STORMERE
Season 2, Episode 3: "Interlude I: The Age of Nox"
EXT. VERITAS – DAWN
The capital glows beneath a pale, bloodless sunrise.
Its marble towers are spotless. Its streets are full. Its
banners, all crimson, all bearing the sigil of NOX, ripple in perfect
symmetry.
No smoke
rises where it shouldn’t. No merchants shout over one another. No arguments. No
unrest.
Only order.
And silence.
Too much silence.
At the center of the city stands a massive black palace of
polished stone and glass.
The new heart of the world.
SMASH TO TITLE: STORMFALL
INT. THRONE CHAMBER – MORNING
A vast chamber of dark stone and white light.
Tall windows flood the hall with dawn. Crimson banners hang
from pillars like dripping blood.
At the far end, on a throne carved of black crystal: NOX.
Still. Regal. Untouchable.
Below him, rows of ministers, generals, scribes, and wardens
kneel in perfect silence.
At his right
side stands SCARLETT, the Blood Queen, armored in deep red. At
his left, a few steps lower, stands ALERIC.
A counselor reads from a scroll.
COUNSELOR: Grain production in the southern
provinces has exceeded all expectations. Trade between the western ports and
the mountain settlements remains uninterrupted. No signs of rebellion have been
reported this month.
Nox doesn’t react.
The counselor swallows and continues.
COUNSELOR (CONT’D): Crime in Veritas has all but
vanished. Border conflicts have ceased. The new identification system is
functioning without issue.
A long silence.
Then…
NOX: And yet.
The counselor freezes.
NOX (CONT’D): You all speak as if peace is a
number that can be measured.
No one dares respond.
Nox rises.
His cloak falls behind him like shadow made solid.
He descends the steps slowly.
NOX (CONT’D): The roads are clean. The markets are
calm. The kings have bowed. And yet… the world still feels... wrong.
The room stays frozen.
Scarlett watches him closely.
Aleric lowers his eyes.
COUNSELOR: My lord… perhaps what you feel is
simply the weight of what you’ve accomplished.
Nox stops in front of him.
A beat.
NOX: No.
He turns away.
NOX (CONT’D): It’s something else.
EXT. VERITAS – CENTRAL SQUARE – LATER
A grand square of polished stone.
Children sit beside a fountain, reading from crimson-bound
texts. Guards stand at every corner, calm and unmoving.
Nox walks through the square alone.
No escort. No fear.
People kneel as he passes.
Some willingly.
Some because they know they should.
A little girl drops her book.
It lands hard against the stone.
The sound echoes too loudly.
Her mother tenses instantly.
The child bends to retrieve it, trembling.
Nox stops.
Looks at the girl.
Looks at the mother.
Looks around the square.
Everyone is watching.
No one is breathing.
Nox kneels and picks the book up himself.
Hands it back.
NOX: You don’t need to fear, girl.
The girl takes the book with shaking hands.
GIRL: Thank you… my lord.
Nox stands again.
The mother bows so low her forehead nearly touches the stone.
He keeps walking.
His face betrays nothing.
But something in his eyes shifts.
INT. PALACE CORRIDOR – DAY
Long corridors of polished marble.
Scarlett walks beside Nox.
The hall is otherwise empty.
SCARLETT: The square went quiet after you
left.
Nox keeps walking.
NOX: It was already quiet.
SCARLETT: You know what I mean.
A beat.
SCARLETT (CONT’D): They fear disappointing you.
Nox’s expression hardens slightly.
NOX: Good. Fear keeps things from
unraveling.
Scarlett studies him.
SCARLETT: Is that what you wanted? Fear?
Nox stops.
Turns to her.
NOX: I wanted order.
SCARLETT: There’s a difference.
A long silence.
NOX: Is there?
Scarlett doesn’t answer.
He turns and walks on.
INT. PALACE WAR ROOM – AFTERNOON
A massive map of the world covers the floor, etched in silver
and obsidian.
Kingdoms, roads, trade routes, provinces.
All under his sigil.
Nox stands at the center.
Aleric enters quietly behind him.
He says nothing at first.
Just looks at the map.
Then…
ALERIC: You asked for me?
Nox doesn’t turn.
NOX: Did I?
Aleric waits.
Nox finally looks back at him.
NOX (CONT’D): Tell me something, Aleric. Now that
it’s done… now that the world is finally still… are you happy?
The question catches Aleric off guard.
ALERIC: I’m not sure happiness has anything
to do with it.
Nox almost smiles.
Almost.
