Delta Season 1, Episode 2 - Cat Scratch Fever

DELTA! is one of The TV Ratings Guide's first ORIGINAL SERIES, an original feature ONLY on The TV Ratings Guide.

DELTA! S01E02, CAT SCRATCH FEVER:

Delta is at the animal shelter, looking for a pet.
Delta: Hey, uh, Jean.
Jean, the receptionist, jumps up in her seat.
Jean: Hello and welcome to the Eastern DuPage County Animal Shelter. I’m Jean.
Delta: I know.
Jean: How’d you know?
Delta: Your nameplate. It says Jean.
Jean: Oh. How can I be of assistance to you this evening?
Delta: I want a cat. I’m in desperate need of a friend.
Jean: Well that’s sweet. Let me take you to our cat room. We only have ten right now, some lady came in and adopted five of them just about an hour ago.
Delta: Five? That’s insane!
Jean: I know, but at least she seemed nice. Her friend said she just lost her husband so I guess she needed company.
Delta: I guess that does make it better. I just want a cat because I’m what I like to call “eternally single.”
Jean: Here we are, dear. Go ahead in and see what you like. I’ll be right here.
Delta: Sounds good!
Delta heads into the cat room.
Delta: Oh my! Look at you. You’re all just so cute.
60 minutes later…
Delta: Jean, I think I’m ready.
Jean: So who do you want?
Delta: All of them.
Jean: Wow. That’s an interesting selection. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone adopt ten cats before!
Delta: Well, you’ve never met me before!
Jean: Are you sure you want them all?
Delta: Yes. I couldn’t ever pick between them.
Jean: Alright, I’ll need a friend to call for the recommendation. It’s a formality here if adopt any animal.
Delta: A friend? You can call my friend Ariana. She should be home by now.
Jean calls Ariana, who answers.
Jean: Hello Ms. Donnelson. This is Jean from the Eastern DuPage County Animal Shelter. I’m calling about your friend, Delta Fleming.
Ariana: What about her?
Jean: She’s submitted a form of adoption for some of our cats, and I just wanted to make sure you’d recommend her as a pet owner.
Ariana: Oh, absolutely. She’s very responsible.
Jean: Responsible enough for ten cats?
Ariana: I guess. Now, I gotta go John. I have some drinking, I mean cleaning, to do.
Jean: Okay -
Ariana hangs up.
Jean: Your friend seems lovely.
Delta: She’s not.
Jean: Oh, I know. All I need is your signature here and the payment.
Delta: How much?
Jean: Well, it would usually be $600 for all those cats, but we can knock $100 off because you did buy ten at once.
Delta: Sounds good. I just need to get my cat carriers out of the car. I only have two since that’s all I thought I’d get. Could I make a few trips?
Jean: Whatever you need to do.
The next day, at Delta’s
Delta: Guys!!! I can’t wait to show you my cats! I just got them all yesterday and you’re gonna love them!
Charlie: I’m allergic. Can I still go down?
Delta: Sure. I won’t bring them to you, they’re locked out of the living room anyway.
Charlie: Okay. I guess that’ll work.
Delta: The rest of you, come here.
Delta takes them into her dining room, where all of her cats are being kept.
Damien: My god.
Delta: That’s Katarina, and she’s beautiful. That’s Nancy. She’s sweet but she also has a sassy side. There’s Kathy, she’s a b*tch and all of the other cats hate her. There’s Scott, he’s the only male one that they had at the shelter. And that’s Oliva. She’s an orphan.
Jamie: Aren’t they all?
Delta: Maybe. But don’t cut me off! You haven’t met the other five yet!
Ariana: Five???
Delta: Yeah, I thought Jean told you I was getting ten.
Ariana: I thought it was just a really strange question.
Delta: Well it wasn’t. There are ten of them. But here’s Dorothy!!! Everyone wants to copy her haircut.
Ariana: She’s a cat!
Delta: I know, but her fur is just so beautiful.
Damien: Yeah, I’m done.
Jamie: I am too. I have… a thing.
Ariana: So do I.
Charlie: I can’t breathe!
Delta: Oh no, Oliva! How’d you get out of the room?
Charlie: You left the door open!
Delta: Oh.
Jamie, Ariana, and Damien take this opportunity to start running out.
Delta: You can’t leave!!! You haven’t met Tina yet! She’s the baby of the group!!!
Jamie: We don’t care!
Delta: How dare you? At least I love you, Tina!
Tina: *Meow*
Charlie: I gotta go.
Charlie heads up the stairs.
Charlie: Marilyn, it is a mess down their.
Marilyn: Why?
Charlie: Our girl adopted ten cats.
Marilyn: Aren’t you allergic?
Charlie: I thought so too, but I guess my mom was lying to me and I just never was around cats enough to realize it. But I felt nothing around those cats.
Marilyn: Why’d you run out screaming?
Charlie: It was horrible. She was introducing us to all of them and nobody was enjoying it.
Marilyn: How bad could it be?
Charlie: They’re all named after figure skaters or women my mom has book club with.
Marilyn: Well that’s not good.
Downstairs, Delta is trying to take care of her cats.
Delta: Alright guys, dinner time.
Delta goes to pick up her cat Kathy, but she scratches her arm and runs away.
Delta: Oh my god, it’s bleeding! And it’s so deep!!!!
Delta runs to the bathroom to treat her wound.
Delta: Why won’t it stop bleeding? Someone help me!!!
Delta’s mother Marilyn rushes down the stairs.
Marilyn: What’s all the yelling about?
Delta: My arm! The cat scratched it and it’s gushing blood everywhere!
Marilyn: Which one did it?
Delta: Kathy.
Marilyn: You’re gonna have to be a bit more specific than that.
Delta: The tan one!
Marilyn: That clears it up.
Delta: Well can’t you just help me?
Marilyn: Just put a band-aid on it and it’ll be fine.
Delta: That’s not helpful!
Marilyn: Just trust me!
Delta takes her mother’s advice and puts bandages on her arm.
The next day…
Delta: Oh my god my arm is killing me! I think it’s infected.
Marilyn comes running down.
Marilyn: What’s going on?
Delta: My arm is infected! Your advice was garbage!
Marilyn: I’m sorry. I thought it would be enough.
Delta: Well now I’m going to the doctor.
Delta calls the doctor and makes an appointment for later that day.
At the doctor…
Dr. Corzine: So what’s going on today Delta?
Delta: I think I have an infection. My cat scratched me and I didn’t treat the wound right.
Dr. Corzine: This seems pretty. Simple, I’ll check it out and- WOW. That is ugly.
Delta: I know.
Dr. Corzine: This is definitely infected. Take this medicated cream and head home. Make sure to rest and try not to use the arm too much.
Delta: Thanks Dr. Corzine. I’ll try to take your advice from now on and not my mother’s.
Delta goes out to her car and remembers something important.
Delta: Oh my god I have to get to work! Nah. I’ll just call out.

