NBC Renew/Cancel #11 [2017-18]: Final Predictions for Timeless, A.P. Bio, and More

Predictions for 5/7/18

Welcome to the final edition of NBC Renew/Cancel. One show is downgraded. Everything else stays the same.

Key
Show Title [Average Adults 18-49 Rating/Most recent rating]

Timeless [0.61/0.5] - The sophomore time-travel drama has been downgraded from tossup to likely cancellation. Aside from Champions and Taken, the series is the lowest-rated show on the peacock network. Even if Sony negotiates like they did last year, NBC simply has no use for Timeless. They gave it a second chance and it just didn't deliver from a commercial standpoint. Considering the events of last year, a renewal isn't out of the question. Nevertheless, I don't think the show is performing well enough to warrant a third season.

Good Girls [1.03/0.9] - The freshman drama was recently renewed for a second season. This was a correct prediction.

NBC Renew/Cancel #10 [2017-18]: ’Timeless’ is a Tossup, ’Good Girls’ is a Likely Renewal

Predictions for 4/22/18

One show is upgraded. Two shows are downgraded.

Key
Show Title [Average Adults 18-49 rating/Most recent rating]

Timeless [0.65/0.5] - I've decided to downgrade Timeless from likely renewal to a tossup. The drama started out with a respectable 0.8 rating for its second season premiere. But, the decent ratings did not last for long. The most recent episode garnered an anemic 0.5 and registered as a new series low. It is also one of the network's lowest-rated programs. On average, Timeless only performs better than Blindspot, Taken, and Champions. But, there is still hope for the series. According to Deadline, Sony made a deal with NBC to give them a license fee reduction, guaranteed profits, and international distribution rights if they renewed the show. It ended up working out and Timeless snatched up a second season. If Sony negotiates in the same manner, then Timeless definitely has a shot. For now, it's firmly a bubble show.

Good Girls [1.05/0.9] - Good Girls has been upgraded from tossup to likely renewal. While not a success in the 18-49 demographic, the series has been relatively stable. Additionally, the first eight episodes of Good Girls has the same average that Taken did through the same point in its first season. That series ended up receiving a second season. Finally, the middling ratings can be overlooked thanks to an international distribution deal with Netflix. While not a lock, Good Girls is a safe bet.

Champions [0.55/0.4] - Expectedly, Champions has been downgraded from likely cancellation to certain cancellation. The latest episode of the series garnered a dreadful 0.4 rating. Moreover, the fact that NBC is making the show air out of repeats proves that they've given up on it. To add insult to injury, the comedy is the second lowest-rated NBC series. It only beats Taken which was recently pulled off the schedule. This series is the dictionary definition of a dead show walking. It's a miracle that the peacock network is even letting it air its full episode order.

Taken [0.44/0.4] - NBC recently pulled Taken off the schedule. The remaining episodes of the movie-based drama are scheduled to air in the summer. I'll wait for an official announcement to move it to the 'canceled' section. Nevertheless, it's essentially dead.

NBC Renew/Cancel #9 [2017-18]: A Change in Heart on ’AP Bio’

Prediction for 3/16/18

One show is upgraded.

Key
Show Title [Average Adults 18-49 rating/Most recent rating]

AP Bio [0.88/0.9] - I have decided to move comedy AP Bio from likely cancellation to likely renewal. Initially, AP Bio looked like a textbook commercial failure. The episode that aired after the Olympics underwhelmed and it only managed a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic for the following three installments. But, the series miraculously shot up to a 0.9 rating for its latest outing. It held 90% of its Superstore lead-in and easily beat Champions. In all, this is a very respectable data point. It even outdid its series premiere rating. Additionally, NBC has a history of giving lower-rated comedies a second chance. Just last year, the peacock network renewed Great News and Trial & Error for second seasons. Keep in mind, both shows went as low as a 0.6 despite each having a strong lead-in from The Voice. If NBC was willing to renew two comedies that did worse in much better situations, then AP Bio should be a shoe-in for another season. Moreover, for the past couple years, NBC has always renewed at least one freshman comedy. Since Champions is performing poorly, AP Bio will likely be the one to make it out alive.

