Superstore Season 3 Finale Review

A year ago, the season finale of Superstore involved a tornado destroying the store, and while the tornado hit, Superstore fans who have been cheering on the main will they/won't they couple received a small victory when Amy and Jonah shared a kiss. This season started out with the fallout of that, and after many episodes of making their story very typical and not taking it much of anywhere, the last two episodes progressed the story with another kiss and Jonah breaking up with Kelly. Now the stage has been set for the season finale.

S3E22 "Town Hall"

The episode begins with the Cloud 9 employees being prepared for a town hall that will be held in the store and broadcast to all Cloud 9 stores. They are given a list of topics not to talk about, and one of them is Myrtle. Amy and Jonah are curious about this, so they do some digging. They discover that Jeff wrote Myrtle up for a variety of small offenses, which is very bizarre. They go to Jeff about this, who reveals that corporate wants older (so, more expensive) employees to be written up for minor offenses, so that there's a reason to fire them.

Amy and Jonah make it their mission to find evidence of this and bring it to attention. Amy distracts Laurie, hilariously inquiring about her sexual orientation and brainstorming people to set her up with, as Jonah steals her phone. Once they find the email, they have to come up with a creative way to get to the town hall, as their path is blocked by Laurie. Their rush is fairly entertaining, and they make it in time, while Dina distracts in some funny ways. The funniest moment at the town hall is when Jeff removes his disguise and Cheyenne, who knew about this all along, gasps. Jeff confronts the CEO, preparing to share the information he has evidence of. However, the plan is destroyed when Jeff is offered a job in Chicago.

Jeff insists to the group that he will be of help on the inside, but they remain discouraged. It really is disappointing, the episode spent the entire time on this story, only for them to gain nothing. The episode didn't spend any time on developing Amy and Jonah's relationship, only having them work together on this, but the ending had them unable to resist their urges any longer, and having sex, not knowing they are being broadcast in every Cloud 9 store. The two have taken another step closer to being together, but they didn't talk about what this means, just had sex, and with all the build-up, it doesn't feel like much of anything really.

This episode did a poor job of building off of the last one when it comes to Amy and Jonah's relationship. It felt like things quickly got back to the way they had been before for most the episode, and then gave us a development that really wasn't much. Meanwhile, the main story of the episode had some good funny moments, but felt disappointing in the end.

Superstore S3E21 Review

As Superstore heads toward the end of its third season, after it set plot points in motion last week, this week's episode picks up right where the last one left off, and sets up the season finale.


S3E21 "Aftermath"

It was obvious that this week would give us a handful of Amy and Jonah drama. From the start of the episode to the end, it delivers on that, and it's frustrating, but not for the usual reasons. Throughout this season, I've complained at how the story has been dragged out. This week, it goes somewhere. It's frustrating because the characters are frustrating, and that's not always a bad thing. We start out with Amy and Jonah as we left them, following the kiss and Amy's reveal. This sparks some tension between them, as Jonah asks why Amy did that. Amy answers that she wanted to do it before everything changes, and Jonah isn't a big fan of that answer.

Later in the episode, Amy tries to have a conversation with Jonah, but that keeps being prevented. Finally, near the end of the episode, Jonah wants to talk, but Amy now isn't interested, which leads to a fight between the two of them. Jonah accuses Amy of only wanting to talk on her terms, never on anyone else's, and goes on to get upset with her for waiting until he was with Kelly to be interested in him, and tells her that she isn't as stuck as she acts like she is. What he says hurts, despite there being truth to much of it. The episode's end is perhaps the most frustrating though, because after Jonah's attempts to make things with Kelly more serious throughout the episode, he breaks up with her right after she says that she loves him. Poor Kelly, she doesn't deserve this.

Not everything having to do with Amy is so serious though. Everyone at Cloud 9 finds out about her pregnancy because Cheyenne can't keep her mouth shut, and the scene where it is revealed that everyone knows about it is very funny. Glenn's excitement about this is another great source of comedy, especially as he tells someone who doesn't know her about Amy's pregnancy on a conference call. Cheyenne and Mateo try to help out Amy because of her pregnancy, but Amy doesn't want charity. Mateo's attempt to give Amy $20 is especially entertaining, and gets even better when Bo takes the $20. Also, the writers make great use of Justine here, with the events that no one wants to go to.

While everything with Amy's pregnancy and Amy and Jonah's feelings for each other happens, the rest of the episode deals with Glenn and Dina's excitement over the idea of the CEO of Cloud 9 visiting their store. Glenn and Dina, when put together, as often happens, is usually used for contrast, so it was entertaining to see them both being excited, and feeding off of each other's excitement. There are some very funny moments in this story, such as when the duo takes over the intercom while Garrett is making an announcement about a lost child, when Sandra is excluded from the group photo, and as Glenn and Dina decide to go overboard, and instead of going with just a photo like they are supposed to, make a video. Their attempts at directing Cheyenne and Mateo are very funny, as is the final result. I also loved Mateo's line about how a TV show should be made about them.


This episode was made strong by being full of not just great comedy, but by pushing story forward, and rooting it in the characters. I felt that how frustrating Amy and Jonah (especially Jonah) were in this episode went a bit too far, but otherwise, I think this was a great episode.

Superstore S3E20 Review

This week's episode of Superstore focuses on the ongoing story for much of this season, Dina being a surrogate for Glenn and Jerusha. In this episode, Glenn and Jerusha find out the gender of their baby, and Dina worries about giving birth.


