Summer Renew/Cancel, Week 18: It's Been Fun, but Summer Must Come to an End (Final Predictions)

Welcome to the final Summer Renew/Cancel of the Summer 2017 season! It's time for my absolute, 100% final calls on all of the remaining shows, and as promised last week, I'll be using percentages as well for this post.

Marlon: This show has clearly benefitted from a strong lead-in, as evidenced by its consistent half-hour drops, but it's doing well nonetheless. Great News and Trial & Error were both influenced by their Voice lead-in, did terribly, and got renewed anyway. Great News got the best fall slot available to an NBC comedy. Trial & Error wasn't even owned by the network. Marlon should have no trouble. 80% chance of renewal

Midnight, Texas: I've had this show as a renewal all season long, but I've nearly always been hesitant on it. I've never been confident, because it's had some really good upticks and some really ugly downticks, going from 0.9 to 0.7 in a just a week. I kept it as a renewal then, but its recent 0.6s have me doubting it. The 0.8 for its finale is a good sign, but I'm still not sold. 49% chance of renewal

The Night Shift: This show has had really bad datapoints this season, going as low as 0.5 this year. However, it's also done some decent numbers. Based on numbers alone, it should be done, but with Sony behind it, it has a real shot. It's definitely one of the trickier shows this season. 45% of renewal

Salvation: Of two new shows this season for CBS, this show did a bit less awfully, but it still ldid terrible. It had a rough start and got uglier from there, and I was prompted to downgrade it when it got a 0.4 directly out of Big Brother. CBS's decision should be an easy one. 10% chance of renewal

SNL Weekend Update Thursday: With a 1.2 average, this was the #1 scripted show of the Summer season, despite consistent preemptions during all three weeks. It never even aired in Philadelphia, one of the country's largest cities. Especially considering that it's a direct tie-in to one of the network's most acclaimed, longest-running, and highest-rated shows, there's absolutely no reason for this not come back next year. 100% chance of renewal

Somewhere Between: This show has done horribly for its entire run, and ABC barely promoted it, showing they don't even care about it. It even got a timeslot downgrade. This thing is dead. 0% chance of renewal

Zoo: One of the longest-running Summer shows this year, Zoo absolutely flopped when placed behind Big Brother. It's fallen to a 0.4 multiple times, and it's down 30%. And it would likely be down just as much next season. CBS really doesn't need this. Still there's a (very) outside chance it could come back. 10% chance of renewal

Summer Renew/Cancel, Week 17: Summer's Almost Over, but Midnight, Texas Remains a Barnburner

It's the second-to-last week of the Summer Renew/Cancel, but we've still got plenty to talk about. Join me this week for my thoughts on NBC's Midnight, Texas, as well as fellow NBC newbie Marlon.

Midnight Texas: While this show isn't setting the world on fire in the ratings department, it's got an OK seasonal average so far. However, the show has hit some pretty ugly numbers, in particular its 0.6 when it had to air at 10:30. It's also going to have to air on Wednesdays at 10 for one random episode this week, which is obviously not ideal for a pretty serialized show. The show could definitely fall hard, especially behind a lead-in that will probably be somewhere around 0.9, when the show is used to a mid-ones lead-in from Ninja Warrior. On the other hand, the show is owned by NBC, which should make a renewal easier. I really don't know what to do with this show, so it very slightly LEANS RENEWAL, but things could truly go either way.

Marlon: This show isn't pulling in huge ratings, but it's still doing well enough for it to secure another season. It may be completely inflated by AGT, and it might collapse next season if it's moved away, but that's not going to factor into my decision this season. 1.1 is still perfectly fine for the Summer, especially for an owned NBC comedy, and so it is a LIKELY RENEWAL.

Summer is nearly at its end! This means that unfortunately, Summer Renew/Cancel is also reaching its end. I'll be returning next week for my absolutely, positively, 100% final predictions, where I'll give final opinions on all of the shows with undecided fates, and I'll even give renewal chance percentages for each show. Summer Renew/Cancel, Week 16: Marlon Will Be Back

It's Week 16, and the Summer season is quickly winding down. I've still got three more Renew/Cancels for you, and it's time for one of them. One Summer show will receive an upgrade today, so stay tuned to find out which one.

Marlon: While the show has a really strong lead-in that's consistently at 2.0, its still easily the #2 scripted series of the Summer, only behind Weekend Update. While 1.1 is only so-so when you consider the lead-in that this show has, it's still likely a good enough number for it to get a renewal, especially since it's an in-house production. Marlon is a LIKELY RENEWAL

Midnight, Texas: After a strong 0.9, this show dipped back down to 0.7. That's not a great number, and I really don't need to tell you that. However, the show's still doing OK, and it's owned by the network. The real test for it is next week, when it airs in an unusual timeslot with a 1.0-ish lead-in. If it absolutely collapses, it could be the end for this Texas-set fantasy series. For now, it very slightly LEANS RENEWAL

Even though Summer is winding down quickly, I'll be back again next week for another edition of the Renew/Cancel, and the Tuesday after that for my final Summer predictions.

Summer Renew/Cancel, Week 15: NBC's Newbie Shows All Look Healthy

It's Week 15 of the Summer Renew/Cancel, and today I'll be examining NBC's shows, and I'll be re-categorizing one of them. Stay tuned to find out which one that is, plus my analysis on the other newbies.

Midnight, Texas: While Midnight had a really rough drop to 0.6 when airing in some really crappy circumstances, the show had a really nice rebound to 0.9 in its most recent outing. That's the same number it premiered to earlier this Summer, and it's really impressive that it was able to recover by THAT much. That's not something we see frequently, so this is a good sign for M,T. It still LEANS RENEWAL, but the future looks brighter for it after this week.

SNL Weekend Update Thursday: With an uptick to 1.3 for its finale, Weekend Update had an impressive Summer run. Its 1.23 average is even more impressive when considering that it was preempted in many parts of the country. With the numbers it received, and the fact that it's an SNL spinoff (meaning the network probably cares about it more than the average Summer show), it's not really a matter of if it'll be back. It's when. It's the very first CERTAIN RENEWAL of the Summer.

Marlon: While this show doesn't have great retention, it's actually pretty steady in half-hours. This means that the show has a relatively dedicated audience, or at the very least, people are interested enough to stay tuned. It was also relatively steady in its second week. I think these are good signs for the show, so as of now, it LEANS RENEWAL

Even though everything has premiered for the summer, I'll be back again next week for another edition of the Renew/Cancel,  and every Tuesday after that for my other Summer predictions.

TV Ratings 8/24/17: The Night Shift Rises, Big Brother Sinks (UPDATED)

It was yet again an adjustment-filled Thursday, with most shows adjusting down from their preliminary ratings. Despite that, some shows actually managed to be up week-to-week. None of those shows were on CBS. Big Brother had a steep 0.4 decline to 1.7, nearly a Thursday low point. Behind BB, Zoo sank two tenths to an embarrassing and just plain sad 0.4. NBC had the best night, with the finale of SNL Weekend Update, The Night Shift, and the repeat of Great News all ticking up from last week. The Wall, however, was down. On ABC, the Boy Band finale was higher than last week, though Battle of the Network Stars ticked down to an ugly dumber. Fox and CW were both rock solid.
