'The Whispers' Canceled by ABC

ABC has canceled its freshman summer sci-fi series.

On Twitter, a fan approached series star Milo Ventimiglia, asking, "and what about the season 2 ? Any news ??," to which Ventimiglia responded, "Sadly not happening darlin."

Summer Renew/Cancel Predictions - July 24: Extant Will Likely be Canceled

Hi! In case this is your first time reading my summer renew/cancel predictions post, I'm Hunter and I will be posting these predictions each weekend this summer, covering the summer shows on the five major broadcast networks. This is week six, and this week Welcome to Sweden premiered its second season on NBC. Also, this week I have to make a correction; I found out last weekend that Wayward Pines was canceled, which had been quietly revealed last week on Thursday when the tenth and final episode of the season was promoted as the "series finale". I apologize for the error, this week it will be corrected, and Wayward Pines will be in the "fate decided" category. I predicted this cancelation correctly, as in my July 10th post I had put it in the "will likely be canceled" category. That's enough talking for now, here are the summer shows divided into categories, and then my in-detail thoughts on a few of them. Enjoy!

CBS was probably hoping that with the timeslot upgrade, Extant's ratings would improve. They did, but I doubt that 0.1 more was good enough. Extant was only able to notch a 0.7 airing after Big Brother, which got a 1.8. It's looking like even that deal with Amazon won't save Extant now. Extant will soon be extinct.

Welcome to Sweden premiered to miserable ratings. Last year, it easily got renewed with okay ratings, a renewal in Sweden, and the Poehler name. This year, the ratings are half what they were last year, and there has been no news yet about a renewal in Sweden, where the show was not as big in season two as it was in season one. It's not looking good for Welcome to Sweden.

While Extant is doing poorly, all hope is far from lost for scripted programming in CBS summers. Zoo was flat at 1.0 this week and Under the Dome went up to 1.0. Also, CBS obviously is satisfied, as they plan on continuing scripted programming during the summer with the addition of new political sci-fi dramedy BrainDead. This is a sign that at least one of Under the Dome and Zoo are for sure coming back, and probably both.

ABC summers' scripted programming is looking a lot worse than CBS'. While Thursday is a mess, The Whispers is also not looking good. This week it went back down to 0.8, and that was when I decided to move it to "certain to be canceled". What made The Whispers' fate even more certain though is when Lily Rabe, the series' star, got casted in American Horror Story. There is absolutely no chance now that The Whispers will be back for season two.

Speaking of ABC Thursdays, I have moved The Astronaut Wives Club to "certain to be canceled" after this week's 0.6 rating. Also, this Thursday Mistresses fell again to a 0.7, while Rookie Blue rose to a 0.8. While this makes me want to switch the two shows on here, for now they will stay put at "toss-up" and "will likely be canceled" respectively. Don't be surprised if either show moves in the near future though.

Right now almost every show has reached certainty. Only four shows, Extant, Rookie Blue, Welcome to Sweden, and Mistresses, have not. Next week, at least one of those shows will move somewhere. Come back next week to see what moves where!

Summer Renew/Cancel Predictions - July 17: Wayward Pines is Certain to be Canceled

In case this is your first time reading my summer renew/cancel predictions post, I'm Hunter and I will be posting these predictions each weekend this summer, covering the summer shows on the five major broadcast networks. This is week five, and while there was no renew/cancel news this week, nor were there any series or season premieres, this was still an interesting TV week. This week, NBC decided to move the already-renewed Aquarius and the already-canceled Hannibal to Saturdays, following terrible ratings from both (0.5 for the former, 0.4 for the latter) last Thursday. Also, CBS moved second-season drama Extant from 10:00 to 9:00 following Wednesday's low-rated episode, giving Extant a lead-in of Big Brother instead of Criminal Minds reruns. I will discuss what I think these moves mean below, in addition to other things. So, now, here are the summer shows divided into categories, and then my in-detail thoughts on a few of them. Enjoy!

After falling even farther this week to a 0.9, I believe that Wayward Pines is certain to be canceled. The chances that FOX will renew the show are slim, despite the great DVR numbers. Live viewing is what matters most, Wayward Pines' episode next week will most likely be its very last.

