I'm taking a look each week at some of the major categories for the Emmy Awards. With the awards ceremony getting close, we're on to the big three awards. Here's a look at Outstanding Limited/Anthology Series!
OUTSTANDING LIMITED OR ANTHOLOGY SERIES
All Her Fault (Peacock)
The Beast in Me (Netflix)
Beef (Netflix)
DTF St. Louis (HBO)
Love Story: John F. Kennedy & Carolyn Bessette (FX)
I think this is the toughest category to predict of the big three. Drama Series feels pretty locked up and Comedy Series seems like it's down to two. But this one? I could make a case for four of the five nominees. Let's get the one that doesn't have a chance out of the way. All Her Fault broke the Peacock drought at the Emmys but it's not winning. So then let's work the way to the top. I'm not totally discounting The Beast in Me but I just don't think it has enough juice. Yes, it was well-viewed but critics didn't care for the show and I just can't imagine something as "meh" as that could win even in a week year. But it has a chance. Love Story feels like a boom or bust prospect. People feel a certain type of way about Ryan Murphy's empire and it's been a long time since he's had a major awards player. And yes, this show did get in the zeitgeist more than a lot of recent Murphy shows but it was not without controversy and I just don't think it (and he) have enough support but I wouldn't be floored if it wins. DTF St. Louis became a much buzzier show as it continued and could easily win here given how well it did with the acting categories. I do feel like the buzz has faded a bit on the show though and it's such a unique show with a unique tone that might not be for everyone. So that leads me to Beef. Despite some mixed reception to the second season, this is a title that has won in this category before and, like St. Louis, it did very well in the acting categories (except for the notable miss for Cailee Spaeny). It also probably has more love from the below the line folks. So I am going to go with Beef very tentatively while St. Louis is right on its heels.
