2020-21 Season to Date (9/21-3/10): FOX Reclaims Marginal Ground in 2nd Place Thanks to Fading Masked Singer

FOX has clever strategies in how they have run their network since American Idol.  The action always heated up after the new year, and they had NFL to boost the ratings earlier.  So they had NFL boosting weaker shows in the fall, followed by unveiling their big ticket items in January and February.  Most hits on the schedule debuted in the winter, including The Masked Singer.  Red-hot in 2019 with ratings broaching the 3.0 threshold.  It is a little saddening to see The Masked singer only two years later returning in the spring with a 1.31 rating.  Indeed a winner, it is no longer in the ultra-hit category, but above average.  But it is no longer untouchable and fading a bit.

The inflations from the Sunday animation block have series melting to lower ranks, but the other shows have exhibited surprising strength.  9-1-1 remains a solid player still above the 1.0 mark, and 9-1-1: Lonestar also holds up its end of the bargain retaining more than 80% of its lead-in.  The Resident has exhibited sturdiness this turbulent season, holding close to its seasonal debut and helping FOX colonized an evening FOX struggled with in recent years.  Formerly an evening with struggling comedies and drama series slated for disposal, The Resident broke this pattern and now is an asset the network relies on to keep open.

FOX has problem areas they need to address, namely their aging and weak comedy department.  Bob's Burgers has flipped their fortunes and remained fresh, but The Simpsons and Family Guy have long since overstayed their welcome.  And will FOX continue live-action comedies on Thursdays?  With Last Man Standing going out with a whimper, Call Me Kat hardly seems strong enough to keep a block anchored.  FOX will likely finish the season in 2nd place.  It won't fall far enough to sink to CBS' level (they held the Superbowl to boost their sagging ratings), but don't have enough strength to topple NBC out of 1st place.

How to Summarize the 5 Networks for the 2020-21 Season

Most Improved Network: ABC

Crippled with a lack of NFL, the alphabet network has stiff competition and for the last 11 years knows it will likely be resigned to 4th place.  However, they made up for their losses with impressive reality TV shows and gameshows to hold their schedule strong and give 3rd place CBS a run for their money.  Dramas struggled for years outside of Thursday evening, and now several strong entries glue many parts of the schedule.  Their comedies need an overhaul, but everything else shines and is updated on the network, a major improvement over recent seasons.

Most Updated Network: CW

Look at the chart and notice the majority of the lower end belongs to CW.  However, almost all shows have a bold green Renewed label next to them.  CW saw the writing on the wall they would never be able to keep up with the other networks and redirected their strategy to streaming online.  They also successfully showcase year-round programming and decided to commit to shows people couldn't wait for vs trying to amaze and shock everyone.  The television channel is only one portion of reaching viewers as their target audience streams anyways.  CW updated the overplayed scheduling game their competition has yet to retire.

Most Entertaining Network: FOX

A boring show on FOX?  The only boredom perhaps rests on the Sunday animated sitcoms.  Beyond that, FOX has it all.  Sports, Reality TV, Gameshows, Dramas and Sitcoms.  The Disney/FOX merger forced the network into a controversial update in 2018, changing the tempo and paring down several shows with cult followings.  Unlike some networks that let shows and concepts overstay their welcome, FOX recognized they had to downsize before growing strong.  This keeps the entries updated, fresh and entertaining.

Most Disappoint Network: CBS

America's oldest network seems to have the oldest strategies.  And that isn't a compliment.  To be disappointing, one must be capable of doing better, and CBS is in this category.  They managed to locate winning sitcoms, but the majority of their lineup consists of aged procedurals and their formulated spinoffs.  Reality TV has cooled down, and the NFL coverage is lighter than NBC and FOX.  Had CBS lacked the Superbowl this season, they likely would have tumbled to 4th Place.  CBS needs fresh blood in their schedule to attract younger viewers and needs to rethink rebooting shows and needless spinoffs.

Best Network: NBC

Tried and true, NBC is back in 1st place.  They had that trophy stolen by FOX last year (after an impressive/consecutive 8-year run) due to The Masked Singer remaining red-hot.  The tables leveled this year and NBC has returned to prominence due to their loaded deck of dramas.  NBC appears to be following the trend of CW and committed to earlier renewals, giving good faith to viewers cannot wait to return vs. "will the show be renewed or end this year?"  Yes, New Amsterdam is middling at best, but it not only serves a vital function on the schedule but has a loyal fanbase clamoring for its return.  Same for SVU, which has experienced a mild bounceback.  The pandemic left floods of timeslots vacant this season, and NBC opted to license existing shows to fill space and spice up variety (and perhaps corner new tastes for the upcoming pilot season.  Well done NBC as you knocked it out of the park under dire circumstances.

Drama Scorecard: November 29-December 4, 2020

The fall entries have started to hibernate till 2021, and the last of the returning shows arrived with CBS unveiling 4 more entries.  They took the night off on Sunday, November 29, leaving only Pandora (0.1) and The Outpost (0.0) to match their prior outing.  Monday, November 30 featured scattered helpings of steadiness with ABC's The Good Doctor (0.6), CBS' All Rise (0.5) and Bull (0.5), as well as FOX' Filthy Rich (0.3).  Tuesday, December 1 had NBC and CBS taking the night off from original scripted programming, leaving steady entries from ABC's surprise hit Big Sky (0.7), and disappointment with FOX' Next (0.2).

