
need to.
Ronin places
a hand lightly on Soren’s shoulder.
RONIN: Not here. That’s a problem for another day.
Soren steps
back.
They move on.
EXT.
BLACKSMITH LANE – LATER
Ronin leads
them toward a forge near the edge of town.
The sign
still reads:
THORNE
& IRONWORKS
Soren stops
cold.
The forge is
cleaner than before. Expanded. More organized. New storage racks. A shipment
cart beside the entrance with crimson seals stamped onto every crate.
Ronin
notices Soren looking.
RONIN: I’ve been keeping it running. I hope you don’t mind.
Soren says
nothing.
He just
stares at the family name above the door.
Hunter’s
sword hangs at his side.
Heavy.
Ronin opens
the door.
RONIN (CONT’D): Come on. Get inside before half the town keeps pretending
not to stare at you.
INT. THORNE
& IRONWORKS’S FORGE – DAY
Warm light.
The familiar scent of coal and iron.
For the
first time in a while, this feels like home.
Tools hang
on the walls. Half-finished horseshoes. A forge still burning. A workbench
covered in metal filings.
Lyra
exhales.
LYRA: Okay. This… feels very you, Soren. And it feels like him, too.
Ronin almost
smiles.
RONIN: That’s because it is. We’ve spent most of our childhood inside this
forge.
Ariadne
moves to the window, glancing out toward the road.
Soren walks
deeper into the forge.
Runs a hand
along the workbench.
Dustless.
Maintained.
Alive.
SOREN: You kept it like this?
RONIN: Someone had to.
A beat.
RONIN (CONT’D): Your brother would’ve killed me if I let the place rot.
Soren’s
expression shifts for the briefest second.
Then shuts
again.
LYRA: Where are we sleeping?
RONIN: There’s some space upstairs. It’s not pretty, but it works.
Ariadne
turns back from the window.
ARIADNE: And the town? Has it always been like this since…?
Ronin’s tone
darkens slightly.
RONIN: Since the world changed? Yeah. At first, people were relieved. No
fighting. No hunger. No raids. Then came the records, the schedules, the
wardens… and everyone started learning how to stay quiet.
Lyra crosses
her arms.
LYRA: That sounds miserable.
Ronin
shrugs.
RONIN: Miserable is a kind word for it.
Soren looks
toward the forge door.
SOREN: I’m going home.
Ronin nods
slowly.
RONIN: You want company?
SOREN: No. Thank you… but no.
Lyra steps
forward.
LYRA: Soren…
SOREN: I said no.
He leaves.
The forge
door slams shut behind him.
Silence.
Ariadne
looks to Lyra.
ARIADNE: He shouldn’t be alone.
Ronin
exhales.
RONIN: Right now, he won’t let himself be anything else.
EXT.
ORCHARD ROAD – AFTERNOON
Rows of
apple trees sway in the wind.
The road is
quiet.
Soren walks
alone toward his house.
Each step
slower than the last.
He reaches
the gate.
Stops.
The house
stands where it always did.
Unchanged.
INT. THORNE’S
HOUSE – CONTINUOUS
Stillness.
The same
table. The same chairs. The same cold hearth.
Soren enters
like he’s stepping into a grave.
He walks to
the mantel.
His eyes
flick across the room.
Then to the
kitchen shelf.
A mug.
Hunter’s
mug.
Still there.
Soren picks
it up.
Turns it in
his hands.
A crack in
the side. One he remembers making years ago.
He almost
smiles.
Then he sets
it down too hard.
It shatters.
The sound
cuts through the silence.
Soren stares
at the broken pieces.
Breathing
heavier now.
He kneels to
gather them.
Cuts his
hand.
Doesn’t
react.
Just keeps
collecting the pieces.
EXT.
WILLOWFORD SQUARE – SAME TIME
Lyra and
Ariadne walk through the square while Ronin speaks with a merchant nearby.
The town
moves around them in carefully measured rhythm.
A bell rings
once.
Immediately,
half the square shifts direction.
Workers
moving to new stations. Children gathered by teachers. Market stalls closing in
unison.
Lyra
watches, unsettled.
LYRA: Do they do everything on command now?
A WOMAN
passing by hears her. Lowers her head.
WOMAN: That’s better than the alternative.
She keeps
walking.
Ariadne
watches her go.
ARIADNE: This is so wrong.
Lyra’s eyes
land on a small notice board beside the square.
Pinned
schedules. Approved labor zones. Curfews. Reporting hours.
And one
chilling header:
PUBLIC
HARMONY DIRECTIVES
Lyra rips
one down.
Ariadne
grabs her wrist.
ARIADNE: Don’t. We don’t want to get these people in trouble.
Lyra looks
around.
Several
townspeople saw.
None react.
She slowly
lets the paper go.
INT. THORNE
& IRONWORKS’S FORGE – LATER
Ronin
hammers metal at the anvil.
Sparks rise.
Lyra sits at
the workbench, restless. Ariadne stands nearby, flipping through an old
notebook she found among the shelves.
