Does FOX Really Need Grandfathered?
So far this season, FOX has renewed 11 shows: comedies The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, Brooklyn 9-9, The Last Man On Earth, and New Girl; dramas Empire, Scream Queens, Gotham, Rosewood, Lucifer, and Bones. Additionally, a renewal for Family Guy is fully expected (may not even be announced) given the fact that they are already working on a new production cycle and have leftover episodes from this cycle.

If those are all the renewals FOX hands out, then they would have renewed their top 12 scripted shows in Live + Same Day ratings, while cancelling the 8 ones that were unlucky enough to fall that threshold. Last season, the 8 shows that fell below the Top 10 were canceled, while the rest were renewed. So even if they cancel the same number of shows this season as last season, they still end up renewing two more hours, essentially solving the problem of an Idol-less schedule.

This season, they lost American Idol, freeing up about two hours of time slots in the spring. However, it's worth noting that FOX renewed six drama hours instead of the usual four, and assuming Family Guy is renewed, they've renewed their typical three comedy hours. Do they really have room for Grandfathered?

It is widely known that the most money that a network or production company makes from a show is the distribution rights. FOX only holds half the ownership in Grandfathered, which the other half belonging to ABC Studios. The ratings are miserable, holding at around a 0.8 for its most recent airings despite having one of the best, if not the best, lead-ins FOX could have given it. In fact, it just recently went down to a 0.6 for its return. We can't say they didn't try with the time slot upgrade. Sure, the New Girl lead-in has made it more female-skewing, but it still loses a sizable portion of its lead-in's numbers. Given how far away this show is from a potential syndication deal of which FOX would only partially benefit, I see no reason to keep this one going. Unless, of course, there are numbers we are not seeing, such as C7 boosts or strong streaming numbers. I don't catch that vibe though. You can argue that half-owned Grandfathered can get renewed with ratings just below un-owned Brooklyn 9-9, but we must remember there that Brooklyn 9-9 is only one season away from a potential syndication deal, and given that it is supposedly a solid streaming player for Hulu, the more episodes the better.

If FOX wants to do more comedy business with ABC Studios, or if ABC Studios pressures them into having one of their comedies on the schedule next season, there is the Courtney Cox-led Charity Case, which on the description and the lead's name looks to be a better fit with New Girl than Grandfathered. I think that would be a solid option, and we must also remember that FOX has ordered comedy Son of Zorn to series. Renewing Grandfathered would just be putting another low-rated comedy on the schedule when the priority should be finding something that will last.

FOX picked up two new comedies for this season's fall schedule and a couple more for midseason, so I see no reason why they can't do that again.

FOX only has to schedule 12.5 hours of programming next season, and they've already renewed 8.5 hours. If you include Family Guy, MasterChef Junior, Son of Zorn, and Shots Fired, we are up to 11.5 hours of programming. That's only 1.5 hours left, and there may even be another hour of reality thrown on Fridays somewhere. Even if they save a couple veterans for midseason, I think a struggling FOX would like to premiere more than 1 new drama and 1 new comedy in order to find a new hit. They supposedly have strong pilots in dramas Pitch and Star, and comedies Making History and Charity Case. So could Grandfathered get saved? Yes. It wouldn't surprise me *that* much. But I think it should be in FOX's best interest to cancel the show and start fresh. Their schedule is getting full as it is.

Family Guy
I've done my research on Family Guy, and it appears that the team is already working on a new production cycle. While the one currently airing starts with "DAC", and there are still a few unscheduled episodes from the cycle, it is also to be noted that per Wikipedia listings there are a few "EAC" episodes already made, meaning that Family Guy has indeed gotten the go-ahead for another production cycle and has essentially been renewed. I'll keep it in the Certain to be Renewed column
for now in case FOX is planning on making an official announcement, but if they don't we are assuming it's renewed.

There have been rumors that they are planning to do a Family Guy movie, so now the question is if more episodes will be delayed while they work on a movie. Regardless, expect to see some Family Guy episodes at least on the schedule next season with a new production cycle.

