High Potential, 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville Renewed by ABC

 

A day after the renewal of Abbott Elementary, ABC had picked up additional seasons of three of their drama series. Freshman drama 9-1-1: Nashville has been renewed for a second season, while breakout sophomore drama High Potential has been renewed for a third season, and 9-1-1 will be back for a landmark tenth season - its fourth on ABC. All three series have performed well for ABC, particularly High Potential, which is one of the highest-rated series on all of television in multiplatform ratings, and has been since its debut. It currently boasts an average of 12.7 million viewers and 2.4 in the key 18-49 demo in the MP+7 metric this season, making it the highest-rated series on broadcast TV in the demo and the second most-watched show in total viewers. While 9-1-1 has cooled off this season in all regards, its remains a solid anchor of Thursday nights, with a 0.33 L+SD average this season and a 1.4 rating in the MP+7 metric. 9-1-1: Nashville is the weakest of the renewed trio, with a 1.1 in the MP+7 and a more modest 0.25 L+SD rating, though it has been an improvement on Doctor Odyssey, and is the latest spinoff in an important Disney brand, easing its renewal. Shifting Gears, Will Trent and The Rookie Among Five ABC Scripted Renewals

ABC has handed renewals to five of their current scripted series. Freshman comedy Shifting Gears and veteran series The Rookie, Will Trent, Grey's Anatomy and 9-1-1 have all been renewed for an additional season each, joining the previously-renewed Abbott Elementary and High Potential. Shifting Gears, starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings was their only new comedy this season. Despite a ratings drop as the season went on, it averaged 0.39 in the demo, making it their #2 series. The Rookie has been one of ABC's lowest-rated series in linear ratings, but the Nathan Fillion drama makes up for it in delayed viewing, ranking as one of TV's top shows in the multiplatform metric. Will Trent saw a massive rise in the ratings upon its return, and while ratings have dropped a bit to the levels of its second season, it's up 9% from last season, the best year-to-year trend of any show on television. 9-1-1: Nashville Ordered to Series by ABC

Two seasons into its run on the network, ABC is expanding the 9-1-1 franchise. With its first spinoff ending its run just weeks ago on Fox, 9-1-1 will now launch its first spinoff on ABC, with another southern-set spinoff set in Nashville, Tennessee. It's third Ryan Murphy show in as many seasons to join ABC's lineup, after 9-1-1 premiered in the 2023-24 season and Doctor Odyssey premiered in the 2024-25 season. 9-1-1 is one of the highest-rated series on ABC, narrowly trailing Shifting Gears and Will Trent in the 18-49 season average. No cast has been announced yet for 9-1-1: Nashville, though development of a new 9-1-1 spinoff has long been discussed, with Hawaii named as a potential spinoff before ABC finally settled on Nashville as the settling.

9-1-1 Renewed for Season 8

There's no emergency for 9-1-1 - ABC has renewed the first responder drama for an eighth season, just three episodes into its seventh season. It's the first season of the series to air on ABC, which rescued the series - which is owned by parent company Disney - after it was canceled by Fox. The series currently rates as ABC's #1 scripted series with an excellent 0.56 average, down just 7% from its sixth season average on Fox. 9-1-1 has always been among broadcast's highest-rated shows since its debut, and also boasts a strong streaming performance, with its season seven premiere drawing over 10 million viewers and a 2.26 18-49 demo rating in MP+7 metric, improving on previous time slot occupant Station 19's year-ago performances. 9-1-1 Renewed by Fox

Fox's #1 show has finally been confirmed to return, as the network has renewed 9-1-1 just hours after its spinoff, 9-1-1: Lone Star. 9-1-1 will enter its sixth season. Ryan Murphy's first responder drama has been a top performer for Fox since premiering, but its future remained in doubt following some difficult renewal negotiations between Fox and 20th TV.
