EMMY RACE: Outstanding Comedy Series

The Creative Arts Emmys are in the books with the main telecast coming this Monday. Here's a look at the final category I'm covering - Outstanding Comedy Series!

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES
Abbott Elementary (ABC)
The Bear (FX)
Hacks (HBO Max)
Margo's Got Money Troubles (Apple TV)
Nobody Wants This (Netflix)
Only Murders in the Building (Hulu)
Shrinking (Apple TV)
Widow's Bay (Apple TV)

A few months ago, the general consensus was that with The Studio out of the way, Hacks would storm back and reclaim the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy for its fifth and final season. I was always a bit skeptical of that because the Emmys rarely go back to a show after it loses in a major category. But I still thought Hacks might win because there wasn't an obvious other show to win. Then along came Widow's Bay. Apple's water cooler hit was a smash with critics and had a groundswell of support as the season went along. Now, it looks to be in the driver's seat to give Apple this award for a new comedy series for a second year in a row. The momentum seems to definitely be on Widow's Bay's side but I wouldn't totally rule out Hacks just because it was the final season of a beloved show and there's the whole horror element to Widow's. The other six nominees don't really seem like they have a chance. Shrinking has gotten into the nominations the last two years but there's no indication that they are ready to win. Margo's Got Money Troubles was Apple's big push at first but got eclipsed by Widow's Bay. Abbott Elementary and Only Murders in the Building are perennial nominees who never actually win. The Bear was a two time winner but its winning days are over. And it was a bit surprising that Nobody Wants This ended up back in the nominations field.

Will Win: Widow's Bay
Power Ranking the Rest by Chance of a Win:
2. Hacks
3. Shrinking
4. Margo's Got Money Troubles
5. Abbott Elementary
6. Only Murders in the Building
7. The Bear
8. Nobody Wants This

Should Win: Shrinking
Should Have Been Nominated: Jury Duty Presents Company Retreat