When they are airing other countries' shows, networks usually allow the ratings to fall farther than other shows because it is cheep for them to air a season of a show that has already been ordered. However, Motive was canceled by ABC last summer, despite getting a third season in Canada, and since Rookie Blue's ratings this season are much lower than Motive's last season, I predict that it is likely to be canceled. After premiering to a 0.6, the show has risen to a 0.7, but it has since remained there. I don't know whether or not another season of Rookie Blue will be made, but I doubt that it will be aired on ABC in the US.

Extant reached a new low this week, 0.6. CBS then decided to move Extant to the 9:00 hour. This indicates two things. The first is 0.6s are probably not renewable numbers for Under the Dome or Extant, and the second is that CBS really wants Extant to survive. If Extant is able to get mostly 0.8 and above at 9:00, I expect that it will be back. Otherwise, it could end up getting canceled.

NBC's decision to move its Thursday night scripted programs to Saturday night wasn't surprising in the case of Hannibal, which had recently gotten canceled and got a 0.4 rating in its last Thursday airing. However, it was more surprising for Aquarius, which was doing slightly better and had gotten renewed. Many people are wondering if this indicates that NBC may reverse their decision to renew Aquarius. It's unlikely, in my opinion, but with NBC, anything's possible. But, what it does indicate is that season two of Aquarius will probably air on Saturdays, if not entirely online.

I was considering moving both Under the Dome and Zoo to certain to be renewed at the beginning of the week. However, their ratings this week made me want to wait probably one more week. Both series fell two tenths this week. If they are more stable next week, I will likely upgrade them. I was also planning on moving The Whispers down this week. If next week The Whispers gets 0.8 or below, I'm moving it.

The Astronaut Wives Club went back up to a 0.9 this week. If that proves to not be a fluke, I will move it back up to toss-up next week. ABC Thursdays are proving to be the hardest shows to predict this summer.

Next week, I will have my first prediction for Welcome to Sweden. I had hoped that this week the "certain to be renewed" section wouldn't be empty, but it still is. However, next week it is very likely that either Under the Dome, Zoo, or both could end up there. You'll have to come back next week to see!

Summer Renew/Cancel Predictions - June 26: The Whispers Will Likely be Renewed

In case this is your first time reading my summer renew/cancel predictions post, I'm Hunter and I will be posting these predictions each weekend this summer, covering the summer shows on the five major broadcast networks. It's week two of my summer predictions and a lot has happened this week. Last night Under the Dome aired its season three premiere and Rookie Blue aired its season six premiere. Also, NBC announced a renewal and a cancelation. The cancelation came first on Monday, when Hannibal was canceled three episodes into its third season, which I accurately predicted. Hannibal will continue to air the remainder of its season in its current timeslot. On Thursday, NBC renewed Aquarius for a second season. This was very surprising, considering how it performs only slightly better than Hannibal, and Hannibal has advantages by being in its third season and being an international co-production. I incorrectly predicted Aquarius's fate, labeling it certain to be canceled. The reason for the renewal was most likely how well it performed with online viewership (the entire season of Aquarius was put online from the beginning), something that us ordinary people do not know the numbers of, and something that I didn't expect to be a factor. But, that's enough talking for the moment, here are the summer shows divided into categories and then my in-detail thoughts on a few of them. Enjoy!

I don't like to move a show all the way from "will likely be canceled" to "will likely be renewed" in one week. However, The Whispers is in an odd situation where it has forced me to do that. It would be a toss-up this week due to the slight uptick in the ratings when it originally looked to be a show that was collapsing. But, this week it came to my attention that The Whispers needs to be renewed by June 30th if it is going to be renewed. That is Tuesday. According to what I read, ABC has been trying to extend the actors' contracts past June 30th, but has so far been unsuccessful. This means that after one more episode, ABC will need to decide what it wants to do with The Whispers. Due to the slight uptick and the fact that it is produced by ABC Studios, I predict a renewal. The ratings of Monday's episode could be important though. If the show falls to 0.7 or lower next week, I will change my mind (though I won't get the chance to write another one of these until after the decision has been made). If the ratings stay at 0.8 or higher, I think it will get a second season. If later on in the season it does poorly, ABC can make season two shorter and/or give it a bad timeslot.

