Elementary Renewed by CBS for Season 7

CBS's Sherlockian procedural drama Elementary has been renewed for a seventh season. The series premiered its sixth season incredibly late, beginning April 30. It has not done well since it's premiered, with a 0.6 average so far, but the profits it recieves in syndication seem to be the reason for its somewhat-surprising renewal (TVRG had the series marked as a likely cancellation). Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu star in the show as Holmes and Watson, the iconic characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Code Black:
The medical drama has averaged a 0.7 this season so far. That's very unimpressive and it actually puts it in flop territory for the first time. While the show is no stranger to the bubble, and CBS seems to be a fan of it, that probably won't be enough for a fourth season. It's a close one, and Code Black hasn't flatlined just yet, but it seems like this might be the end of the line for it.

Elementary:
CBS's lowest Sunday-Friday show, Elementary has survived this long due to its lucrative syndication deal. This time around, contracts will have to be renegotiated. The low-rated show has to end sometime, and with some hurdles in the way of its renewal, this is probably it. Don't count Holmes and Watson out just yet, even if they are down.

CBS Announces Season Premiere Dates for Elementary and Code Black

CBS Announces Season Premiere Dates for Elementary and Code Black
CBS has announced today the premiere dates for two of their returning shows that are yet to be scheduled. Both will debut near the end of the regular season and air into the summer.

The sixth season police procedural of Elementary will premiere on Monday, April 30 at 10:00, taking over Scorpion's timeslot. Elementary has a 21 episode order for its sixth season. Originally, 13 episodes were ordered, but CBS upped that order in November. Scorpion, which will conclude its fourth season on April 23, is no stranger to airing its season finale in April. The series concluded its first and second seasons on April 20, 2015 and April 25, 2016, respectively.

The third season of medical drama Code Black will premiere that same week, on Wednesday, May 2 at 10:00, taking over the timeslot from Criminal Minds. This is the timeslot that Code Black aired in during its first two seasons, though both of those seasons aired from September to February. The 13 episodes that the third season will consist of is less than the 18 and 16 that its first and second seasons respectively consisted of. This is the first time that Criminal Minds will end its season in April, but it is only one week earlier than when it ended its seasons in 2015 and 2016.

This leaves one CBS drama unscheduled, international co-production Ransom. The first season of the procedural following a hostage negotiation team aired on Saturdays in early 2017. Also unscheduled is unscripted series Undercover Boss, which usually airs in-season, but may air its entire season in the summer this time around, considering how it was left out of today's news.

CBS Expands 'Elementary' Season 6 Order to 21 Episodes

Lucy Liu, Jonny Lee Miller ("Elementary") | CBS
CBS has expanded the upcoming sixth season of Elementary from 13 episodes to 21. The previous five seasons of the series produced 24 episodes each, with a lucrative syndication deal making full seasons an incentive for the network. For the first time since its debut in 2012, Elementary was absent from the fall schedule last May following its increasingly meager first-run ratings performance.

With the network recently deciding against more Wisdom of the Crowd, the return of Elementary to Sunday nights is a possibility going forward. In addition, the network has yet to offer scheduling for the third season of Code Black, as well as the first season of Instinct, starring The Good Wife's Alan Cumming.
