Summer Renew/Cancel, Week 13: 'SNL' Will Get To Keep On Updating You

It's time for Week 13 of the Summer Renew/Cancel! A new show premiered this week, and it was a bright spot in a sad crop of Thursday ratings. Stay tuned for my prediction for it, as well as updates on the rest of the Summer shows.

SNL Weekend Update Thursday: The Summer premiere of this series, based on SNL's Weekend Update segment, performed very well, growing by half a point from its lead-in and it was 0.7 above its lead-out. A 1.2 is a great performance for any Summer show, especially against Big Brother and with preemptions. NBC is likely pleased with these results, and I can't see this show not returning next season. It starts as a LIKELY RENEWAL, but if it holds up well, expect an upgrade by the time its finale airs.

Midnight, Texas: Midnight, Texas was going to be headed to the Likely Renewal category this week, but then the 0.7 happened. That's nothing that's going to get me to downgrade it, because it's probably still good enough to get a renewal, considering it's an in-house production, but that doesn't mean I'll be rewarding the performance with an upgrade. Well, at least not this week. It still LEANS RENEWAL.

The Night Shift: With the good news for SNL and Midnight, it's time for some bad news for the Night Shift. This show sank to 0.5 last Thursday, well below its latest episode. Initially, I thought that the show would be cancelled, but started changing my mind as it began performing better. But then came its 0.5. Now, it's looking dead, and not much can revive it. It heads back to cancellation territory with a LEANS CANCELLATION prediction, but don't expect it to stay there very long if it stays at 0.5.

TV Ratings 8/9/17: Carmichael Series Finale In Line With Average, Story of Diana Solid (UPDATED)

It was a busy Wednesday night, with a few specials airing in place of the typical repeats and a series finale. The Carmichael Show ended its three season run with a 0.8 and a 0.7, right in line with what it's been doing for most of this season. Its lead-in was much bigger than usual, a two-hour AGT recap special, which was the #2 program on last night. The only thing to beat it was Big Brother, which saw its first preliminary 2.0 of the season. It lead into Salvation, which while still being laughably low-rated can at least brag that it's the #1 non-BB CBS Summer show this week. After it was a Criminal Minds repeat at 0.5, or one tenth higher than the original Salvation that aired in the slot last week. Fox's MasterChef lost two tenths, but that still doesn't excuse The F Word slipping to a 0.5. The F Word is a true disaster for Fox, but it could be worse. It could be American Grit. ABC had obviously preempted comedy repeats at 8 (both at 0.8), and a Lady Di special at 9. The special came in at 1.0, well above anything that's aired on Wednesdays this Summer. It's likely inflated as well, but even if it comes down a tenth it's still a nice result that will be on par with ABC's Diana special from May. The CW had Arrow and Supernatural repeats at 0.2 and 0.3.

SNL Weekend Update Thursday (August 2017)

Zoo: After many low 0.5s and a few 0.6s, Zoo hit a new series low this past week. It hit a 0.4, well below anything it did last season, despite its huge timeslot upgrade. I've said in the latest editions of these posts, CBS is indeed having a rough Summer. However, that doesn't mean they'll spare any of the shows, and it certainly won't be the lowest rated flop. Zoo's down nearly 35% this year, and its final average will probably be somewhere around 0.5. CBS doesn't need this show. It's CERTAIN TO BE CANCELED.

Salvation: A fellow CBS Summer flop, Salvation dipped to a new low of 0.4 as well this week when CBS served up a science fiction double feature. It's still LIKELY TO BE CANCELED, but if it ties that low when airing directly after Big Brother, as Zoo has done, expect a downgrade for this sci-fi flop.

TV Ratings 8/2/17: Big Brother Ticks Up, Salvation Sinks Very Low (UPDATED)

Wednesday night saw lots of upticks and downticks in the ratings, with only a few shows steady week-to-week. Starting with CBS, which got full attention in our headline, Big Brother ticked up to a 1.9. It's still failing to hit a 2.0, but it has another chance tonight, when it hopefully will. That 1.9 was wasted on Salvation, which ticked down to a 0.5 at 9. But it gets worse. At 10, Salvation ticked down to a 0.4, lower than all three repeats scheduled against it. It make CBS' rough Summer even worse, as Salvation was previously the only non-BB Summer show on the Eye to avoid a 0.5. NBC had a Got Talent recap special at 8, which was a tenth higher than Forever yOung's finale last week. That helped the Carmichael Show and both repeats tick up a tenth, as well. Fox continued to have a successful 8 PM with MasterChef. The cooking competition series has had a very impressive season, holding its own against Big Brother. The same can not be said for The F Word, which stayed steady at its 0.6. The CW (0.2/0.2) was in repeats, and the were steady with last week. ABC had a particularly strong Modern Family repeat and saw an uptick at 8 for the Goldbergs.

Finals Update: The SVU repeat (+0.1) and MasterChef (+0.1) adjusted up. The Arrow repeat (-0.1) adjusted down.

The Night Shift: This medical drama has seen a slow uptick from that awful 0.6 it started the season with. It's most recent episode received a 0.8, which is fine for Summer. That isn't a huge number, and it makes it the lowest-rated of NBC's Thursday lineup, but it's fine. It's also owned by Sony, which is almost as beneficial as being a network-owned show. Sony's been known to fight for their shows, and they recently got Timeless renewed, despite it hitting the same 0.6 the Night Shift got. Night Shift is also got a panel at NBC's TCA, so NBC seems to care about it. For all of these reasons, the Night Shift now LEANS RENEWAL.

Hooten & the Lady: This adventure show won't be returning to the CW, President Mark Pedowitz announced recently. This decision was made by its original UK network, but it won't be continuing on the CW either, so it still counts as being CANCELED.
