Welcome to the first post of 2020! Here's where things stand one week into the new decade.
It is a good time to be Bob <3's Abishola. After some rather 'meh' performances for most of the fall, Bobishola now looks like the strongest freshman comedy for CBS. While Carol's Second Act and The Unicorn have trended downward over the last few episodes, Bobishola remains stable, or even up in some episodes. It seems unlikely CBS is going to cancel every freshman comedy, and Bobishola is holding the fort down quite nicely on Mondays at 830. CBS probably wants some stronger results, but nothing here makes me think Bobishola is cancelled. For the first time this season, it finds itself as Certain to be Renewed.
Even with The Unicorn trending downward, it actually moves into more positive territory in this weeks update, jumping from Likely to be Cancelled to Toss-Up. The first performance in 2020 featured a series low (tying in the demo, and new low in total viewers), which has some leniency after having to face Jeopardy. I still do not think it will be renewed in the end, but I need more numbers one way or another before making a final determination. At this point, it is about 55% cancellation, 45% renewal; although still too tough to call.
There have not been many positive stories this year, but Magnum P.I. is starting to look significantly stronger as the season progresses. A toss-up for most of season one, Magnum P.I. has really sparked in recent weeks, and jumped to a 0.8 for its crossover with Hawaii Five-0. It is a bummer the show is going off the air for an undetermined amount of time (for MacGyver), especially when it is finally hitting its stride. Hopefully it finds its way back onto the schedule quite soon. Even with that hiatus schedule, things are looking great for the sophomore drama, with it moving up to Likely to be Renewed for the first time this season.
CBS had a solid premiere with spinoff FBI: Most Wanted debuting this week to a 0.8 (0.76 in unrounded) in L+SD. When L+3 were released, FBI: Most Wanted spiked to 1.15, a pretty good 50% rise from L+SD. Retention from the mothership series was 86% in L+SD, and 90% in L+3. That is about as good as it can get for a spinoff, especially debuting in the 10 o'clock hour. With a crossover scheduled for spring, I think FBI: Most Wanted has to drop significantly for CBS to even consider dumping the series. (Update: Week 2 held at 0.8). It starts the new decade as Likely to be Renewed.