DELTA! S01E01, PILOT:

Delta Fleming, a thirty-something Chicagoan currently working as a lounge singer at the creatively named Chicago lounge owned by her ex-fiancé, The Lounge, is just finishing up her set for the night.

Delta: That’s all I got for you tonight, as always, thanks for coming out!

Lounge Patron: Will you be back tomorrow?

Delta: You know it, Louis!

Louis (slurring his words): See you then.

Delta: Sounds good.

Delta rushes off to a table near the back of the Lounge and sits down.

Delta: Wow guys, tonight was a rough day. There were three people here at any given time! That’s it!

Her stepfather, Charlie, tries to give her some advice.

Charlie: Well Delta, you can’t win ‘em all.

Delta: Actually, this was the biggest crowd of the day. I don’t know why I stay here.

Charlie: Because loyalty means so much to you! You don’t need to stay but you do.

Delta: It’s nice that you think that’s why I stay.

Charlie: It’s not the truth?

Delta: Ha! No. Rick broke my heart and I hope he falls into a ditch.

Charlie: Delta!

Delta: It’s true! He needs to pay!

Charlie: I’m sure you’re just hurt. The wound is very fresh.

Ariana, Delta’s best friend, interjects.

Ariana: Mr. Marquette-

Charlie: You can call me Charlie. You’ve known me since you were 11.

Ariana: Sorry. Force of habit. I mean, you were my 7th grade English teacher.

Charlie: Twenty years ago!

Ariana: Still fresh in my brain! Anyways, back to the real discussion here. That “man” ruined our girl’s life. She needs revenge. I say dropping dead in a ditch isn’t enough!