S3E20 "Gender Reveal"

The episode begins with Dina, Glenn, and Jerusha at the doctor's, looking at a sonogram. Dina's lack of interest, as well as her later disgust, are funny. However, then Dina starts to become worried about giving birth. Conversations with a couple of mothers make her more nervous, and that is quite entertaining. Dina freaks out, and she tells Glenn she doesn't want to carry his baby anymore. Her freak out is very funny, as she tries to come up with a way for the baby to be born without her carrying it anymore.

Amy and Cheyenne try to calm her down, claiming that giving birth wasn't that bad. While they talk, Amy discovers that a pregnancy test that she recently used was recalled because it was giving people false negatives. After taking an accurate test, she discovers that she's pregnant, and Adam is the father. This is a twist I did not expect, and I'm not sure how I feel about it, since we already had an episode where the story was Amy worrying that she might be pregnant. At the end of the episode, Amy and Jonah kiss. I'm glad that something actually happened here, not just more hinting at things. Hopefully the final two episodes of the season move things along here.

The Cloud 9 employees convince Glenn and Jerusha to have a gender reveal party. So, they plan it for them. Garrett is given the responsibility of handling the envelope that has the gender of the baby inside, and of course, since it is Garrett's responsibility, he fails at getting the color of the inside of the cake to match the gender. His attempt to cover up this is quite entertaining, as he goes on a rant about gender being a social construct. Also, the reaction to the inside of the cake being white was very funny, especially when Marcus announces excitedly that they are having a white baby.

After Jonah finds out that Jeff doesn't really work at Target, Mateo convinces Jonah to talk Jeff into getting a job. They act as good cop, bad cop, but Jonah keeps thinking that Mateo isn't acting anymore. The scenes between Mateo and Jonah are quite funny, especially the final one, where Mateo lets Jonah know that he too has been in plays.


This was an entertaining episode throughout, with each story being entertaining, and every part of the episode, aside from the story with Jonah and Mateo, connecting in interesting ways. The show seems to be preparing for the end of the season, and I'm glad that they are actually heading somewhere now, instead of wasting time.

Superstore S3E19 Review

Dina encourages the Cloud 9 employees to sell lottery tickets as lottery mania sweeps in, while Amy tries to get a raise on this week's Superstore.


S3E19 "Lottery"

The episode begins with all of the Cloud 9 employees sharing what they would spend the money on if they won the lottery, and after charity is mentioned, the others hilariously also add on that they would donate to charity as well. It's also very funny when Glenn talks about how he might not work on Thursdays if he won the lottery. Cheyenne and Mateo discuss picking numbers, where Cheyenne is very funny, and they decide to split the winnings if one of them wins.

Dina ends up in a rivalry with someone from another store, and attempts to sell more tickets at their store. Sandra tells Dina about how Garrett is discouraging people from buying lottery tickets (but she doesn't want to hear about anything else, there is a funny moment here where Dina tells Sandra she doesn't like tattletales), so Dina tricks Garrett into thinking there's something in it for him if they sell the winning ticket. Unfortunately, this story doesn't really go much of anywhere interesting from here.

Amy wants a raise, and she is very nervous about asking for one. She goes to Glenn to ask, and it's very funny when she barges into a conversation to ask. Glenn shares that he is no longer allowed to give raises (or hugs, which he is even more disappointed about, and causes some funny moments). She and Jonah track down the district manager, and find out she's golfing nearby. However, Amy ends up hitting her with a golf cart. Amy asks for a raise anyway, and of course, she doesn't get one. There feels like the stakes are incredibly low here, as Amy doesn't even seem to care that she doesn't get this raise.

The episode ends with a very typical scene, as Amy and Jonah share a moment full of romantic tension, while Jonah misses a call from Kelly. Superstore has been annoyingly typical all this season when it comes to the Amy and Jonah romance, but this is a new level.


This episode got off to a strong start, with quite a few funny moments, but the episode's stories just fell apart, and Amy and Jonah had a very, very typical ending. This was an episode with potential, but it did not deliver.

Superstore S3E18 Review

This week on Superstore, Cloud 9 is hosting a bunch of local vendors, which includes Glenn's wife Jerusha, and a woman that Garrett is interested in.


S3E18 "Local Vendors Day"

The episode begins with Glenn telling everyone about his wife Jerusha's needlepoint, and the two of them pretend that they don't know each other, which leads to a hilarious moment where the employees say that Glenn and his wife are in an open relationship to mess with him. Glenn pressures the employees into buying things from Jerusha, and when Jonah mentions this to him he has a very funny line, saying "I think if I was doing something subconsciously, I'd know it."

Glenn turns his pressure to others, and there's a funny moment where he gives someone two hundred dollars to buy things from Jerusha, but he goes to the wrong stand. In the end, Glenn pressures the employees once again, causing Jerusha to sell out. I get Glenn supporting his wife, but the lengths he goes to here seem unrealistically far.

After realizing that she isn't that Latina when it's pointed out by the beverage guy, that's Latino, she is seeing, Amy tries to prove that she is Latina. She ends up talking in Spanish to him, but she doesn't know that much Spanish, and when he talks quickly, she doesn't know what she has agreed to.

She goes to others to try to figure it out, and their suggestions are pretty funny. The most annoying part of this story though is Jonah's reaction when he discovers that Amy is seeing someone. Eventually Amy admits that she doesn't know what she agreed to, but continues to pretend she knew the rest of what he was talking about.

Garrett takes an interest in one of the local vendors, a woman selling craft beer. However, after tasting a sample of the beer, he is convinced that it is Bud Light, which she insists it isn't. This goes on for a while, until she eventually admits that it is. This is a mildly enjoyable story, but it didn't really have much to it.


None of the stories this week were all that good, but they weren't bad either. This was a pretty good episode, but really nothing special.
