First Week Peak: Predictions for Sweet Magnolias, Alice and Steve, and Every Year After

Welcome to First Week Peak, a column which discusses shows that are about to premiere on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Paramount+, HBO Max, Peacock, Hulu, and/or Apple TV. Each discussion concludes with a prediction for the show's weekly peak performance on their respective streaming service's U.S. trending chart, including a reader poll. Final results can be found in our weekly What's Trending On Streaming column. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Sweet Magnolias (Season 5)
Premieres: June 11
Genre: Romantic drama
Synopsis: Lifelong friends Maddie, Helen and Dana Sue lift each other up as they juggle relationships, family and careers in the small, Southern town of Serenity.

Going For It
Sweet Magnolias is Netflix's only new scripted launch of the week, so it won't have competition from other new scripted shows. It's also had four seasons to grow an audience, and has reached the top of Netflix's weekly chart before.

Going Against It
Despite entering its fifth season, Sweet Magnolias only has a 1.4 Buzz Score on Television Stats as of Saturday, June 6. That's the 94th-highest on Netflix. It also declined in relative popularity in its fourth season from its third.

The Precedent
The fourth season of Sweet Magnolias spent three weeks in Netflix’s Top 10 in February 2025. It debuted at #6 before rising to #4 in its second week, then declining to #10 in its third and final week on the chart. It spent four weeks on the chart in its third season in summer 2023, peaking at #1. Keep in mind, its daily peak predicted below likely will wind up higher than the weekly peak.

First Week Peak Prediction: #8 on Netflix

Alice and Steve (Season 1)
Premieres: June 8
Genre: British comedy
Synopsis: Alice is devastated when her best friend Steve starts dating her 26-year-old daughter Izzy. She's going to lose her best friend and her daughter in one fell swoop. Alice tries everything she can to end the relationship. Unfortunately for her, Steve's more than ready for the attack, and what begins as a perfect friendship, devolves into an all-out feud.

Going For It
Alice and Steve has a fairly robust 2.5 Buzz Score as of June 6. That's the 7th-highest for a Disney+ show, where it will premiere internationally. There also isn't a clear-cut leader on Hulu's chart, with four different shows topping the chart last week

Going Against It
As a British comedy, Alice and Steve is likely to do better on Disney+ in the UK than it is on Hulu in the US.

The Precedent
British comedy-drama Rivals just wrapped its second season under the same format, airing on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ everywhere else. The season finale reached #7 on Hulu's chart the day after it was released. It spent two other days on the chart, one at #7 and one at #8. Its second season premiered at #6 in May.

First Week Peak Prediction: #4 on Hulu

Every Year After (Season 1)
Premieres: June 10
Genre: Romantic drama
Synopsis: Today, Prime Video gave fans their first glimpse of the beloved Barry's Bay romance by revealing the first look images for Every Year After, the series based on Carley Fortune's bestselling novel Every Summer After. The Amazon Original series will debut all episodes on June 10 with an eight-episode season and will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories around the world. Told over the course of six years and one week in Barry's Bay - the quintessential lake town - Every Year After is a romantic, nostalgic story of first loves and the people and choices that mark us forever.

Going For It
As mentioned in the synopsis, Every Year After is based on a popular book. Amazon is also apparently excited about the series, as is the media. Entertainment Weekly has teased the creator's five-season plan for the series.

Going Against It
It's harder to gauge how much actual potential viewers are anticipating Every Year After, as the series does not yet have its own dedicated Buzz Score on Television Stats. It does have two subreddits, but those have only brought in less than 250 visitors combined over the past week. It will also have intense competition from other recently-released Prime Video series, discussed below.

The Precedent
The most recent Prime Video series based on a book was Off Campus, which did huge numbers for the streaming service upon its premiere in May and remains hovering around #1 and #2 in the past week. Of course, that will also make it tougher for Every Year After to top Prime Video's chart, though Spider-Noir was able to dethrone it for a bit.

First Week Peak Prediction: #3 on Prime Video
