Blindspot Renewed by NBC for Final Season

NBC has renewed veteran drama Blindspot for a fifth and final season. The show started out as a strong performer, but it soon faded and was shipped to Fridays for season three. The ratings got lower in season four, and the show eventually sank to a 0.48 average. It was recently reported that the show was pulled from NBC's schedule for May sweeps before returning after the TV season ends. Despite the low ratings and being yanked from the schedule, the show will still be back next season for one last round. Jaime Alexander, Sullivan Stapleton, and Ashley Johnson star in the series.

NBC has renewed drama Blindspot for a fourth season. Jaimie Alexander, Sullivan Stapleton, Rob Brown, Audrey Esparza, and Ashley Johnson make up the main cast. Through 20 episodes, the crime drama has averaged a 0.63 rating in the lucrative 18-49 demographic. This is roughly 40% below than its average in season two. This was a correct prediction by the TV Ratings Guide.

NBC Renew/Cancel #0 [2017-18]: ’Will & Grace’ Already Renewed + Preseason Predictions

Predictions for 8/3/17

It's time for the first NBC Renew/Cancel post of the season. I'll be taking over this feature for the upcoming season. While the fall season hasn't started yet, NBC has already made some decisions. Also, I'll be making some preseason predictions for the veteran programs that will be returning in the fall.

Will & Grace - The classic sitcom hasn't even returned yet, but it's already been renewed for a 10th season. It's probably not a great idea considering not all revivals have been rating hits, but it's good to have it out of the way.

This Is Us - The drama has already been renewed for a third season, but unlike 'Will & Grace', this one deserves it.

The Dick Wolf Shows (Law & Order: SVU, Chicago PD, Chicago Fire) - All three shows are strong performers for the network and should have no problem returning. Unless they suddenly collapse in the ratings, they will stay in the 'certain renewal' column.

Superstore - The workplace comedy will be entering its third season and currently has 33 episodes. With two more 22-episode seasons, the series will have a decent amount of episodes for a syndication package. Even without that, 'Superstore' is a solid performer in the ratings. The second season averaged a 1.1 in the Adults 18-49 demographic. That made it the second-highest rated comedy on NBC. Like the Dick Wolf shows, I'll be keeping it in this category unless it pulls some alarmingly low numbers.

The Good Place - 'The Good Place' was NBC's highest-rated comedy last year, so why is it not a certain renewal? It's because high-concept serialized comedies tend to fall a lot in their second seasons. Fox's 'The Last Man on Earth' fell nearly 30% in its sophomore season while ABC's 'Galavant fell over 50%. But, that doesn't really mean that 'The Good Place' is in any danger. NBC is giving it an 'America's Got Talent' lead-in for the premiere and it never fell below a 1.0 in the ratings last year. It's still likely to return, but I'm being a bit cautious with this one.

Great News - This comedy was a flop. Period. Its ratings did not warrant a renewal, but it managed to come back anyway. This time, 'Great News' is getting a likely strong lead-in from 'Will & Grace'. I'm not sure that 'Will & Grace' will be big enough to boost the sophomore comedy or if 'Great News' will be compatible with it. This is why I'm keeping it in the "toss-up" category. The fact that it's getting a timeslot upgrade is keeping it from the 'cancellation' categories, but I'm still skeptical that it does well.

The Blacklist  - The drama will be entering its fifth season. The previous one fell over 30% in the ratings after a timeslot downgrade. This time, the series is getting another timeslot change and will air at 8 pm instead of 10. Considering that the series has fallen around 30% each season, I'm not expecting it to do very well. Ratings were just barely passable last season, so with another brutal drop, they'll be in disaster territory. Still, it was very steady towards the end of last season, so I think it's possible that it takes that late-season steadiness to a new timeslot.

