NBC Renew/Cancel Watch: 'Shades of Blue' Likely to be Renewed

Hello everyone, it's Luke! Welcome to the third NBC Renew/Cancel Watch of 2016! Check out my predictions below and look out for a very interesting poll at the bottom of the page! It has been a hot topic lately and I encourage all of you to discuss it in the comments!

KEY
  • Show title (Average adults 18-49 rating to the nearest tenth / Most recent rating)
[F] - Indicates a Friday night show, which will typically have lower-than-average ratings

CANCELED
  • Heroes Reborn (1.3 / 1.0)
  • The Player (0.8 / 0.8)
  • Truth Be Told (0.6 / 0.4) [F]
CERTAIN TO BE CANCELED
  • NONE
LIKELY TO BE CANCELED
  • The Mysteries of Laura (1.1 / 1.2)
  • Undateable (0.8 / 0.8) [F]
ON THE BUBBLE
  • Grimm (0.9 / 0.9) [F]
  • Telenovela (1.1 / 1.1)
LIKELY TO BE RENEWED
  • Shades of Blue (1.5 / 1.4)
  • Superstore (1.6 / 1.7)
CERTAIN TO BE RENEWED
  • Chicago Med (1.9 / 1.6)
  • Law & Order: SVU (1.7 / 1.7)
RENEWED
  • The Blacklist (1.5 / 1.6)
  • Blindspot (2.3 / 1.9)
  • Chicago Fire (1.9 / 1.8)
  • Chicago P.D. (1.6 / 1.5)

ANALYSIS

Superstore: With a strong 1.7 rating on Monday, up from the 1.5 rating of the previous airing, there is now no question that Superstore is a likely renewal. Be ready to see this freshman sitcom on NBC's 2016/2017 schedule! The real question is, however, where are they going to put it?

Telenovela: Telenovela rose up to a 1.1 rating this Monday, which I think is enough for it to remain on the bubble. NBC is still airing a good amount of ads for this show, which shows me they still have faith in it, so don't count on a cancellation just yet.

Shades of Blue: Shades of Blue also rose this week, up to a 1.4 from last week's 1.3 rating. I don't like leaving shows on the bubble for too long, so I decided to finally make a decision on this show. I am labeling Shades as "likely to be renewed" FOR NOW, but note that this could easily change once How to Get Away with Murder returns on February 11. (Both shows share the same time slot and, most likely, a good amount of the same audience).

NBC Renew/Cancel Watch: 'Superstore' Likely to be Renewed

Hello everyone, it's Luke Lambright! Welcome to the NBC Renew/Cancel Watch! Go ahead and take a look at my predictions for all of NBC's shows, including new shows Superstore, Telenovela, and Shades of Blue.

KEY
  • Show title (Average adults 18-49 rating to the nearest tenth)
[F] - Indicates a Friday-night show, which will typically have lower than average ratings

CANCELED
  • Heroes Reborn (1.3)
  • The Player (0.8)
  • Truth Be Told (0.6) [F]
CERTAIN TO BE CANCELED
  • NONE
LIKELY TO BE CANCELED
  • The Mysteries of Laura (1.1)
  • Undateable (0.8) [F]
ON THE BUBBLE
  • Grimm (0.9) [F]
  • Shades of Blue (1.6)
  • Telenovela (1.1)
LIKELY TO BE RENEWED
  • Superstore (1.6)
CERTAIN TO BE RENEWED
  • Chicago Med (2.0)
  • Law & Order: SVU (1.7)
RENEWED
  • The Blacklist (1.5)
  • Blindspot (2.3)
  • Chicago Fire (1.9)
  • Chicago P.D. (1.6)

ANALYSIS

Superstore: Superstore returned down to a 1.5 this Monday, but that is still a good enough rating to warrant a likely renewal, ESPECIALLY for an NBC comedy. Expect to see Superstore next season.

Telenovela: Telenovela followed Superstore with a 1.0 rating this Monday, which should be enough to move it down to "likely to be canceled." However, I am waiting for this week's numbers to see if it was impacted at all by the college football national championship and if it can rebound enough to stay in bubble territory. If it can get a 1.2 or above, it will stay on the bubble.

Shades of Blue: Jennifer Lopez's drama fell to a 1.3 rating from last week's 1.8 premiere rating. Although this is a huge fall, I'm going to keep Shades on the bubble for a little more time because this rating is still very good for NBC's Thursday night death slot.

ANALYSIS

Superstore: With a strong 1.8 rating this Monday for its time slot premiere, I have decided to move up 'Superstore' from "on the bubble" to "likely to be renewed." Although this freshman comedy has only aired a few times, it already shows signs of being NBC's strongest comedy in a long time. Also, the network is now airing repeats of the show every Friday at 8:30, so it definitely seems as if they actually care about 'Superstore.' You will likely be seeing this show next season.

Telenovela: 'Telenovela' followed 'Superstore' with a mediocre 1.3 rating on Monday, which was actually enough for me to move this show from "likely to be canceled" to "on the bubble." I need more time to watch this show in its current time slot to determine its likely fate, so stay tuned in the upcoming weeks.

Shades of Blue: This Jennifer Lopez-led drama shocked all when it debuted to a 1.8 rating in NBC's notorious Thursday nights at 10 death slot, but since only one episode has aired, I am leaving 'Shades of Blue' on the bubble until I see the numbers for at least one or two more airings.

Undateable: With the above-average performances of 'Superstore' and 'Telenovela' for NBC comedies, the fate of veteran 'Undateable' isn't looking too bright anymore. That is why I have decided to move it down from "on the bubble" to "likely to be canceled." It is not "certain" because there is always a chance the ratings of 'Superstore' and 'Telenovela' plummet, but until then, 'Undateable' will have to sit in "likely cancellation" territory.

Heroes: Reborn Canceled by NBC

The Ratings Junkie Wednesday, January 13, 2016
Heroes: Reborn Canceled by NBC
NBC
Per TV Line, Heroes: Reborn will not be returning next season. It premiered to a 2.1 A18-49 rating, but by the end of its run lost half its audience and finished with just a 1.33 average.

This news does not come to much surprise to The TV Ratings Guide, who had it predicted as a likely cancelation. The infamous TVGrimReaper abstained from this, while the Cancel Bear on TVbytheNumbers also predicted a cancelation.

As of now, The TV Ratings Guide is a perfect 7-0 with its scripted NBC renew/cancel predictions. To refresh:

Renewed: The Blackish, Blindspot, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD
Canceled: Heroes: Reborn, The Player, Truth be Told
