NBC Renew/Cancel: 'Trial & Error' Likely to be Canceled

Hello everyone! This semester has been ridiculously busy for me, so that is why you haven't seen a post from me in a while. Because of this, this article will be the last from me for about a month. Someone else will be taking over for the time being. However, you will see me again in early May for some final NBC predictions!

KEY
  • Show title (Average adults 18-49 rating / Most recent rating)

CANCELED
  • Grimm (0.8 / 0.9) [Final season]
Grimm ended its six-year run on NBC with a 0.9 rating, a season high for the show. Grimm was a solid Friday night player for NBC and it is truly sad to see this show end.

CERTAIN TO BE CANCELED
  • Emerald City (0.7 / 0.7)
  • Powerless (0.7 / 0.6)
  • Timeless (1.1 / 0.9)
Powerless has been pulled multiple times on NBC's schedule in favor of Trial & Error repeats, so this show is surely dead at this point.

LIKELY TO BE CANCELED
  • The Blacklist: Redemption (0.8 / 0.7)
  • Blindspot (1.1 / 0.9)
  • Taken (1.1 / 0.8)
  • Trial & Error (1.0 / 0.7)
Although Blindspot has garnered fairly consistent ratings in the past few weeks, only a few tenths below the ratings of SVU and P.D., I still don't believe NBC will want to keep this show around for two more years (see: the syndication rule). I believe Jane Doe and friends will be goners come early May.

Taken has now been consistently fractional following 2.0+ airings of The Voice. Despite this show being a cheap co-production, the peacock network simply does not need it for next season. The small production price is the ONLY reason it is not labeled as "certain to be canceled."

Trial & Error is another show that SHOULD be labeled as "certain to be canceled," but isn't. Its ratings have been very underwhelming, considering NBC premiered it behind a huge finale of This Is Us and is now giving it the lead-in of The Voice. However, it is clear that NBC really cares about the show and wants it to work--it is still getting fair promotion and the network has been airing repeats of T&E Thursday at 8:30 instead of original episodes of Powerless. I don't think that this show will be returning, but it is definitely not a certain cancellation.

COULD GO EITHER WAY
  • None
LIKELY TO BE RENEWED
  • The Blacklist (1.1 / 0.9)
  • Chicago Justice (1.2 / 1.0)
Chicago Justice has definitely been a bit underwhelming. It has already been fractional one time, for its 7th episode, and the viewers reactions to the show have been VERY mixed so far. I don't believe this is enough for it to be canceled, but is definitely not a sure bet for renewal. I expect it to be used on Fridays next season, and if it doesn't gain some traction/stability there, then it will probably be axed next season.

CERTAIN TO BE RENEWED
  • Chicago Fire (1.6 / 1.3)
  • Chicago Med (1.3 / 1.0)
  • Chicago P.D. (1.4 / 1.3)
  • Law & Order: SVU (1.4 / 1.2)
These four Dick Wolf shows have seen their ratings plummet very significantly in the past few weeks, but are still solid performers for NBC and are not in any danger of cancellation. Don't sweat over the fate of these four shows.

RENEWED
  • The Good Place (1.3 / 1.1)
  • Shades of Blue (0.8 / 0.7)
  • Superstore (1.2 / 0.8)
  • This Is Us (2.7 / 3.4) [Renewed for two seasons]
