The Bullpen Season 1 Episode 9: Waffle Bowl

Kurt: long-term reliever
Lorenzo: middle relief pitcher
Jason: left-handed specialist
Robert: 8th inning pitcher/setup man
Bryan: closer
Eli: various relief positions
Garry: Bullpen coach

Garry: Thanks everyone for coming to my off-season cookout.
Robert: You made us come and it’s January. I don’t think my burger was ever warm.
Garry: Whatever. You know what’s next.
*blank stares*
Garry: Wiffle ball. Remember? I’ve told you every day for the last three weeks we were gonna play wiffle ball at the cook-out?
Lorenzo: I thought you said we were having waffle bowls.
Bryan: What the hell is a waffle bowl?
Lorenzo: I was here to find out.
Jason: I just pulled up the invite and it clearly says we were having waffle bowls.
Garry: Well we’re not having waffle bowls, we’re playing wiffle ball. Do any of you know how to do anything related to it?
Jason: I can be the dugout umpire.
Bryan: I can be the guy on the on-deck circle.
Lorenzo: I can pitch.
Garry: Those aren’t real positions and no you can’t.
Lorenzo: I already have the ball.
Garry: Fine. You, Jason, and Eli be a team. Kurt, Robert, and Bryan another team. I’ll do what I do best. *sits down*
Lorenzo: The Lorenzos are coming to beat Team 2!
Bryan: Are we really going to let him call us that?
Kurt: Whatever. As long as I can be Teammate 1.
*Lorenzo throws first pitch to Kurt, goes over his head*
Kurt: You trying to hit me?
Lorenzo: No...
Kurt: Try it again.
*Lorenzo throws second pitch straight to the ground*
Garry: That’s it. Everyone has to throw their own ball up in the air and hit it that way. Think you can manage that?
*Kurt throws pitch up in the air and gets a long hit*
Garry: Kurt...that was actually a good hit.
Kurt: Thanks coach, I’ve been going to batting cages.
Garry: Why...?
Kurt: The chance I have of going into most of our games as a batter is just as good as my chances of going in as a pitcher so why not?
Garry: True. Robert you’re up, surprise me.
*Robert hits a solid ground ball for a base hit*
Garry: Men on first and third with no outs. Looks like the Lorenzos do just as bad in the field as when they pitch.
*Bryan hits a fly ball to the fence in Garry’s backyard, Eli jumps over the fence to make the catch. Garry stares with his mouth wide open. Kurt and Robert both make good contact with the ball in their next at-bats, but Lorenzo and Jason make diving catches. Garry stares in shock.*
Garry: Guys you’re...actually good at everything except what you’re paid to do.
Jason: Rude. I think I sit on benches just fine.
Garry: I mean pitch.
Bryan: We’re the lowest-paid people in the entire league. The interns make more money than we do.
Garry: You still get paid and I’m trying to give you a compliment.
Lorenzo: What’d we do?
Eli: Yeah I could make those catches day and night.
Garry: Why are you guys even listed as pitchers? This all makes sense now! You only suck at pitching because you never actually wanted to be pitchers!
Bryan: Actually my lifelong dream was to be an 8th-inning reliever and I am so close to that dream right now.
Robert: Wanna switch?
Bryan: Sure.
Garry: Doesn’t work that way. But seriously...have any of you ever thought about trying to get scouted by a non-pitching division of a team?
Jason: It would be pretty cool to get on the field a bit more.
Kurt: Maybe we could go on one of those talent shows. We’d be the new Susan Boyles if we stuck to batting and fielding.
Lorenzo: Or singing.
Kurt: We’re not singing.
Garry: You’re not going on a talent show at all. I’m talking to Pete tomorrow about changing your positions.
*pause*
Robert: Who’s Pete?
Garry: I don’t know I figure someone on the team has to be named Pete.
Eli: Do you realize how good our team is though? There’s no way we’d get a spot.
Lorenzo: Maybe we could be understudies.
Garry: You mean benchwarmers?
Lorenzo: We do that already.
Garry: Different bench though.
Lorenzo: So no $2 million bench?
Garry: It’d be there, you just wouldn’t be sitting on it.
Lorenzo: Oh I’m sitting on that bench.
Garry: Then you have to stay in the bullpen.
Lorenzo: OK.
Jason: Yeah I’m with Lorenzo on this one, I’d kind of like the bench.
Eli: Good thinking Lorenzo.
Bryan: Plus, it’d be weird going over there. We’d be the new guys, they say it can be tough to make new friends.
Robert: How is nobody bringing up the fact we barely know the names of anyone on our own team?
Garry: OK so it’s settled, you’d all like to waste your potential because you’re comfortable where you are...literally.
Kurt: I’d kind of like to see a little change, actually. From this entire scene. I don’t know, maybe join a new team?
Garry: You want to get traded?
Kurt: I don’t know. But as I’ve said I’ve been taking batting practice and wasn’t very vocal about the new bench. Maybe it’s for the best I step away and start a new chapter.*long pause, then laughs* I’m kidding guys! Why would I ever want that when I can get paid to do what I’m doing right now?
Jason: Gets me thinking though...I wonder what it would be like if any of us got traded...