Delta: I didn’t say I wanted him to die in the ditch!

Ariana: Well maybe I do!

Charlie: Maybe you guys shouldn’t be saying this at his restaurant. You know, the one that employs *points to Delta* you even though nobody else wanted to.

Delta: Well that’s just mean!

Charlie: Well sorry! I just don’t want you to lose your job because you’re saying you want your ex-fiancé to fall into a ditch!
Just then, Rick walks by.

Rick: What was that about a ditch?

Charlie: I was telling them about an episode of Dateline. It really upset me. Me and good ‘ole Marilyn watched last night and I can’t stop thinking about it!

Rick: Okay… I gotta go now.

Delta: Bye!

Jamie, Delta’s friend and former neighbor, speaks up for the first time.

Jamie: Get outta here, you jerk!

Charlie: Jamie!

Jamie: Well it’s true.

Rick walks away after an increasingly strange conversation.

Jamie: Well that went well.

Delta: No it didn’t.

Charlie: I think maybe we should all just cool it. We should talk about happier things.

Delta’s brother Damien, the only other person at the table, finally looks up from his phone and says something.

Damien: Like what Charlie?

Charlie: I don’t know, we’re all alive and well.

Ariana: Are we?

Jamie: I don’t really think so. I mean, Delta works at her ex’s lounge and we’re all sitting at said lounge, talking over a plate of really gross and mushy potato skins. Our lives aren’t great.

Charlie: It could be worse.

Delta: Can we just leave. We can just go back to my place.

Charlie: Don’t you mean my place?

Delta: I pay rent! It’s my basement!

Charlie: Fair enough. Let’s go.

Ariana: Hey, Charlie?

Charlie: What is it?

Ariana: Can you give me a ride? I took the bus here from work and it smelled like a goat on there and a lady was scratching her legs for the entire half-hour ride. Those legs were red. They looked like rhubarb!

Charlie: Sure Ariana, just hold on and let me go to the bathroom.

Ariana: I still see those rhubarb legs why I close my eyes!

Charlie: Are you even listening?

Delta: Of course not. ARIANA YOU CAN GO WITH HIM!!!

Ariana: Oh, sorry. I’m still traumatized. Thank you Charlie.

Delta: He’s not even here right now.

Ariana: Oh, he already went out?

Delta: I’m honestly scared for you.

Jamie: He went to the bathroom, dear. Delta likes to go for the dramatics, but I like to be nice.

Ariana: Thank you.

Damien: Well I’m gonna go. I don’t have any of your strange problems.

Delta: Strange? You mean like waiting for your other friends?

Damien: Yeah, that. Really bizarre. Anyway, see you in about a half hour.

Damien rushes out to his car and soon gets a phone call.

Damien: Hey Bill. What’s going on?

His boss, Bill, is on the other line.

Bill: Damien, I know you’ve been waiting awhile for this call. I won’t drag this out. I just really want you to know that I did my best advocating for you, but-

Damien: Bill, what are you saying?

Bill: I couldn’t save your job. I’m so sorry, but we have to let you go. You’ve done great but our branch is closing and the company didn’t select you as one of the five they’re relocating.

Damien:  Bill. Please.

Bill: Damien, it’s over. Come get your things tomorrow.

Damien: I loved this job. And it was the only thing keeping me from losing my apartment! I just… I can’t imagine what this is gonna do to my life.

Bill: You can get another job.
Damien: Can I? I don’t think it’s so easy and I need money now. I have nothing.

Bill: Bye Damien. I truly am sorry.

Bill hangs up.

Damien starts sobbing in his car.

Damien: I can never tell my family. They’ll just pity me.

Back in The Lounge, Charlie finally gets out of the bathroom.

Charlie: Sorry ladies, I met a nice guy in there and we had a conversation about politics. He’s running
for state rep!

Delta: So, you had a political conversation in a bathroom and that’s why you left us waiting for 15 minutes.

Charlie: Yep! He was very intriguing.

Delta: Yeah, and you also met him in a bathroom.

Charlie: He may not have been the most sane, but he really was very nice. I think I’ll vote for him.

Delta: This is a great decision. Always vote for a random guy you meet in a bathroom.

Charlie: I think it’s a pretty smart decision.