Cooper Barrett's Guide to Surviving Life
If you haven't noticed in the chart above, I've moved Cooper Barrett to the Canceled column after it was recently pulled from the schedule. Bordertown and Second Chance might as well already be there, it's only a matter of time before FOX officially announces it.

The X-Files
It should be noted that there's a strong chance an official decision is not made on The X-Files by upfronts, as they would need to get the cast together again. FOX is said to be very interested in another season, but we don't know when that will be. I'll be keeping it in the table, but it may have to be thrown out of the predictions game if they don't say anything between now and the upfronts in about a month.

Grandfathered
Now here is the tricky one. If you saw a certain earlier post, you would know about how FOX hasn't renewed more than six comedies in a season. With five already officially renewed + Family Guy essentially coming back as well, renewing Grandfathered would mean renewing one more comedy than normal. However, if they don't renew Grandfathered then no freshmen comedy will be returning, unless they count Scream Queens (which is more of a thriller dramedy from what I hear). Will they feel the need to keep a freshmen comedy, or will they point to the low ratings and cancel it? After all, they already treated it well by giving it a time slot upgrade midseason and it didn't capitalize on it.

What's Up with the Family Guy Scare?
It was a little strange to see that FOX is going to premiere a new comedy where Family Guy generally airs. Yet, it hasn't been confirmed that that will be the show's final time slot. Plus, Family Guy does have leftover episodes after its season finale (it only has 20 episodes this season). The show is guaranteed to come back next year, it's just not gaurenteed that it's getting renewed for another cycle. Does Seth MacFarlane want to move on? Time will tell. I'm sure FOX has a plan, they just haven't really told us what that is yet.

Drama Update
With the renewals of Lucifer and Rosewood, FOX has very few decisions left to be announced between now and upfronts. Second Chance is pretty much a gaurenteed cancellation, as is Sleepy Hollow if it stays at these low (even for Friday) levels. FOX has already renewed two dramas more than usual (though Scream Queens and Bones are both 1/2 seasons), so the only one I see with a plausible chance of returning is The X Files. It's been reported that FOX wants more episodes, but we may not even hear any news about the show even at upfronts. It all depends on getting the cast back together yet again.

Comedy Update
Honestly not sure what's taking so long with a New Girl renewal, but I suspect it will come sooner rather than later. Ratings are still relatively good, especially in the W18-34 demo, and is FOX's #1 live-action comedy. Which leaves us with one show: Grandfathered. Ratings simply don't warrant a renewal, so the only thing keeping this one in the "Watching" column is the fact that otherwise they won't be renewing any freshmen comedies. Then again, they could pass off Scream Queens as their freshmen comedy renewal since they've already called it "the #2 comedy on cable" (as I think I mentioned before).

Why Is Bordertown "Certain to be Canceled"?
LA Times
After miserably low ratings in the post-Family Guy time slot and being shoved to 7pm without a renewal announced, I had Bordertown as a certain cancelation. It showed promise rising from week 1
to week 2 despite the football boost more or less being over by the time it aired, and for holding surprisingly well at its move to 7pm--even at just a 0.8. I have heard people say that NASCAR could have been boosting it, though I can't find any NASCAR ratings so I'm not sure if it's true.

Anyways, NASCAR or not, it slipped all the way down to a 0.4 A18-49 rating (M18-34 will probably be no higher than a 0.5). Here's a little song that might describe FOX's freshmen comedies of the season:

Why Is Grandfathered Still in the "Watching" Column?
This is great news for Grandfathered if they intend on renewing a freshmen comedy. Though, they could easily cancel it and PR Scream Queens as their comedy renewal (after all, it would be the #2 comedy on cable everyone (!!!)). Grandfathered would be an easy cancellation call if it wasn't for the three even bigger flops they premiered this season. That's the sole reason why it's still in the "Watching" column.