The Bullpen Season 1, Episode 8: New Year, New Bench

Kurt: long-term reliever
Lorenzo: middle relief pitcher
Jason: left-handed specialist
Robert: 8th inning pitcher/setup man
Bryan: closer
Eli: various relief positions
Garry: Bullpen coach

[Scene: The Bullpen]
Garry: Thanks everyone for meeting me here at the bullpen on such quick notice. I have something important to talk about.
Bryan: We’re gonna get to meet the guys who play on our team?
Lorenzo: They’re gonna stop selling cotton candy?
Jason: You’re taking me off your fantasy team?
Garry: No...something more important. Ownership called, they’re making renovations to the stadium. If we want any improvements to this place, we have to order now.
Robert: How about a big tent? That way only we can see ourselves. No risk of getting put on the giant outfield screen for everyone to boo us.
Jason: We asked for that last year, they said no.
Robert: But did they?
Jason: Yes Robert. Yes.
Robert: What if we convince them they didn’t?
Garry: You realize they’re not stupid, right Robert? If they were they’d petition to get you guys in more games. Or any games, I should say.
Lorenzo: OK I can’t think of anything, I’m leaving. [exits]
Garry: Thanks for your time! I know two minutes is a big time commitment for you!
Lorenzo: Thanks for understanding coach.
Garry: So what is it you have to do now?
Lorenzo: Something.
Garry: Oh great excuse there.
Eli [enters]: Sorry I’m late coach, was just practicing my pitching.
Jason: Why?
Eli: I like to pretend I’m a pitcher sometimes. All I really do is sit on an uncomfortable bench.
Bryan: And we have our renovation petition, everybody!
Eli: Huh?
Garry: Ownership wants to make an upgrade to its bullpens and asked us if there’s anything we wanted.
Eli: Oh. Yeah. Definitively new bench.
Jason: Voice activated.
Bryan: And why would we need that?
Jason: It’s cool.
[Cut to meeting with Garry and owners Mike and Sally]
Mike: So Garry, as you know we love and respect your bullpen. We believe their role in the game is imperative to our team’s success.
Sally: Yes, we really do appreciate your style of making sure none of them want to go into the game. The Indianapolis Primitives has the best record in the league because of you.
Garry: Well it’s my honor to be their coach. Look, all I’m really here for is to tell you all the guys want a new bench.
Mike: And what’s wrong with the current one? It’s very standard for a bullpen bench.
Garry: Yes, but doesn’t the Indianapolis Primitives represent the future?
Sally (to Mike): Do we?
Mike (to Sally): Whatever the guy wants.
Sally: Yes, we do Garry, something that Mike and I have known since we started.
Garry: OK, so this new bench has to have a soft, blue cushion and be voice activated.
Sally: Why voice activated?
Garry: We spend 3 to 4 hours every day on that bench, it’s voice activated or I quit.
Mike: And what would you like this bench to recognize you saying?
Garry: FIGURE IT OUT! [storms out]
Sally (yelling to Garry): REQUEST DENIED!
[Cut back to bullpen]
Jason: So when is that bench being put in?
Garry: I may have yelled at them and stormed out. So...possibly never.
Jason: You’ve gotta be kidding me, we lost a bench because you didn’t know how to say “We want a bench, please?”.
Garry: I wasn’t used to talking to them.
Eli: Screw it, I’m going over there.
[Cut to Eli with Mike and Sally]
Mike: Excuse me but who are you?
Eli: I’m Eli, I’m a backup for the bullpen.
Mike: Get out.
Eli: I’m joking! You don’t remember me?
Mike: No...who are you again?
Eli: You don’t know who I am?
Mike: No.
Eli: You really don’t?
Sally: What do you want.
Eli: Well I personally do not want anything, though I have noticed that the people in the bullpen look very uncomfortable on that bench of theirs. Have you considered buying them a new one? Voice activated, maybe?
Sally: They do use that bench a lot...Yeah sure, I’ll think about it.
[Cut back to bullpen]
Eli: He’s gonna think about it!!!
Garry: He’s gonna “think about it”? Yeah he just wanted you out of his office.
Jason: I’m going in!
[Cut to Jason with Mike and Sally]
Jason: Hello James, hello Shirley, I’m
Mike: Get out.
Jason: OK
[Cut back to bullpen]
Jason: Talked to James and Shirley, they said—
Bryan: I’m going in. If anyone knows how to successfully finish something related to our team, it’s me.
Garry: Not the starting pitchers?
Bryan: Them too. But also me...once or twice...right?
Kurt: No.
Bryan: That all you gonna contribute today?
Kurt: Yeah.
[Cut to Bryan with Mike and Sally]
Bryan: OK I don’t know who you are and you don’t know who I am, so I’m just going to come out and say this: the bullpen needs a new bench.
Mike: Isn’t this getting tired? This whole “the bullpen needs a new bench” plot line is really getting drawn out at this point.
Sally: Right?
Mike: If I give you the bench will you all stop coming to our semi-deluxe office?
Bryan: This is the semi-deluxe one?
Sally: Yes, the deluxe one has four TVs, two bars, three
Mike: Not the point Sally. Have your bench, how much do you need?
Bryan: $20?
Mike: Here’s $2 million, knock yourself out bud.
[Cut back to bullpen]
Bryan: I just got ourselves $2 million dollars everyone. Time for that bench.
Eli: How are we going to spend $2 million dollars on a bench? Isn’t that a lot of money?

