NBC's rescue of Magnum PI will be short lived. After only one season and twenty episodes on the network, the series will come to an end - likely for good this time. The show aired four seasons on CBS before its unceremonious cancellation by the Tiffany Network in May 2022, and was saved the next month by NBC, the network owned by Magnum PI production company Universal. Though the show performed decently for CBS, it saw a large decline in its NBC move, averaging 0.27 in its new time slot on Sunday nights, a night that has yielded little success for NBC in recent seasons. The network initially picked up the series for two seasons of ten episodes each, though this was later revised to one, twenty-episode fifth season that was to be split in two halves. NBC has not yet announced where they will air the second half, leaving it off their initial fall 2023 schedule. As production finished on the episodes months ago, the show will likely be one of the few on NBC that has episodes ready for the 2023-24 season as the WGA strike continues and leaves productions halted, potentially leaving it as an option to air in the fall. Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton and Amy Hill starred in the series, a reboot of the 1980s Tom Selleck series of the same name.
Magnum PI Saved by NBC
NBC has come to the rescue of Magnum PI. The procedural drama was canceled in May by CBS, despite decent and steady ratings over the course of its run. However, that will not prove to be the end of the line, with a rumored NBC pickup of the series ultimately proving to be true. NBC parent company Universal produces the series, which was one of the highest-rated series to be canceled this season. The NBC pickup is for two seasons, to run for a total of twenty episodes. Magnum PI is the first canceled series to have been rescued this season, and with contracts for network shows having expired on June 30, may ultimately be the only. Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton and Amy Hill all star in the series and are expected to return after the move to NBC.