Summer 2013's ratings monster Under the Dome returned for its third season last night, premiering at a weak 1.3 rating. While this rating is far from impressive, Under the Dome should still be able to get a renewal. The reason for this is Amazon. Amazon pays to stream CBS's summer dramas just days after they air. Last year, new series Extant premiered to a 1.6, and got a 1.5 the following week, but in the eleven episodes after that got no higher than a 1.2. However, Extant was still renewed. If Amazon is paying as much for Under the Dome this year as they paid for Extant last year, then with a 1.3 rating Under the Dome should still be able to get renewed.

Last night also had a second season premiere, ABC's Rookie Blue. In its sixth season, Rookie Blue premiered to only a 0.6, a series low. Despite this very low rating, I am still considering it to be a toss-up. Rookie Blue is a Canadian show, and therefore a lot cheaper than an American one. However, my toss-up rating is still generous, but it's only week one, it can rebound. But if next week's rating isn't higher, I may have to adjust my prediction. But, do remember, Rookie Blue can still be renewed and air in Canada if ABC cancels it.

Next week, I will have my first predictions for CBS's Extant and Zoo. Also, next week I plan on adjusting my prediction for Wayward Pines.

Summer Renew/Cancel Predictions - June 19: A.D.: The Bible Continues is Certain to be Canceled

Hi! I'm Hunter (I'm HV in the comments), and this is my first renew/cancel prediction post, which I hope to post each weekend this summer. Many websites do this kind of thing during the regular season, but it is hard to guess if the shows that you are watching this summer is going to get renewed or canceled. These predictions will cover all scripted summer shows on the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CW). Each post will include those shows that have aired at least one episode this summer put into one of five categories, unless they have already been renewed or canceled. These five categories are: Certain to be Canceled, Will Likely be Canceled, Toss-Up, Will Likely be Renewed, and Certain to be Renewed. After this, I will talk about a few shows and go more in depth about their chances. I hope you enjoy these posts!

In May, leading up to the network upfronts, the networks renewed or canceled most of their shows that were currently airing. However, NBC did not renew or cancel A.D.: The Bible Continues or American Odyssey, despite the fact that they both premiered at the beginning of April. Both shows have almost finished their runs now, A.D. has one more episode left, while Odyssey has two. American Odyssey has been an obvious cancelation from early on. A.D.: The Bible Continues started out looking like it would surely be renewed. However, after a couple of weeks, the ratings dropped. It now has low ratings, and it appears to be a high-cost show, which makes it a certain cancelation as well.

Hannibal returned for season three this summer. The critically acclaimed show premiered in the late spring in 2013 and went into the summer. Season two aired in the winter/spring of 2014 on Fridays. For season three, it returned to Thursdays and is airing completely during the summer. The show is inexpensive, due to being an international co-production, which is the reason that it has lasted as long as it has so far. Ratings for season three have fallen though, and it might be low enough for NBC to cancel it. However, I am sure that Hannibal will get a forth season, since Amazon has said that they plan on picking up the show if NBC cancels it, so if you are a fan of the show, you don't need to worry.

Wayward Pines was an unexpected surprise this summer. Despite premiering to a 1.0, it rose to 1.2 in week two, and has gotten that rating every week except one, where it got a 1.1. There are five more episodes remaining, and without basketball as competition, it could rise even farther. It's hard to say whether it will be renewed or canceled at this point though, because we don't know what kind of ratings FOX is looking for. Last summer, FOX aired two scripted shows, 24: Live Another Day and Gang Related. Gang Related did worse than Wayward Pines is doing this season, and was canceled. FOX was pleased with the ratings that 24 got, shown by how they are doing something similar with The X-Files and plan on making another 24 series. Last summer, 24 did better than Pines is doing this season. Will Wayward Pines be renewed or canceled? We're going to have to wait and see.

The Astronaut Wives Club premiered last night. It has been advertised as a "10-episode event" (Aquarius and Wayward Pines are also both being advertised as an event series), but does that mean it can't be renewed? Advertising the series as an "event" implies that it is a mini-series, but really, it usually means that it can be renewed, but if it doesn't do well, we will probably hear that it was only meant to go one season anyway. It premiered to a 1.1, and two seasons ago Mistresses premiered to a 1.2, and Mistresses aired after The Bachelorette, while The Astronaut Wives Club has to air at 8:00. Right now, its chances are looking good. But, remember, there are nine more weeks left of The Astronaut Wives Club, and things can change quickly.
