TV Ratings 5/17/17: Downward Dog Has 'Ruff' Start, Beyond Borders Finale Down (UPDATED)

Wednesday night was finale night for many shows, as well as a premiere night for one. As for that premiere of Downward Dog, if you were hoping for solid ratings, you were barking up the wrong tree. The new series premiered to a 1.1, below every Blackish performance this year. But ABC's news was mostly good, as every show ending for the season was up a tenth week-to-week. On CBS, Survivor was steady, as per usual. Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders double pumped for its finale two episodes ever. It did not go so well. Both episodes delivered a low 0.7 in the demo. On NBC, SVU was up a tenth, while the finales of both Blindspot and Chicago PD were steady. Arrow on the CW came back down, but The 100 stayed at a 0.3. Empire on Fox was also down, though the recently-cancelled Shots Fired was steady.

Finals Update: Empire (+0.1) and Blindspot (+0.1) adjusted up.

Beyond Borders' Ratings Declared Criminal by CBS, Canceled After 2 Seasons

CBS has decided to send Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders into retirement. After two seasons, the series will end its run after an underwhelming season ratings-wise. While the first season had decent ratings that warranted a renewal, the second season began at a series low and just got lower, ending with a 0.8 average that was weaker than fall/winter occupant Code Black but an improvement on the brief slot occupant Doubt. The Gary Sinise series eventually dipped as low as 0.7, far below last season's low point and about half of the mothership's average. This was a correct prediction for the TV Ratings Guide.

TV Ratings Wednesday, May 3: Modern Family Falls, Black-ish Down for Backdoor Pilot (UPDATED)
Finals update: It seems that 9:00 shows were the most prone to adjustments this week, with 3 going up and 1 going down, and only 1 adjustment fro a show at a different hour. Modern Family adjusted up a tenth to 1.7. It is still down two tenths from its last episode, and at a new low, but now it isn't as drastic. Criminal Minds also adjusted up a tenth, it to a 1.5, making its week-to-week improvement even stronger. Empire joined the upward adjustment train as well, going up a tenth to 1.9. It's still a low, but only a two-tenth drop week-to-week now. Chicago PD was the one non-9:00 show to adjust, going up a tenth to 1.2, which makes it even with last week's rating. The one piece of bad news in these adjustments was for The 100, which adjusted down a tenth to 0.3, making it even with last week.

The table reflects the changes, while the analysis below remains unchanged.

On ABC, Modern Family returned to a 1.6, down from the 1.9 it rated when it last aired four weeks ago, and a new low. Black-ish aired the backdoor pilot for its potential spin-off Liberal Arts last night. It was down from the 1.3 it got in the 9:30 episode last week, with a 1.2. Earlier in the night, The Goldbergs was even with a 1.4, and Speechless earned a 1.2, also even with last week. And at 10:00, Designated Survivor was down from last week's 1.1 with a 0.9.

On FOX, Shots Fired was even compared to the 0.8s it has received for the past two weeks. It was followed by Empire, which was down from last week's 2.1 with a 1.8, falling beneath 2.0 for the first time.

CBS and NBC had their typical procedural-focused Wednesday line-ups. CBS's Criminal Minds franchise took up two-thirds of their night, with Criminal Minds earning a 1.4, up from last week's 1.3, and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders scoring a 0.9, up from last week's 0.8. They were preceded by Survivor, which was at a 1.8 this week, even with last week. NBC started the night off with bubble drama Blindspot, even this week at a 0.9. This was followed by two Dick Wolf dramas, first Law & Order: SVU, down from last week's 1.1 with a 1.0, and then Chicago PD, down from last week's 1.2 with a 1.1.

On the CW, Arrow was even and The 100 was up this week. Arrow scored a 0.5, while The 100 scored a 0.4. They were at 0.5 and 0.3 last week, respectively.

TV Ratings 4/19/17: Shots Fired Dips Without Empire, 2 Hour Survivor Steady (UPDATED)

Wednesday night had very little original programing, with all of NBC and The CW and some of Fox and ABC off for the night. ABC has strong repeats and averaged a 0.9 for the 8 and 9 hours (The Goldbergs was a tad above than and Blackish a bit below), and Designated Survivor rebounded a bit, up a little from last week's series low. CBS had a much stronger night than last Wednesday, with Survivor doing double duty instead of Beyond Borders. The two hour Survivor was steady with last week's one hour, while Beyond Borders was steady with the latest 10 PM episode. Shots Fired on Fox aired without Empire for the first time, and it was down a tenth. NBC was in repeats and did pretty well, up a bit from last week's repeats.
Finals Update: Repeats of Arrow (-0.2), Whose Line? (-0.2 & -0.1), and SVU (-0.1) adjusted down. A Modern Family repeat (+0.1) adjusted up.

TV Ratings 4/12/17: Designated Survivor Fractional, Beyond Borders Rises at 9 PM (UPDATED)

With most shows in repeats, Wednesday was a mild night for TV ratings. Most shows airing were steady or up, so the night wasn't as ugly as last week. ABC's only original program was Designated Survivor, which was steady despite a repeat lead-in. Shots Fired on Fox was down and was fractional for the first time (the series was fractional in the prelims before adjusting up last week), while Empire was able to tick up after two weeks of ugly drops. The recently renewed Criminal Minds took the night off, so spin-off Beyond Borders did double duty. The show was up two tenths in its special timeslot, and was up one tenth at 10. Survivor was again steady. NBC was in repeats and was stuck at 0.8 all night, while The CW stayed at 0.2 with their repeats, and ABC was at 0.9 in their first hour and 1.0 in their second.

Finals Update: Designated Survivor (-0.2) and repeats of the Goldbergs (-0.1), Speechless (-0.1), Modern Family (-0.1), and Blackish (-0.2) adjusted down.