NOX: A useful answer. Empty. But useful.
Aleric steps closer onto the map.
ALERIC: You built what you said you would
build. There are no wars. No kings fighting for land. No starving villages
burned for someone else’s cause.
Nox turns fully now.
NOX: And yet.
Aleric holds his gaze.
ALERIC: And nothing… It’s the remarkable
world you always envisioned.
Silence.
NOX: Power doesn’t just disappear, Aleric. It moves. It
finds somewhere else to exist.
A beat.
NOX: Now, Aleric… I want you to tell me
everything you know about Ariadne.
EXT. VERITAS – LOWER DISTRICT – LATE AFTERNOON
The lower district is cleaner than it once was.
No filth. No crime. No hunger.
A line of workers collects bread from a public station.
No pushing.
No noise.
An old woman reaches the front. She takes her ration with
both hands and immediately steps aside.
Nox watches from beneath a stone archway.
Scarlett beside him. Aleric a few paces behind.
SCARLETT: Isn’t this what you wanted to prove?
Nox watches the line.
NOX: No one starves.
SCARLETT: No one speaks either. You created a
dictatorship.
Nox says nothing.
A man in the line glances at him too long.
A warden notices and steps toward the man.
Not aggressive.
Worse.
Controlled.
WARDEN: Eyes down.
The man obeys instantly.
Nox watches the exchange.
His jaw tightens.
NOX: This isn’t what I built.
SCARLETT: I know.
The implication hangs between them.
INT. PALACE – SCARLETT’S CHAMBER – NIGHT
Moonlight through red curtains.
Scarlett removes a piece of armor and places it carefully on
a stand.
Aleric stands by the window, restless.
The city stretches below them in perfect lines.
Perfect silence.
SCARLETT: You’ve barely spoken all day.
ALERIC: I’ve had nothing worth saying.
Scarlett turns to him.
SCARLETT: That’s not like you.
Aleric almost laughs.
ALERIC: I’m beginning to think very little
of who you used to be before all of this. Before what happened in Valenrith.
A beat.
ALERIC (CONT’D): Before you chose him.
Scarlett moves closer.
SCARLETT: Then let it die. It’s in the past.
Aleric meets her gaze.
There is love there. Deep. Old. Painful.
But not peace.
ALERIC: Is that what you did?
Scarlett stills.
SCARLETT: I did what I had to do.
ALERIC: So did I.
A long silence.
SCARLETT: And do you regret it?
Aleric looks out over the city.
At the banners.
At the order.
At the quiet.
ALERIC: Every minute of every day.
Scarlett says nothing.
Because she understands.
INT. THRONE CHAMBER – LATER
The chamber is nearly empty now.
Only Nox remains.
He stands before the throne, not seated upon it.
A servant enters carefully and kneels.
SERVANT: My lord… there was another incident
in the southern farmlands.
Nox doesn’t move.
NOX: What kind of incident?
SERVANT: Strange lights beneath the earth.
Livestock refusing to cross the fields. Water turning warm for no reason.
Nox turns.
Slowly.
NOX: Warm?
SERVANT: Yes, my lord.
A beat.
NOX: Leave.
The servant scrambles away.
Nox is alone again.
He stares at the empty throne.
The silence of the chamber starts to feel oppressive.
Then…
A flicker of black lightning runs along the floor beneath the
throne.
Gone in an instant.
Nox notices.
Kneels.
Touches the stone.
It hums faintly under his hand.
His expression darkens.
INT. HALL OF RECORDS – NIGHT
Rows and rows of ancient books and sealed scrolls.
Nox moves through the shelves with purpose.
No guards. No scribes.
He knows exactly where he’s going.
He reaches an old iron cabinet and opens it with a gesture.
Inside: ancient texts.
Stormfall.
Old symbols. Older warnings.
He pulls out a brittle manuscript.
Opens it.
Reads.
His eyes move faster.
Faster still.
A line catches him.
He stops.
Reads it again.
INSERT – MANUSCRIPT PAGE
When the vessel is broken, the burden remains. What the storm once carried will seek another
escape.
Nox’s
fingers tighten around the page.
NOX (quietly): No…
He keeps reading.
Another line.
If the overflow is denied its release, the old makers will
answer. And those responsible will answer in Purgatory.
Nox shuts the book.
Too fast.
Breathing heavier now.
For the first time in a long time… Fear. Real fear.
INT. PALACE OBSERVATORY – NIGHT
A vast domed room open to the sky.
Stars above.
But dimmer than they should be.
Aleric stands waiting when Nox enters.