Jamie: Anyway… We should probably go. Damien left like 20 minutes ago and he was acting really
strange. I think he might be annoyed with us or something.

Charlie: I agree. We shouldn’t keep him waiting.

All four make their way out to their cars to drive to Delta’s. In her car, Jamie makes a phone call.

Jamie: Hey, Rick. I just wanted to apologize for yelling at you today. Just wanted to make sure you knew that.

Rick: Jamie, you didn't have to do that. I know you weren’t really calling me a jerk. Also, that’s not a very insulting insult.

Jamie: You never know. You might have woken up on the wrong side of the bed today.

Rick: Well I didn’t. And you would know. You were there.

Jamie: I guess that’s true. You were in a pretty nice mood I guess. Anyways, I mainly just called because I wanted to talk. I’m going to Delta’s so I can’t talk long, but I really just had to hear your voice.

Rick: Here’s my voice, listen to it.

Jamie: You jerk!

Rick: My feelings! They’re so hurt!

Jamie: At least you’re a jerk that I love.

Meanwhile, Ariana is hitching a ride with Charlie.

Ariana: So, uh… where should I sit?

Charlie: Wherever you want to.

Ariana: You have binders everywhere. This car’s a mess!

Charlie: Just throw those back.

Ariana throws the binders back and sits down.

Ariana: Ouch! What was THAT?

Charlie: You probably sat on a tack.

Ariana: Why would you have a tack in your car? And on your front seat?

Charlie: I’m a professor! I need them to hang my inspirational cat posters!

Ariana: Do you teach first grade?

Charlie: They don’t have first grade professors, Ariana! I’m a college professor. We’ve gone over this.

Ariana: Oh, must have not cared. Anyway, I’m just gonna get a ride with Jamie. She has seat warmers anyway!

Charlie: Bye! See you in a half hour!

Ariana: Bye and thanks anyway, I guess.

Ariana runs to Jamie’s car just in time.

Jamie: AHH!! Ariana!

Ariana (yelling): Can I come in?

Jamie: Umm, sure.

Ariana: Thanks!

Jamie (on the phone) I gotta go. Bye!

Rick: Love you, bye. And be safe with Ariana, she’s crazy!

Ariana: So… Who were you talking to?

Jamie: Just a friend. We’re meeting for some drinks tomorrow.

Ariana: Tomorrow? On a Thursday? That’s TGIT!

Jamie: Yeah. He…

Ariana: He? Oooh, I think my girl Jamie is getting some action!!!

Jamie: Ariana! A lady never tells!

Ariana: So it IS true!

Jamie: Maybe…

Ariana: Who is it?

Jamie: You wouldn’t know him. He works with me.

Ariana: Oh. Well, I wanna meet him!

Jamie: It’s not even serious. i don’t want to get anyone else involved!

Ariana: Well alright… If you insist. So, completely unrelated question here, where are you going for
drinks?

Jamie: Come on!

At Delta’s, Damien is waiting for the others to arrive. He knocks on the door for his mother to answer.

Damien: Mom! Open up! Come on!

There is no answer.

Damien: Oh, my life is just going great today! First my financial situation falls apart and now I get to sit in the Chicago suburbs on a below freezing day because my friends are slowpokes!

Just then, Delta arrives.

Delta: I’m here. And why are you in such a bad mood?

Damien: It’s 15 degrees!

Delta: Calm down. You’re not a grandmother of three named Barb! You’re gonna be alright.

Damien: Okay. No need to be so mean!

Delta: You're so sensitive today. There’s something going on.

Damien: Nothing is going on.

Delta: You can tell me. I’m your big sister.

Damien: Yeah, by ten minutes.

Delta: I’m still older! Now let’s go inside before you freeze, grandma!

Jamie and Ariana arrive next.

Ariana: Alright, give me a name and I’ll look him up on Facebook.

Jamie: Fine. It’s George.

Ariana: George what?

Jamie: George Glass!

Ariana: George Glass? Sure Jan.

Jamie: Well come on! I’m clearly not telling you. Take a hint!

Ariana: Fine. But I’ve got private eyes, and they’re watching you.

Jamie: Let me guess. They see my every move?

Ariana: You got it!

Charlie arrives just as the ladies are walking in.

Charlie: Wait for me!

They all rush downstairs and begin their daily discussion, in private this time.
