EMMY RACE: Supporting Actor & Actress in a Comedy Series

I'm taking a look each week at some of the major categories for the Emmy Awards. Here's a look at the races for Supporting Actor & Actress in a Comedy Series!

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Colman Domingo, The Four Seasons (Netflix)
Paul W. Downs, Hacks (HBO Max)
Harrison Ford, Shrinking (Apple TV)
Nick Offerman, Margo's Got Money Troubles (Apple TV)
Stephen Root, Widow's Bay (Apple TV)
Michael Urie, Shrinking (Apple TV)
Tyler James Williams, Abbott Elementary (ABC)

This category was home to the biggest upset in recent Emmys memory last year when Jeff Hiller came out of nowhere to win for Somebody Somewhere (most pegged him as 6th or 7th most likely in the category to win). This year, we are back to Harrison Ford being the frontrunner just as he was a year ago at this time. But after his loss last year, I don't feel good about that status. I still have him in first because I just don't think any other contender is strong enough. I am keeping my eye on Stephen Root though because Widow's Bay could be in a position to really overperform and Root has been a busy actor for a long time. But it still feels like Ford's time to me. Nick Offerman famously never got nominated for Parks and Recreation but has been an Emmy magnet since. I don't think Margo's Got Money Troubles is strong enough but I wouldn't totally rule him out. Paul W. Downs has won for other awards for Hacks and is back in the mix after missing a nomination last year. Despite a strong storyline this year, I don't think he is strong enough to win. Tyler James Williams gets nominated often but is not strong enough to win, Colman Domingo may win in the Guest category for Euphoria but not here and if anyone wins from Shrinking, it will be Ford and not Michael Urie.

Will Win: Harrison Ford, Shrinking
Power Ranking the Rest by Chance of a Win:
2. Root   3. Offerman   4. Downs   5. Williams   6. Domingo   7. Urie

Should Win: Ford
Should Have Been Nominated: Ted McGinley, Shrinking

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Dale Dickey, Widow's Bay (Apple TV)
Hannah Einbinder, Hacks (HBO Max)
Janelle James, Abbott Elementary (ABC)
Kate O'Flynn, Widow's Bay (Apple TV)
Michelle Pfeiffer, Margo's Got Money Troubles (Apple TV)
Megan Stalter, Hacks (HBO Max)
Jessica Williams, Shrinking (Apple TV)

After years of seemingly coming close, Hannah Einbinder finally got her Emmy last year for Hacks. Never mind that she really belongs in the lead category alongside Jean Smart, she was still a very deserving winner. It seemed like she was going to cruise to a repeat win for the final season of Hacks but then along came Kate O'Flynn. The Widow's Bay breakout has been very buzzy and now it's definitely a two person race. Right now, I'm giving the edge to O'Flynn on a Widow's Bay surge but a repeat from Einbinder would not surprise me at all. It really seems like it will be one of those two. Jessica Williams is definitely deserving but doesn't seem to be strong enough. Janelle James is now on her fifth nomination but she has never gotten the win even though she has outlasted her former winner co-star Sheryl Lee Ralph on the nominations front. Michelle Pfeiffer had a fair amount of love for Margo's Got Money Troubles but I don't believe she is strong enough for a win. Megan Stalter and Dale Dickey (a true surprise nom) are in the shadows of their frontrunning co-stars but are probably both happy for the nomination.

Will Win: Kate O'Flynn, Widow's Bay
Power Ranking the Rest by Chance of a Win:
2. Einbinder   3. Williams   4. James   5. Pfeiffer   6. Stalter   7. Dickey

Should Win: Jessica Williams, Shrinking
Should Have Been Nominated: Justine Lupe, Nobody Wants This
