The Unicorn Canceled by CBS

The Unicorn has gone extinct, as CBS has canceled the comedy series after two seasons. The series was reporedly an internal favorite at CBS, but its ratings were simply too abysmal to justify another season. It was the third lowest-rated show on CBS, ahead of only SWAT and Clarice, and averaged a 0.45 in the 18-49 demo in season two. It had a shortened second season and often aired episodes behind repeats, and didn't seem to have much going for it. The series, which starred Walton Goggins, Michaela Watkins, Rob Corddry, Omar Miller and Maya Lynne Robinson, ran for thirty-one episodes over its two seasons. Thursday TV Ratings 3/18/21: The Unicorn Ends Down, Hell’s Kitchen, Call Me Kat and Last Man Standing Rise, Grey’s Anatomy Steady Behind Down Station 19 (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: ABC began their night in rough fashion as 'Station 19' (0.7) lost two-tenths from its week-ago return. 'Grey's Anatomy' (0.9) held steady from there while 'A Million Little Things' (0.5) managed to pick up a tenth. Fox had a surprisingly strong evening as 'Hell's Kitchen' (0.8) and 'Call Me Kat' (0.6) each rose by two-tenths, both shows reaching heights they haven't seen since January. This resurgence comes just a week after they fell to nasty, new lows (0.6/0.4). 'Last Man Standing' (0.5) inched up at the end of the lineup. On NBC, 'Superstore' (0.4) perked up slightly after its awful performance from last week (0.35), with its series finale right around the corner. The seasoned comedy was followed by a repeat of itself (0.3), an 'SVU' encore (0.3), and a rising 'Dateline' (0.4). After being preempted last week, CBS's 'The Unicorn' (0.4/0.4) closed out its second season with a one-hour finale. The struggling sitcom shed two-tenths from its previous installment but was able to avoid hitting a new low. 'Unicorn' was surrounded by reruns of 'Young Sheldon' (0.5/0.5) and 'Clarice' (0.2). 'Walker' (0.3) gained a tenth on the CW as 'Legacies' (0.1) remained even.

Thursday TV Ratings 3/11/21: Grey’s Anatomy Slips Below 1.0 for the First Time, Young Sheldon, Superstore & Call Me Kat Among Many Shows Down Behind President Biden Address (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: In theory, airing an address by President Biden in the 8pm slot should give the programs after it a sizable boost in the ratings. That idea didn't hold any water last night as most shows struggled to keep it together. ABC led the way with the returns of 'Station 19' (0.8), 'Grey's Anatomy' (0.8), and 'A Million Little Things' (0.4). When compared to their winter finales, 'Little Things' was down by one-tenth, 'Station' down by two, and 'Grey's' down by three. CBS's sitcom block also had a rough time as 'Young Sheldon' (0.7) and 'Mom' (0.5) each shed two-tenths. In-between the two, 'B Positive' (0.6) only dropped by one. 'Clarice' (0.3) found itself hitting a new low in the 10pm hour. 

On NBC, 'Superstore' (0.3) fell into disastrous territory, posting its lowest rating yet. A repeat of 'SVU' (0.3) and an abysmal 'Dateline' original (0.2) followed suit. Over on Fox, 'Hell's Kitchen' (0.6) and 'Call Me Kat' (0.4) each inched down, but 'Last Man Standing' (0.5) actually managed to rise. 'Last Man' was the only show on one of the big 4 networks to make any significant gain, garnering its strongest rating since early January. Unaffected by political matters as usual, The CW's 'Walker' (0.3) rose a tenth while 'Legacies' (0.1) was flat. The Biden address itself scored a 0.8 rating on ABC and CBS, putting the two networks in a virtual tie. NBC and Fox also matched each other by posting identical 0.5 ratings.

Thursday TV Ratings 3/4/21: Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and The Chase End Down, Superstore Down in Return to 8, Mom, The Unicorn and Clarice Steady Behind Down B Positive (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: The 8-episode run of 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' (0.7) ended with a new series low on ABC, down a tenth from last week's broadcast. 'Wheel' initially found itself in strong territory but never rose above the 1.0 threshold past early January. The two-hour finale of 'The Chase' (0.5/0.4) followed right after, with the game show garnering its lowest rating yet at 9 and then hitting another new low at 10. Needless to say, both programs left a particularly dreadful final impression. CBS suffered some minor slippage with 'Young Sheldon' (0.9) and 'B Positive' (0.6) but 'Mom' (0.7), 'The Unicorn' (0.5), and 'Clarice' (0.4) all tied their previous showings. With 'Mr. Mayor' out of the way, NBC's 'Superstore' (0.4) ticked down in its return to the 8pm hour. The workplace sitcom has just 4 episodes left before it leaves the airwaves for good. Later in the night, 'Dateline' (0.4) held even with what its week-ago repeat posted in the slot. Meager reruns of 'Young Rock' (0.2) and 'SVU' (0.3) separated the two originals. Fox was steady as usual with 'Hell's Kitchen' (0.7), 'Call Me Kat' (0.5), and 'Last Man Standing' (0.4). 'Kat' has now posted its 5th-straight 0.5 rating. The CW had encores of 'Walker' (0.1) and 'Legacies' (0.0).

Thursday TV Ratings 2/18/21: Law & Order: SVU Steady After Break, Mom Slips After Cancellation, Clarice and The Hustler Also Tick Down (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: A week after their triumphant return, CBS was down across the board with 'Young Sheldon' (0.8), 'B Positive' (0.6), recently-canceled 'Mom' (0.6), 'The Unicorn' (0.4), and 10pm drama 'Clarice' (0.4). 'Unicorn' shed two-tenths while all the other programs were down a tenth. On ABC, 'The Hustler' (0.4) inched down while 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' (0.8) and 'The Chase' (0.6) were flat. On NBC, 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.7) held even after a month-long break and led into the first installment of 'Dateline' multi-part crime drama 'The Widower' (0.5). The latter was a good bit above the 0.34 that 'Dateline' itself posted a week ago. Earlier in the night, 'Mr. Mayor' posted its third-straight 0.5 rating and was followed by a 'Young Rock' encore (0.3). Fox was steady all-around with 'Hell's Kitchen' (0.7), 'Call Me Kat' (0.5), and 'Last Man Standing' (0.4). The CW's 'Walker' (0.2) matched its previous episode but 'Legacies' (0.1) lost a tick.
