The Bullpen Season 4 Episode 17: Win and Lose

MANNY, FELIX, ACE, ROBERT, DEVIN, LORENZO, HARRY, and CHARLES are all in the dugout of an Indianapolis Primitives home game.

MANNY
Alright, listen up everyone.

DEVIN
To what?

ACE
Probably the music in the background. Very catchy!

FELIX
You kidding? That song sucks.

LORENZO

I think he’s talking about listening to…actually I don’t know, why did I start talking?

FELIX
I wonder that a lot.

MANNY
I meant listen to me. I thought that’d be obvious.

ROBERT
I’m listening!

MANNY
Well one person is better than none I guess.

ROBERT
Depends on what you’re about to say.

MANNY

The general manager of the team called.

FELIX
Wait—that guy actually called YOU?

MANNY
You kidding? No way! He called Jason, who’s about to tell you more about it.

CHARLES
Since when was Jason here?

JASON

The whole time. Seriously guys?

HARRY
I noticed you, Jason.

JASON

Thank you. Now, as you know the TV ratings for the Primitives games lately really haven’t been all that good. But we had a nice viral moment online when Lorenzo pitched the ninth. The goal is to turn those viral moments into ratings. So we’re going to start operating like a normal team. You know, one that takes their starting pitchers out after five to seven innings and then the bullpen comes in to try to finish off the game.

MANNY
We’ve been over this, we’re not going to throw the game for the Primitives.

JASON
It’s not throwing the game, Lorenzo didn’t give up any runs when he pitched! I mean, he would’ve if our fielders didn’t operate like they were protecting a no hitter, but still. Plus, the Primitives have already clinched the top seed in the playoffs. We have nothing to lose.

DEVIN
I’m skeptical.

JASON
Devin, you’re on the 40-man roster, you have nothing to lose. And remember what happened with Kurt, Robert? Maybe Felix too can end up as a starter again.

FELIX
Highly doubt it but I’ll take pitching over not pitching.

LORENZO

I too remember what happened with Kurt! You must not have asked because you assumed I did.

JASON
No, actually I assumed you didn’t.

HARRY

Not a bad idea if you ask me. One of you in the game means less people in the bullpen at once means less food for Harry to cook at once.

ACE
Don’t ever refer to yourself in the first person again. Also why does your voice sound different?

HARRY

I was trying to sound like Manny and pretend he was the one bringing up the point but I guess it didn’t work.

ROBERT

So Jason, when are we pitching?

JASON

It’s been nearly two years since I last coached in the bullpen. I don’t know what’s changed with your pitching style, Robert.

ROBERT
Absolutely nothing has changed.

JASON
Well, technically you’re our closer now.

MANNY

Lorenzo you take the 6th inning. Ace gets the 7th, Devin the 8th, and Robert the 9th. My decision is final. Wow, it feels good to have authority again.

FELIX
What about me?

MANNY
Eh.

CHARLES
And just to be certain, I’m not allowed to pitch, right?

MANNY
No clue. Now I’m gonna head on out, I don’t want to see this disaster take place that I created.

HARRY
Good move. You’re the manager, not the President.

JASON

And that’s my cue to leave. And Lorenzo, the sixth inning is starting. I’d take the mound if I were you.

LORENZO

You can take the mound if you’d like.

JASON
Impossible. Just be yourself and you should be fine. Not good, but fine.

LORENZO
I beg to differ. Here goes nothing!

LORENZO runs to the mound. He is visibly tired by the time he gets there and struggles to get the ball over the plate. LORENZO turns around and slowly walks back to the bullpen.

ROBERT
What are you doing, nobody took you out of the game!