Wednesday, December 2 entered another drama into the arena as CBS welcomed back SEAL Team (0.5, 0.5) with a double helping that bested the same serving they gave SWAT by a tenth.  Alarmingly, ABC's For Life (0.3) unexpectedly hit the skids and lost two tenths.  Thursday, December 3 saw some slight drops as Station 19 (0.8) lost two tenths and Grey's Anatomy (1.2) and A Million Little Things (0.7) shed a tenth.  And Law and Order: SVU (0.5) stayed steady as well.  Friday, December 4 featured CBS unveiling three veteran dramas with MacGyver (0.5), Magnum PI (0.5) and Blue Bloods (0.5) all returning down but solid.

29 original dramas have emerged from the COVID-19 wreckage, and 16 more are expected to come back full swing, 11 of which are coming from CW.  FOX is expected to make a slight rebound with their 9-1-1 franchise after their embarrassing burnoffs leave them appearing to have the weakest entries among the big four.  What readers need to realize is this is FOX' pattern since American Idol soared strong.  They deal out mediocre at best in the fall, then unveil the big ticket items in January.  Almost all hit shows debut in January with recent winners such as 9-1-1, Empire and the early entries of The Resident.

Elsewhere, NBC appears again to hold the strongest dramas on pallet and will likely claim the crown this year.  ABC has slightly improved with Thursdays in solid shape as well as the surprise success of Big Sky.  Other dramas are middling but keeping ABC in strong shape.  CBS has disappointed with not a single drama busting through the 1.0 stratosphere and few hits anticipated.  However, majority of their players have delivered at 0.5 or higher, demonstrating they have much value on the schedule.  As for CW, do they even regard ratings?  If they did, executives would be expecting strokes and heart attacks with the abysmal deliveries.  However, CW has moved past the outdated broadcast network format and seeking lucrative means from streaming to gain exposure.

Expect the upcoming weeks to be lean and light with original entries as the holidays are in full swing.

Drama Scorecard: November 15-20, 2020

ABC and CBS loaded 8 more dramas into the lineup this week, leaving ABC deflating to below NBC in overall drama ratings as expected but stronger nonetheless.  Sunday, November 15 showed the true CBS weight as NCIS: LA (0.6) and NCIS: NO (0.4) deflated two tenths, while CW's Pandora (0.0) played invisible in the ratings yet again.  The network also unveiled its lineuo on Monday, November 16 with All Rise (0.5) and Bull (0.4) delivering lower than last season, while ABC's The Good Doctor (0.6) and FOX's outgoing Filthy Rich (0.3) holding steady.  Tuesday, November 17 saw more action as ABC premiered its freshman drama Big Sky (0.7) to modest results, NBC's This Is Us (1.2) shed a tenth, and FOX's nearly canceled neXt (0.3) held steady.  CBS unveiled its procedural lineup to softer results as NCIS (0.9) and FBI (0.9) could not break the 1.0 barrier, and FBI: Most Wanted (0.6) premiered noticeably weaker.

Wednesday, November 18 featured ABC's sophomore season premiere of For Life (0.4) low but matching its lead-in while CBS' SWAT (0.3) shed yet another tenth.  NBC's Chicago-verse lost a little ground with Chicago Med (1.0) and Chicago Fire (1.0) barely staying above the solid line, and Chicago PD (0.8) dropping two tenths.  Thursday, November 19 featured some downticks across the board as NBC's Law and Order: SVU (0.5) lost a tenth, ABC's Station 19 (1.0) also lost two tenths, and A Million Little Things (0.7) debuted slightly down.  However, Grey's Anatomy (1.3) gained a tenth and for the first time in a while outrated NBC's former heavyweight This Is Us.  Over at CW, a two hour series finale sent out it's oldest player Supernatural (0.3, 0.3) solid and steady.  Friday, November 20 only featured The Blacklist (0.4) delivering low but steady.

A few more status predictions unveiled as 2+ episodes aired for the drama slate.  Station 19 is a Certain Renewal as it is pummeling its competition outside of Football and one of ABC's strongest players in its deck.  The Blacklist is a likely renewal given it has delivered slow but steady on Friday nights.  And SWAT downgraded to Leans Cancellation due to an embarrassing slide to a 0.3.  CBS seems to be committed to procedurals with "a name" like David Boreanaz, Shemar Moore and Michael Weatherly.  But how long can these dramas stay afloat before CBS decides it is time for a shakeup?

The dramas displayed show ABC and NBC are the strongest players as they bundle their hits in select evenings.  Odd players like The Good Doctor and Law and Order: SVU struggle, but are valued and marketable.  They may be subject to timeslot changes as needed but show strong commitments from their network.  And mass renewals from NBC show the network has good faith in its Dick Wolf franchises, along with odd players like This is Us and New Amsterdam.  CBS on the other hand is showing a lineup stacked with aged players.  Not a single show outside of reality TV and sports has cracked a 1.0, and the network has yet to show signs of reinventing or updating itself.
