How’d They Do? Evaluating The Ratings of Stumptown, For Life, and Emergence

The Ratings Junkie Saturday, June 13, 2020

Welcome to this edition of How’d They Do?. The ratings for Stumptown, For Life, and Emergence are here. Note that this does not include cancelations, but rather shows that were announce to be ending ahead of time.

Credit for the ratings go to Programming Insider. Any missing numbers is a result of them not being reported.

Emergence Canceled After a Single Season

ABC has axed fall sci-fi drama Emergence after a single season. The series was one of the lowest-rated scripted shows on ABC, tied with fellow fall freshman Stumptown, with only a 0.49 average. The show was rescued by ABC in the pilot stage after NBC rejected it, though the executives' enjoyment of the show wasn't enough to save it. Emergence lasted thirteen episodes and wrapped on January 28. Allison Tolman, Clancy Brown, Alexa Swinton and Donald Faison lead the series' cast. This was a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

The Baker & The Beauty: Expectations for ABC's newest scripted series weren't very high. It had an untested lead-in that's a part of a franchise known for not helping out the shows airing behind it. It was premiering late in the season. It wasn't promoted as heavily as some of ABC's other entries. The 0.5 it pulled on premiere night wasn't a terrible surprise. It is, however, a pretty terrible datapoint. It's likely to drop further. It tied the premiere rating for a Saturday repeat, but with a huge (for Saturday) lead-in, which doesn't really tell us much about the genuine interest in the show from those viewers. Even if it manages to hold steady in week two, I find it hard to believe that it will avoid 0.4s (or even 0.3s when it airs behind repeats) for the entire season. I can't imagine a path to renewal for the show, even if I don't think it's ABC most likely cancellation at the moment. It starts out as a LIKELY CANCELLATION.
