Bar Exam Season 6 Episode 10: Lawyers/Episode 11: Condemnation

LORENZO is in his home, still on house arrest. LINCOLN, REAGAN, MADISON, CHASE, SAM, and ADAM enter for their legal meeting with LORENZO.

MADISON
Alright Lorenzo, let's get down to business.

LORENZO
Wait…did I not call off this meeting?

ADAM
If you want any chance of winning you should have as many meetings with your lawyers as possible.

LORENZO
Yeah, I know, and that’s also my plan.

CHASE
Then why would you possibly want to call off this meeting?

REAGAN
Did you forget to tell us something, Lorenzo?

LORENZO
Maybe.

After a pause:

LORENZO
SugarCity reached out to me and offered to connect me with their best lawyers.

LINCOLN
YOU DITCHED US?!

LORENZO
Not quite. I said I’d get back to them.

MADISON
Why would they even want to do that?

LORENZO
They love me. The last thing they want to see is their unofficial spokesperson going to prison.

SAM
Yeah, that makes sense. What are you gonna do?

LORENZO
Get back to them.

CHASE
Lorenzo, you can’t ditch us. We have what’s best for you in mind. They only care about their company.

LORENZO
I never thought of it like that.

ADAM
How could you possibly not?

LORENZO
They said they have my best intentions in mind.

ADAM
Of course they said that, reality is they don’t want their profits to hurt.

LORENZO
So you’re saying I should stick with you guys?

SAM
Given how close we are to the court date, yeah I’d say so.

LORENZO
I don’t know, their lawyers are like good lawyers and everything.

CHASE
EXCUSE ME?!

LORENZO
Oops. I didn’t mean to imply you guys are bad lawyers! Just…new. These guys have tons of experience.

MADISON
They don’t care about you.

LORENZO
Maybe. I don’t know what I should do.

ADAM
You’re nervous you’re gonna lose with us, aren’t you?

LORENZO
Kinda, yeah.

ADAM
Well I can assure you, your fate would be no different in their hands.

LORENZO
I can’t go to jail, I’m innocent!

REAGAN
Then you have nothing to worry about.

MADISON
Are you innocent though, Lorenzo? Accidental guilt isn’t the same as innocence.

After a period of silence.

LORENZO
We can decide on a plea once and for all at our next meeting.

CHASE
WE KEPT OUR CLIENT!!!

CHASE, ADAM, SAM, LINCOLN, REAGAN, and MADISON excitedly leave LORENZO’s apartment. LORENZO sits down and wonders if he made the right choice.

CHASE, ADAM, SAM, LINCOLN, REAGAN, and MADISON return to LORENZO’s home for one final meeting before the trial.

REAGAN
This is it Lorenzo: we’re deciding once and for all on the plea.

LORENZO
Innocent.

REAGAN
That’s not a plea.

LORENZO
What are my choices?

ADAM
Well, you can plead innocent or you can plead guilty.

LORENZO
So I CAN plead innocent.

LINCOLN
Adam means guilty and not guilty.

LORENZO
So I can plead innocent or not guilty?

LINCOLN
We’re gonna be here all night aren’t we.

MADISON
Lorenzo, if you think you’re innocent you plead not guilty. If you think you’re guilty you plead guilty. If you plead guilty and they find you guilty, you might have a slightly less harsh sentence than if you plead not guilty and they find you guilty.

LORENZO
So I should plead guilty so I don’t go to jail, I understand.

MADISON
NO! You should only plead guilty if you did the crime and there’s like, no way to cover it up or something.

LORENZO
You guys are good lawyers, right?

CHASE
Yeah, sure.

LORENZO
Then I’ll plead not guilty.

LINCOLN
Just use your usual charm to try to win over the jury. Even if they think you technically committed campaign finance fraud…I mean, I think they can excuse that for someone like you, right?

SAM
I can’t believe I’m saying this Lorenzo, but the plan is for you to be yourself.

LORENZO
Be myself. Not guilty. Understood.

REAGAN
You know what? I think we might actually win this one after all! Get a good night’s sleep Lorenzo, and eat a nice cotton candy breakfast.

REAGAN, SAM, LINCOLN, CHASE, ADAM, and MADISON all leave. LORENZO turns on the television to find the state congressman who defeated him being interviewed on a cable news show.

INTERVIEWER
The trial involving your former political opponent Lorenzo is coming up. What are you hoping to see come out of that trial?

CONGRESSMAN
I hope Lorenzo is going to prison and I suspect Lorenzo is going to prison as well. What he did was try to steal an election from me. He was unsuccessful, but just barely. Lorenzo has had it easy his whole life and thinks he can get away with anything, well I’m here to tell you now that Lorenzo will not be a free man after his trial. As a lawyer myself, I see no way Lorenzo could win this case. I’ve heard he has an inexperienced team surrounding him as well. I fully condemn Lorenzo’s attempt to steal my victory from me and know our justice system will haunt him at his trial.

INTERVIEWER
Thank you Congressman for your time.

LORENZO shuts off the television, thinking about what the CONGRESSMAN said.