Garry: $2 million bench, here we come!

The Bullpen Season 1 Episode 6–Starter #1: 2nd Start

Kurt: long-term reliever
Lorenzo: middle relief pitcher
Jason: left-handed specialist
Robert: 8th inning pitcher/setup man
Bryan: closer
Eli: various relief positions
Garry: Bullpen coach

*bullpen phone rings*
Team Manager: Alright, that’s the 2nd time I’ve called the bullpen with no answer. Down 3-0 in the first inning, we might be using them today. If only they answered the phone.
*cut to Robert in his home*
Robert: *on the phone* Hey Jason, so apparently the game started 15 minutes ago, I thought it was supposed to start at 8?
Jason: What game?
Robert: The team we technically play on has a game tonight.
Jason: They won’t need us anyways. I’ll leave in a few minutes.
Robert: It’s the first inning and they’re down 3-0. Start heading over when you can, I’ll call the rest.
*all arrive to the bullpen slightly disheveled around the same time*
Garry: Nobody told me the game was at 7. Why do people never tell me things, I am the bullpen coach after all.
Kurt: Think you just answered your own question.
*phone rings*
Eli: We should pick that up, we’re down 4-0 now. They’re actually calling us to have someone warm up!
Garry: Let it ring.
Bryan: Don’t you want us to go in the game?
Garry: No, and I’m sure you all don’t either.
Bryan: How bad could it be? Let’s get through this one game and then we’ll be free for another month.
Lorenzo: It was due to happen. I just hope they don’t call me of all people to warm up.
*phone rings again*
Jason: For the love of God Garry can you pick that up?
Garry: If you all insist. *listens on the phone*. Lorenzo time to warm up.
Lorenzo: *softly* Why is it always me? Jason, you wanted to pick it up so badly, I say you be my catcher.
Jason: Just don’t throw too fast, you know I don’t know how to catch.
*Lorenzo throws the first warm-up pitch and it goes into the outfield.*
Lorenzo: Hey! Fred, can we have our ball back?
Fred: Here you go teammate.
Lorenzo: Thanks so much. *hit goes right to where the center fielder was originally, leading to a run scored*
Kurt: Nice going Lorenzo, you gave up a run.
Garry: Lorenzo the dugout called, you’re in the game now.
Kurt: Wait they’re just skipping over me? I’m the long-term reliever!
Garry: They’re punishing Lorenzo. *to Lorenzo* tell you what, when you come back I’ll get you as many chicken wings as you get outs.
Lorenzo: I’m ready to pitch, coach! *pitches and comes back to the dugout for his one chicken wing*
Jason: *on his cell phone* Hey mom! I’m about to be on TV! Can you believe it? *to his teammates* anyone know what channel we’re on? *goes to pitch, comes back to the bullpen to a celebration*
Garry: Eli, dugout called, your turn.
Eli: I’m ready Garry. My fantasy team needs me. *pitches and comes back to a celebration*
Garry: Alright Kurt, we’re gonna need you for a couple innings now, you ready?
Kurt: No.
Garry: Have fun on the mound. *pitches and comes back to a celebration*
Garry: 8th inning Robert, it’s all you now!
Robert: Really? You trust me? Thank you!
Garry: Never said I trusted you, just relaying the message from the dugout. *Robert goes in to pitch, comes back to a bullpen celebration.*
Bryan: You know what? I feel ready. I don’t think I can mess this up.
Garry: That’s the spirit Bryan, go out there and close out the game.
Bryan: I sense 3 strikeouts in a row coming! *pitches and comes back to a bullpen celebration*
Robert: We did it everyone! We got through the game!
Jason: Let me just say I’m so proud of all of us, we really came together as a team to do what we do best.
Kurt: Finally, our time to be watched while we’re actually on the field.
Lorenzo: And not chasing after cotton candy either! *pauses* That reminds me I never got cotton candy today.
Garry: I knew my bullpen could get through the game. We learned a lot today. We showed great teamwork and came together even though we were all scared to go into the game at first.
Bryan: And I didn’t lose the game for us! No blown save for this guy!
Garry: You should all be very proud of yourselves. As they say, it doesn’t matter what the final score is, what matters is that you had fun. You win some you lose some. *cut to the scoreboard showing a 22-1 loss*