He turns.
Sees Nox’s face.
Immediately knows something is wrong.
ALERIC: What happened?
Nox walks past him to the center of the room.
Looks up at the stars.
NOX: I ended Stormfall.
ALERIC: I know.
NOX: But…
A beat.
NOX (to himself): I made a mistake
He looks down at his hands.
NOX (CONT’D): I’m very proud of what I did. But I
might not have foreseen some consequences of it.
Aleric’s expression shifts.
ALERIC: Like what?
A long silence.
NOX: I still don’t know.
Those words hang in the air.
ALERIC: Are you okay? You seem… worried.
Nox looks up at the dim stars.
NOX: That’s because I am. I shouldn’t
have…
The observatory suddenly feels colder.
ALERIC: Wait… you’re saying that by ending
Stormfall…
NOX: I might have started something much
worse than I expected.
Aleric takes that in.
ALERIC: Then fix it.
Nox lets out a short, humorless laugh.
NOX: If I knew how, I would’ve done it
already.
Aleric steps closer.
ALERIC: Then why tell me?
Nox finally looks at him.
And for the first time since that fateful night, Hunter’s
death, he looks tired.
Not powerful.
Tired.
NOX: Because I trust you.
ALERIC: You do?
A beat.
NOX:
More than I trust myself right now.
Silence.
EXT. PALACE BALCONY – LATER
The city below is silent under moonlight.
Scarlett stands alone at the railing.
Aleric joins her.
Neither speaks at first.
SCARLETT: He told you something.
Aleric doesn’t deny it.
ALERIC: He’s afraid.
That gets her attention.
SCARLETT: Of what?
Aleric looks over the city.
ALERIC: That he won… and still failed.
Scarlett turns back toward the city.
Toward the statue-lined streets and silent rooftops.
INT. THRONE CHAMBER – SAME NIGHT
Nox sits now.
Finally.
But the throne no longer looks like victory.
It looks like a burden.
A distant rumble echoes somewhere beneath the palace.
The windows tremble slightly.
Nox looks up.
Another rumble.
Far away.
But growing.
He rises.
Walks toward the center of the chamber.
The black stone beneath his feet begins to glow faintly with
veins of pale light.
Not his magic.
Something older.
Something answering.
The chamber doors burst open.
A WARDEN rushes in and kneels.
WARDEN: My lord, the magic reservoirs below
the city...
Nox goes still.
WARDEN (CONT’D): They’re glowing.
A beat.
Nox’s face empties.
Not rage. Not shock.
Recognition.
He knows exactly what this means.
Even if he does not understand all of it yet.
NOX: Clear the inner regions. Send
everyone to the outer provinces.
The warden hesitates.
WARDEN: My lord…
NOX: NOW.
The warden scrambles away.
Nox turns toward the windows.
The stars above the city flicker once.
Then dim.
NOX (whispering): What did I do?
EXT. VERITAS – ROOFTOPS – PRE-DAWN
The city sleeps uneasily.
No riots. No screams.
Just a strange pressure in the air.
Nox stands atop the palace, alone against the dying night.
His cloak snaps in the wind.
Below him lies the world he built.
Scarlett emerges onto the rooftop behind him.
Aleric shortly after.
Neither interrupts at first.
They look out together.
SCARLETT: The wardens have cleared the inner regions.
ALERIC: The reservoirs have stopped glowing,
as well.
Nox says nothing.
He keeps staring at the horizon.
At the far-off line where sea meets sky.
A jagged thread of light cuts faintly across the dark above
the coast.
Small.
But widening.
SCARLETT: Tell us what’s happening.
Nox finally speaks.
NOX: I made a mistake.
Aleric and Scarlett exchange a look.
NOX (CONT’D): I think I broke something by
destroying Stormfall…
He turns to face them.
His certainty is still there.
But thinner now.
Cracked.
NOX (CONT’D): And I don’t know how to fix ir.
Silence.
Scarlett takes that in without flinching.
Aleric looks to the tear in the sky.
ALERIC: Then this is your fault.
A beat.
Nox does not defend himself.
NOX: Yes.
That answer lands harder than any denial could.
Scarlett steps forward.
SCARLETT: Then we fix it.
Nox looks at the broken line of light above the coast.
At the world beneath it.
At the order he bled for.
NOX: We will. I just need to meet your
friend, Aleric.
For the first time… Nox feels fragile.
A low, unnatural thunder rolls across the horizon.
No storm follows.
Nox watches it.
And for the briefest moment, He looks small.
END OF EPISODE.