NBC Renew/Cancel #8 [2017-18]: ’Timeless’ Enters as a Likely Renewal

Predictions for 3/14/18

Three new shows enter the table. One show is downgraded.

Key
Show Title [Average Adults 18-49 rating/Most recent rating]

Timeless [0.8/0.8] - After being off the air for over a year, Timeless returned on Sunday with a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic. It had respectable retention of its lead-in and was only a tenth below its season finale. For a show that was almost canceled, this start is not too shabby. Keep in mind, the time-travel drama went as low as a 0.6 last year. If the peacock network was willing to renew it then, it's definitely in decent shape with this result. Furthermore, NBC's slate of new dramas has not delivered. All four shows (The Brave, True Crime, Good Girls, and Rise) have disappointed commercially despite receiving great timeslots. The lack of drama success strengthens Timeless's chances of survival. While the upcoming weeks will make Timeless's fate more clear, I don't expect it to leave our airwaves anytime soon.

Champions [0.7/0.7] - On series premiere night, the comedy mustered up a catastrophic 0.7 rating. It also lost 30% of its Will & Grace lead-in. There's simply no way to sugarcoat or spin this data. Since this is only a premiere, there's a strong chance that Champions will fall to a 0.6 or 0.5 rating for its next episode. Even if the peacock network decides to renew a freshman comedy, they'll probably go with AP Bio. It's evident that they prefer the latter since they gave it more exposure by airing it after the Olympics. As for Champions, it'll be lucky if it gets to air its entire episode order.

Rise [1.2/1.2] - Despite airing after the This is Us finale, Rise premiered to a tepid 1.2 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic. On the surface, that seems like a passable number. But, it ended up retaining just 43% of its lead-in. In all, this is an awful data point. It falls below the debuts of The Brave (1.3) and Good Girls (1.5). Given that both of those shows are in a tight spot, there's not much hope for Rise. Unless it performs well in the coming weeks, this drama will remain in cancellation territory.

Good Girls [1.26/1.0] - Initially, Good Girls seemed like it had potential. The 1.5 premiere was ahead of The Brave and it held up okay in week 2. Unfortunately, the drama collapsed to a 1.0 on Monday. This means that its week 3 drop (roughly 23%) was larger than its week 2 drop (roughly 13%). This data point also puts it below what The Brave did in its third outing (1.1). To top it off, the series lost nearly 60% of its lead-in from The Voice. Even with that said, the series is not entirely dead. Since Rise tanked on premiere night and NBC's other new dramas performed poorly, it has a shot at earning a second season. If a 1.0 rating is the floor for Good Girls, NBC may renew it for the sake of not canceling their entire freshman drama lineup. On account of that, Good Girls is downgraded from likely renewal to tossup. Nonetheless, it manages to stay out of cancellation territory for now.

NBC Renew/Cancel #7 [2017-18]: ’Good Girls’ Begins as a Likely Renewal

Predictions for 3/4/18

NBC continues to roll out new shows. I continue to make new predictions.

Key
Show Title [Average Adults 18-49 rating/Most recent rating]

Good Girls [1.5/1.5] - On Monday, the Good Girls premiere garnered a respectable 1.5 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic. This number was roughly 15% higher than The Brave's debut. The latter managed a weaker 1.3 for its series debut back in September. Additionally, it was just a tenth below year-ago Taken. Ultimately, the ratings for its second week will make it a bit more clear if the drama has any longevity. For now, this number puts it comfortably in renewal territory.

AP Bio [0.91/0.7] - Following a lackluster showing after the Olympics, AP Bio posted a 0.7 rating for both episodes that it aired on Thursday. It was down a tenth from its series premiere and looks a touch stronger than Great News. Nevertheless, these numbers still are not remotely impressive. While I'm keeping it in the cancellation section, NBC has been known to give struggling first season comedies a second chance. So, a renewal is not entirely out of the question.