LYRA: I hate this place.
RONIN: No, you don’t.
Lyra looks
up.
RONIN (CONT’D): You hate that this place makes you think of him.
A beat.
Lyra leans
back.
LYRA: What’s the difference?
Ronin sets
the hammer down.
RONIN: A big one.
Ariadne
looks up from the notebook.
ARIADNE: There have been magical disturbances outside town too. On the road. In
the river.
Ronin
frowns.
RONIN: I’ve heard things.
Lyra turns.
LYRA: What things?
Ronin wipes
his hands on a cloth.
RONIN: Livestock acting strange. Wells turning warm overnight. Lights under the
fields. People saying the ground hums if you stand still long enough.
Ariadne
absorbs every word.
ARIADNE: It’s spreading.
Lyra glances
toward the door.
Toward where
Soren went.
LYRA: Great. So the world is about to implode and Soren’s losing it.
Ronin says
nothing.
Because
she’s right.
EXT. THORNE’S
HOUSE – SUNSET
The sky
burns gold and red.
Soren sits
on the porch steps.
Broken mug
pieces beside him.
A bandage
wrapped around his hand. Poorly.
Ronin
approaches from the road, carrying two bottles.
He sits
beside Soren without asking.
Offers one.
Soren takes
it.
A long
silence.
Then…
RONIN: You know, when I first came through this place, your brother almost
threw me out for trying to “improve” the forge setup.
A tiny huff
from Soren.
Not a laugh.
Close.
RONIN (CONT’D): Said if I moved one more tool without permission, he’d break
my hand.
Soren stares
ahead.
SOREN: Sounds like him.
A beat.
RONIN: You wanna talk about it?
SOREN: No.
Ronin nods.
Drinks.
RONIN: Fair enough.
More
silence.
SOREN: I broke his mug.
Ronin
glances at the shattered pieces.
Soren’s jaw
tightens.
SOREN: I came back here thinking maybe… I don’t know. Maybe something would
feel the same.
He grips the
bottle tighter.
SOREN (CONT’D): But it doesn’t.
Ronin
watches the road ahead.
RONIN: That’s because it isn’t.
Soren looks
at him.
Ronin’s
voice stays calm.
RONIN (CONT’D): You knew coming home wouldn’t bring him back.
SOREN: He didn’t deserve this.
Soren looks
away.
SOREN: I want my brother back.
That one
sits between them.
Raw.
Ronin
doesn’t soften it.
He doesn’t
try.
RONIN: Me too, Soren. Me too.
Silence
again.
The sun
lowers.
EXT.
WILLOWFORD SQUARE – NIGHT
Lanterns
glow softly around the square.
The statue
of Nox looms in the dark.
A small
gathering of townspeople stands before it. Quiet. Still.
Not worship.
Not exactly.
Just
attendance.
A local
OFFICIAL reads from a parchment.
OFFICIAL: Curfew begins at the second bell. Assigned production resumes at first
light. Harmony inspections will continue through the week.
The crowd
listens without expression.
Soren, Lyra,
Ariadne, and Ronin stand at the edge of the square, watching.
LYRA: Please tell me this isn’t normal.
RONIN: It is now. I haven’t experienced much of this. I was away, remember?
The official
continues.
OFFICIAL: Any unauthorized movement beyond designated roads must be reported. Any
unusual magical phenomena must be submitted to the district office immediately.
That catches
Ariadne’s attention.
ARIADNE: They know.
Ronin nods
faintly.
The official
rolls up the parchment.
OFFICIAL: Order protects us. Obedience preserves us.
The crowd
repeats it.
Flatly.
Like prayer
without faith.
CROWD: Order protects us. Obedience preserves us.
Soren’s face
hardens.
He looks at
the statue.
At the
people.
At the town
he grew up in.
Something
finally begins to crack beneath the numbness.
Not loudly.
But enough.
Lyra
notices.
LYRA: Soren…
He doesn’t
answer.
The second
bell tolls.
The square
empties immediately.
People
disperse in all directions without a word.
Within
seconds, the square is almost empty.
Only the
statue remains.
Watching.
Ariadne
turns to Ronin.
ARIADNE: These people are trapped.
Ronin keeps
his eyes on the streets.
RONIN: I think we are all trapped.
Soren steps
forward into the empty square.
Stops at the
base of the statue.
Looks up.
Hunter’s
sword in his hand.
Lyra tenses.
LYRA: Soren, don’t…
He doesn’t
swing.
Doesn’t
shout.
He just
stares.
A long beat.
Then…
SOREN: Tomorrow, we start fixing this town.
Lyra and
Ariadne exchange a look.
Ronin
watches him carefully.
There’s
purpose in Soren now.
But it isn’t
peace.
Not yet.
Above them,
clouds drift slowly over the moon.
The statue
casts a long shadow across the empty square.
And Soren
stands right in the middle of it. Covered in darkness.
CUT TO BLACK.
END OF EPISODE.
