Wednesday Ratings: Code Black Rises, Chicago PD Falls

The Ratings Junkie Thursday, January 21, 2016
ABC

The Middle: 1.8
The Goldbergs: 2.0
Modern Family (R): 1.6
Blackish: 1.7
American Crime: 1.0

With Modern Family as a rerun, Blackish fell a couple tenths as expected, but still strong enough to prove that it can pretty much hold its own. Following was American Crime, which still stays above fractional and is doing much better than I would have expected. Earlier in the night was a season low for The Middle and a typical 2.0 for The Goldbergs.

CBS

2 Broke Girls: 1.7
Mike & Molly: 1.6
Criminal Minds: 2.0
Code Black: 1.4

CBS's comedies, one of which has already been canceled and both of which are unscheduled past a few more weeks, continue to perform better than the vast majority of their shows. Criminal Minds is also seeing the benefit of no Empire, hitting another 2.0 and actually being steady year-to-year. Even Code Black rose this week, but being only co-owned and having a shorter season means it's probably still considered inferior to Madam Secretary, Elementary, etc.

FOX

American Idol: 2.4
Second Chance: 1.0

American Idol continues its final season as one of the top-rated shows on FOX, though being down 29% year-to-year isn't exactly something to brag about. Following it was Second Chance, which appears to be a very long shot at renewal.

NBC

The Mysteries of Laura: 1.2
Law & Order:SVU: 1.7
Chicago PD: 1.5

The Mysteries of Laura got its 1.2, which is actually somewhat of an overachievement this season considering it wasn't doing any better last season. Following Laura, were Law & Order: SVU and Chicago PD, neither of which could keep up last week's heat, but both of which still look relatively strong.

CW

Arrow: 1.1
Supernatural: 0.7

The CW's Wednesday dramas are back in original mode, with Arrow tying the midseason finale and last seasons's year-ago outing, while Supernatural also continues as one of The CW's strongest shows, despite being over a decade old.