Blindspot  - 'Blindspot' fell nearly 50% last year and will now be moving to Fridays. This means that the bar will be lower, but ratings will also likely fall lower. But, a move to Fridays isn't always a death blow. A move to Fridays helped ABC's 'Last Man Standing' and CBS's 'Hawaii Five-0' find new rating potential. I really don't know what to expect from this one, so it's a toss-up.

Blindspot Renewed By NBC

NBC

Looks like NBC will have a spot on the schedule for their sophomore drama after all. Blindspot has been renewed for a third season by the network. After posting strong ratings in its first season, the series fell over 40%, averaging just a 1.0 this season. That ended up being enough for NBC to invest in another season. Blindspot stars Jaimie Alexander who plays Alice in the series. Other individuals in the cast include Sullivan Stapleton, Rob Brown, and Audrey Esparza. Blindspot was created by Martin Gero and is distributed by Warner Bros. Television.

NBC Renew/Cancel: Preseason Predictions

Hello everyone, this is Luke, and it's that time of year again! The 2016-17 television season is right around the corner, so that means it's time for some preliminary renew/cancel predictions. Take a look below!

KEY

[F] - Indicates a Friday night show, which will typically have lower acceptable ratings
[O] - Indicates an NBC-owned show, which will typically have a higher chance at renewal

CANCELED
  • Grimm [F][O] *final season
NBC has announced a 6th and final season of Grimm, which will begin on January 6, 2017.

CERTAIN TO BE CANCELED
  • None
LIKELY TO BE CANCELED
  • Blindspot
  • The Good Place [O]
Blindspot was one of the highest-rated new shows last season, but toward the end of its run it started to dramatically slump in the ratings. It is now making a move from Mondays at 10 to Wednesdays at 8. Surviving this move is very questionable, but I'm predicting a likely cancellation for Blindspot as of right now.

The Good Place will be getting off to a good start on September 19 at 10, following the season premiere of NBC's saving grace, The Voice. However, once it moves to its regular timeslot on Thursdays at 8:30, it will face an enormous uphill battle. I just don't think The Good Place has enough going for it to make it up that hill--but its likely strong premiere could help it out more than I think. For now, it's a likely cancellation.

COULD GO EITHER WAY
  • Timeless
Many people are speculating that Timeless will premiere big, but I believe it will only have a mediocre premiere in the low 2s/high 1s. After that, I see it slumping down to the mid/low 1s for the rest of its run. The question is: will mid/low 1s be enough for renewal? It could go either way...

LIKELY TO BE RENEWED
  • The Blacklist
  • Superstore [O]
  • This Is Us
The Blacklist has always been a steady/mediocre performer for NBC, and it is now in its 4th season, so I think we will at least see a 5th and final season after this current one if its ratings slump even more. It is also going to be airing in one of NBC's notorious death slots, Thursdays at 10, but I think it will improve the ratings from last year's The Player, Shades of Blue, and Game of Silence.

Superstore could have easily been labeled as "could go either way," but if NBC needs to renew at least one comedy at the end of this season, Superstore is going to be that comedy. I don't see any of the upcoming new NBC comedies outperforming Superstore, so I believe this workplace comedy is likely to be safe for next season.

This Is Us is quite possibly the most anticipated new show of the 2016-17 season, so I feel as if a big premiere is almost inevitable (hence the word "almost," see Scream Queens from last season). Even if This Is Us falls a lot from its big premiere, I feel as if its ratings will still be enough to make it to next season. It would have to fall DRASTICALLY in order to be canceled, and I don't think it will fall nearly that low.

CERTAIN TO BE RENEWED
  • Chicago Fire [O]
  • Chicago Med [O]
  • Chicago P.D. [O]
  • Law & Order: SVU [O]
Chicago Fire, Med, and P.D. have all become steady players for NBC and will certainly be getting a renewal. Law & Order: SVU will also certainly get a renewal, for it is nearly entering its 20th season and NBC isn't going to stop this show from achieving that huge milestone when it is this close. See you next season to all of Dick Wolf's shows.
