Nancy Drew Ending After Four Seasons

The CW programming purge continues, as the network has announced that the midseason-bound fourth season of Nancy Drew will also be its final season. The series has always been a poor performer for The CW, and its days certainly looked numbered when a slew of CW shows were canceled last season. Though it managed to escape the cut, having been party of the mass renewal earlier in the season, the cut made it clear that The CW was no longer going to drag out aging, low-rated veterans for as long as they please anymore. Nancy Drew ranked as The CW's second-lowest-rated in-season scripted program last season with just a 0.05 average, below numerous canceled series. Its streaming performance, however, was what set it apart from that pack, and is what will now allow the show to get a pre-announced ending. The fourth season is currently in production, which should allow the creative team to give the show the closure that many other CW shows did not receive. Kennedy McMann, Leah Lewis, Maddison Jaizani and Scott Wolf star in the series.

Wednesday TV Ratings 4/28/21: President Biden Address Down from 2020 Trump State of the Union, The Goldbergs Slips (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: President Biden's address took over primetime, with ABC's broadcast (0.6) narrowly outperforming NBC's (0.5). Fox (0.4) and CBS (0.4) tied for last place. NBC, ABC, and CBS all posted matching 0.3s for the 10:30pm Republican response by Senator Tim Scott, with Fox absent since it does carry primetime programming after 10. Needless to say, these numbers were markedly down from President Trump's 2020 'State of the Union' address. Only ABC was able to tie 2020's rating, with Fox falling by more than 50% on a year-to-year basis. NBC shed four-tenths while CBS was down by two. 

The 8pm hour was politics-free but the ratings weren't exactly anything to write home about. ABC's 'The Goldbergs' (0.5) inched down to a new low while 'Home Economics' clung to its feeble 0.4 rating. CBS's 'Price Is Right At Night' (0.5) was on-par with the alphabet network, with NBC's repeat of 'Chicago Med' (0.4) close behind. Fox's 'Masked Singer' sing-along/clip show (0.8) was a few tenths lower than a traditional episode but well above the competition. The CW didn't broadcast Biden at all, instead airing steady editions of 'Kung Fu' (0.2) and 'Nancy Drew' (0.1).

Finals Update: 'President Biden Address to Congress' on ABC (+0.1), NBC (+0.1), and CBS (+0.1) and the 'Republican Response' on ABC (+0.1) and CBS (+0.2) adjusted up.

As predicted, the CW pretty much renewed all non-final seasoned current shows on the air, except for Katy Keene. No incorrect predictions were made so far this season. Legends of Tomorrow, In the Dark, and Roswell, New Mexico were also renewed. I didn't give them a prediction simply because they have not premiered new seasons yet. Overall, the current record for the CW is 10-0.

Simply put, the current speculation for renewals has something to do with the potential for a possible writer's strike that would possibly affect next season. Currently, the WGA has been in legal disputes with multiple talent agencies over its Code of Conduct. The current deal with the AMPTP is set to expire on May 1. That's expected to continue through next year.

CW Renew/Cancel: Nancy Drew is Still Likely to be Renewed, Thank the Potential Profits

Welcome to the CW Renew/Cancel column, week 2! The CW is having a bad week, but no changes to the prediction table are coming. Here are this week's predictions.

Nancy Drew is in the headline this week, because it hit a 0.2 in the A18-49 demographic. Guess what, so did All American, Black Lightning, Riverdale, and Legacies. Outside of Supernatural, Arrow, Batwoman, Supergirl, and The Flash, no other CW show went above 0.2 in the key demographic Sunday-Thursday this week. Riverdale, Nancy Drew's lead in, as I mentioned before, hit a 0.2 this week. You can't blame Nancy Drew for not going any higher than that. Plus it's a CBS show. It's more likely to be the next candidate for a move to Friday night than get canceled and it is possible that Friday is lower than Nancy Drew would be this week. CW has bigger fish to fry than Nancy Drew at this point. Also, think of what a stacked season on the CW website can do for its bottom line, plus a summer streaming run on CBS All Access. The potential profits will likely maximize whatever low ratings the show gets. Nancy Drew is still likely to be renewed.

As for the rest of the shows that hit a 0.2, we may reevaluate come November sweeps, but right now, we don't have a clear picture on renewal or cancelation right now, unlike with the rest of the networks. I expect the CW to renew everything on this list that does not have an announced final season, but that could change when midseason comes.

CW Renew/Cancel: All American is Certain to be Renewed, Let’s Thank Netflix and Local Programming

Welcome to the CW Renew/Cancel Watch, and it is week 1 for the CW. Changes are on the horizon, and it's mostly good news for the CW shows. Here's the table for this week.

All American: All American returned to a 0.3 in the A18-49 demo on Monday night after a timeslot change from Wednesday 9pm to Monday 8pm. It even skewed younger than its last season one episodes. The A18-34 rating for All American was also at a 0.3, compared to a 0.1 for the later episodes. This is good news for the show, which likely leads it in the middle of the CW pack. Because the average is now at 0.3, it does not seem bad. Don't expect All American to get canceled any time soon this season. All American is certain to be renewed. You can thank Netflix and local programming for getting it to its current series high.

Batwoman: Starting out as an 8pm show benefitted Batwoman ratings as it started at a 0.5 in the key demo. It was apparently heavily rounded, even as it grew in the half hours. It may likely fall in the ratings in the coming weeks, but I think this is not going to affect the show much. It will start as likely to be renewed.

Nancy Drew: The newest occupant of the Wednesday 9pm timeslot scored a 0.3, after a 0.4 from Riverdale. Historically adjusted, it did better than both Dynasty, Life Sentence, and to a small extent, All American. Considering this is a CBS produced show, the renewal ratings bar is lower than the WB shows. It easily clears that. Nancy Drew is likely to be renewed.

Dynasty: Like I said in the preseason post, Dynasty is in its third season. Regardless of ratings, third season shows get renewed for a fourth season. Dynasty is safe, even if it hits the coveted Blutarsky (0.0) this season. Dynasty is certain to be renewed.

Legacies: The show will have 20 episodes this season, to finish around the same time as Supernatural. It started at essentially the same premiere rating as season 1, which in today's ratings landscape is pretty good. Will it remain steady through the fall? I think it will. Legacies is likely to be renewed.

Charmed: The CW has not canceled a second season Friday bound show since The Carrie Diaries. Charmed is produced by CBS, which essentially makes ratings irrelevant. There's virtually no way Charmed is getting canceled this season, regardless of what Holly Marie Combs tweets about the show. I say, let the anti-fan bashing continue for another season. Charmed is likely to be renewed.
